RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC (Now on Pac-12 Network)) - martyup - 02-02-2024

Halftime and it's tied at 31.  This is a brawl.  Juju has 25 points and is making everything she throws up, unless Cam blocks it.  Cam has 6 blocks, 10 rebounds, and 5 points.  She has no fouls, so a triple-double with blocks is very possible.

We have to figure out a way to slow down Juju.  She is going to score, but she cannot beat us herself (right?)

SC has some serious foul trouble.  Marshall and Davis both have 3 fouls.  Juju has 2 and should have more with her flops.

Watkins is really good. Cam is short on all her shots. Bosgana best game in a while. Jump has her shot so far. Refs aren't letting anybody flop.

Some of us are old enough to remember MWB v Wake Forest and Tim Duncan. Stanford won by swarming Duncan, daring others to score. Perhaps a tip for the second half.

Double or triple team Watkins. Leave Cam and Jump under the boards.

Stanford slowed Watkins a little when Bosgana started defending her. Ogden's presence will also be important because I think she is next in line to cover Watkins. Watkins is so savvy she knows she can get off any shot she wants with a smaller defender like Lepolo.

Read Brinks lips talking to the trainer at a timeout. “I’m so tired tonight and I have no idea why.”

Hope she can find her 2nd wind and someone for the love of god guard JuJu with a little more tenacity and intensity.

Brink does seem a little off. Just a tiny bit slow and unsteady compared to normal.

Lepolo guarding Juju does seem like a mismatch. That said, Juju is just tremendously good. Smooth, agile, and such a natural shooter. Watching her up close and in person is really fun even if I'm rooting so hard for her to miss (and/or foul). If we'd nabbed either her or Hidalgo, a fourth championship would feel really plausible.

7 blocks for Brink

Imagine if we had Watkins in Cardinal Red; Brink and Iriafen would have field days in the paint with all of the defensive attention paid on her.

Agreed. We are already 19-2 without either of them; I would argue those two losses could have been wins if we had either one of them.

Embarrassing
Juju 37
Stanford 35

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC (Now on Pac-12 Network)) - TheFarm07 - 02-02-2024

What's the most a single opposing player has scored against us? Watkins with 37 midway through the 3rd quarter.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC (Now on Pac-12 Network)) - Card10Fan - 02-02-2024

Can we not deny her getting the ball? Like how long does it take to adjust how we’re guarding her? Ridiculous.

Unfortunately, WBB taking a page outta Haase’s generosity book
That is, to let the other team have a career night for somebody

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC (Now on Pac-12 Network)) - cardtreefan22 - 02-02-2024

feels like a lot of the possessions, our guards aren't even looking to be aggressive to get to the basket.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC (Now on Pac-12 Network)) - martyup - 02-02-2024

One down.  Marshall fouls out in the 3rd Q.

Gut check for our team.  Going into the 4th Q down 10 points.  Can we crawl back and take this?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC (Now on Pac-12 Network)) - Card10Fan - 02-02-2024

Offensive is killing us too. No aggressive get to the basket plays. A lot of standing and looking for Cam, Kiki, or Hannah for a bailout. Plus how many wide open shots have Kiki and Cam missed. Not a single jumper has gone in for them. Kiki is having a very rough night. Every one is but she’s really struggling.

terrible 3rd quarter, 11-21

As I posted several months ago, we are slow, the guards can't handle anyone with serious quicks, and the backups are weak. JuJu with 40 points after 3? Calling Stanford D, you are missing in action. Also, our bigs are being held to a pittance (6 for 25 so far.).  Not a good look. If we don't come on strong in Q4, it will be a major loss and knock us down in the rankings, perhaps out of the top 10. Let's make a major push to get back in this game.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC (Now on Pac-12 Network)) - martyup - 02-02-2024

3 of SC's bigs have fouled out.  We have 4 minutes to overcome a 6 point deficit.  We can do this.

Agreed.

Stanford doesn't have a defensive-stopper guard. Watkins continues to do what she wants.

Down to 2, 58-56!

Turnovers killing Stanford.

Lepolo on Watkins doesn't come close to working.

Game, set, match.

This loss is more about our lack of offense than defense.  We should be able to beat any team that we hold to under 70.  We just couldn't get our offense going tonight.
