10. More money. He makes $948k, he's not even WCC average...seriously, the average is over $1.4 million. My guess is Haase makes 2x more than that.
He's 61 years old, and maybe he's comfy where he is. He's in decent shape and can probably coach another ten years. Why not at Stanford?
For number 7, Duke, Northwestern, and Vandy are similar.
I think the point was, "the single most prestigious..." Sure, the others are "similar," by the broad definition of the word, but they are not the same. Neither academically nor athletically. (I can be objective on this point, having attended none of them.)
In addition, only the Vandy job is available now or anytime soon, so the point is mostly moot.
More referring to the later part - "certainly the only one that mixes top level academics with athletics". If anything, I'd argue Duke and Northwestern have done a better part mixing when it comes to basketball in particular.

I think we'd make a killer backcourt and a good NIL deal might be better than my annual salary with bonuses. I mean I'm in my seventh decade now and have lost track of pieces of flesh and other body parts that get pulled whenever I say "sure" when some young people ask if I want to join them at the gym, but in the early '80s they called me the Jamaal Wilkes of the 5'-11" and under league. I could actually dunk at 5'-10" when I wasn't lugging these extra 70 pounds around. Almost without traveling!
Back on point, I don't fault Muir for when he announced Haase's departure. Times have changed. Montgomery got Lichti, Wright, and other talent when he came on board, but these days plan on total do-overs. Also, it's never just the coaching. For whatever reason the players looking to portal on out of here contributed to sub .500 basketball. We can lose more than we win without them, too.
Also, Moraga ain't a bad place to live. A coach would be an idiot to move from there to Palo Alto. Maybe we're looking for an idiot?

Free / subsidized housing in Palo Alto isn't a bad deal. The biggest draws would be salary, benefits to coaches kids getting in potentially, and higher level competition.

I think we have little chance of getting a proven D1 coach. The Stanford challenge just won't be worth the money we are likely to pay. I think we are looking at possibly someone from a mid major, or D2 where the raise would be worth the headaches.

9 time MIAA Coach of the Year (2012, 2015, 2016, 2017,2019. 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024)

I agree. Even the best of them, arguably Mitch Henderson, who assisted Bill Carmody at Northwestern for 11 years, is both unlikely to leave a cushy gig and not prepared to compete at an ACC level. Henderson was a four-year starter at Princeton, he lives in Princeton, has a wife and three kids. He isn't going anywhere.
Henderson played professionally in Europe and left Euroball to coach with Carmody at NW where he would frequently participate in the practices. Carmody joked in a
Sports Illustrated article: "I don't mind that Mitch is cagier and smarter than all those guys on the court. The thing that bothers me is that he's faster than all of them."
Anyway, he got Princeton to the Sweet 16 two years ago. Probably not the right guy for Stanford.

For a brief moment, watching Raynaud's really high quality highlights reel, I was beginning to wonder if canning Haase and sending everyone good on our team into the portal was the right call... then I remembered that even with multiple players of Raynaud's caliber, we still couldn't eke out a winning record on the season, let alone in the conference, which only reinforces that Haase had to go. Shame we're going to lose all our players with him, but there was just no path forward that was viable at this point...
RE: The exodus begins -
Goose - 03-19-2024
IMO most of these players would probably have left anyway. Haase being let go makes it easier to justify, but in reality all these players had to know that next year would at best be like this year. Going elsewhere makes all the sense in the world if you intend to make a career in basketball. Obviously none of these players were at Stanford to get an education. If they were, Haase or no Haase, they could have remained and got said education. They are leaving, which should disabuse anybody who still believed the quaint notion notion these players are "student athletes".

Reynaud and all the others have every right to transfer, but if this is what it means to have a DI basketball team in the portal/NIL era, then what the hell are we doing. Of all the players that Haase has recruited and signed, how many of them will wind up having graduated from Stanford? Is it even half? How many football players recruited in Shaw's last five years graduated from Stanford? Even the women's basketball team has had a rather large share of recent recruits going to other schools, including three last year alone.x
This is not a system that Stanford should be a part of. It's not good for the school, it's not good for the scholar athletes, and as a fan, I've never been less interested in Stanford sports, and for that matter the University itself (though I won't be able to help myself in rooting for the women's basketball team in the next few weeks).
If it weren't for loss aversion and the fact that a lot of people depend on Stanford athletics, there is no way that we would establish an athletics program under these circumstances. We keep engaging in this madness because we always have, but it is largely time to get off this train. Collegiate athletics will fall under the weight of its own internal contradictions. It's sad, but this is why we can't have nice things.

With NIL these days, they can make far more potentially elsewhere than they could here. And it would trump any 40 year stanford dege decision with compounding interest.

Wow...we went 0 for 3 in retaining the key players for next year. If anybody stayed, I thought it would be monsieur.
He seemed to want to go to Stanford regardless of the coach from the family videos I saw where his mère speaks about him.
Won't doubt that the incoming freshman also decides to switch.
Benny will be our top returning player.

Unless the new MBB coach brings in a bunch of transfers (which would require the coach to have excellent blackmail on admissions officials), we're looking at a ceiling of probably under 10 wins next year. This is going be the worst MBB team in decades.
They'd better hire an amazing coach to make this coaching change worthwhile, because the transition period is going to be painful.

So why would any "amazing" coach want to get involved in this mess? Maybe only if he is amazingly stupid. We aren't going to drive a Brinks truck up and pay him multiple millions to take the job. Only way we can offer any real money considering the probable revenue stream would be if some alumni endows the job with big bucks. Many coaches are willing to take on a challenge, but they need to find a new word to describe our situation.
To field a team next year that could win more than 5 games will take some amazing portal luck. If Benny is our best player next year, we might not win any.
