Solid game. A few scoring droughts weren’t ideal. Rebounding felt bad at times, but the overall numbers are fine to good - +2 for Stanford. All right now.

If the seeds hold Stanford will play former player Isa Silva and USF Dons.

LSJU attempted 31 three point shots, the most since last November.
Benny tied his career high with 9 attempted threes! Green light Benny.
And Cammann filling the stat sheet, with 7 pts 8 reb (season high) 1 ast 1 stl 2 blk!

Forgot he was there. Has not played a single second this season.

Thrilled for our players to get this postseason tournament win.
Such a long time coming.
A testament to their perseverance and determination.
Also a credit to Coach who has done what he said he was going to do in pre-season, emphasize strong defense, ball possession, and shared full team unselfish play.
As/TO of 17/8 is good indication of that.
Magnificent Maxime has blossomed under this strategy.
Like in any tournament, once you get the first win, there is nothing you want more than to get the 2nd!

Unfortunately, I can't.

Same here. I watched about five minutes of the game. I'm happy for Raynaud and Blakes to have this last hurrah, but, truth be told, if the seniors had bypassed these NIT games I would for sure be tuning in to get a glimpse of what next year's squad might look like.

Far better than not playing. Nice for the team who became a pretty decent team after being picked for awful status. Anything positive may make somebody thinking transferring, do it.

A good win for the Cardinal even though CSUN played without their top scorer Adams who was also a 1st team All Big West member. He was out with an injury.
I was able to watch the last 12 minutes or so. Stanford played a lot of zone defense. CSUN ended up beating it pretty regularly to get good shots. They just didn't make too many of them. I wonder why Coach Smith opted for so much zone over man-to-man.
The announcers really like Stanford. Each of them picked Stanford to make the final 4 in NYC.

ESPN has the second round game set for Sunday, time TBD.
The final four is in Indianapolis, not NYC.

Attended the game, a very poor turnout. All the upper seats were blocked off because of the low attendance. I had never seen that for a basketball game at Maples.
The good thing about that is I got to sit 3 rows back of the scorer's table. I was actually able to hear the coaches talk with each other.
It was an enjoyable game, one where we never trailed.
CKS has shortened the bench to 3 players...Camman, Okpara, and Benny. I'm concerned about transfers out due to lack of playing time.

I think every college sports fan should expect their team to lose (at least) one good player every year, no matter what.
Last season, Boston College finished 20-16, including a win in the NIT. But they had five or six players transfer out. While they did bring in four incoming transfers, they only managed 12 wins this season.
Transfer season can really kill a program's momentum. We'll see what happens with Stanford.

I was really excited about it. Certainly better than a loss. My two favorite teams won NIT first round games. SCU squeaked by UC Riverside, 101-62. They are on opposite sides of the bracket, so a mere three more wins each and they will face each other in the NIT championship game.
It could happen...

That's a very loud squeak... more of a deafening roar.
I'd love to see an all-NoCal final. Let the east coast media suck on that awhile.
But first we have to prepare for Kent St.
I'm sure Coach knows well that you overlook or take lightly any team in this tournament at great peril.

IMHO there aren't any bench guys beyond the three who play in the rotation who aren't replaceable. Sure, any one of the guys stuck on the bench could develop into a nice rotation piece or even a starter. However, if we are able to keep the six returning rotation pieces and keep most of the other guys, I'll feel very good.

USF beat Utah Valley, 79-70 -- so they're still on a collision course with Stanford, assuming Stanford beats Kent State and USF beats Loyola Chicago (wonder how many times Jesuit schools have met in post-season play?).

Rules question: At Wednesday's game, the opening tip was won by Max who tapped it to our basket. It bounced to the endline where it went out of bounds after players from each team seemed to have touched it.
The ball was awarded to CSUN at the 19:56 mark. The shot clock was set at 20 seconds and am wondering why that was. I thought they would get the full 30 seconds since no team possessed the ball. At worst, they should have gotten 26 seconds since only 4 seconds had elapsed in the game.
Anyone know what the rule is in this instance to set the play clock to 20?

Stanford takes on the Golden Flashes from Kent State tonight at Maples - at 6:00 on ESPN2. Stanford favored by 6.5, O/U is 141.5, implied score is 74-67.5. Kent has a record of 23-11, 9-5 on the road. They finished 3rd in the Mid-American Conference and lost in the semi-finals of the MAC tourney. In league play, Kent went 0-2 vs. Akron (a 13 seed in the NCAA tourney), and 0-3 (the 3rd loss coming in the MAC tourney) vs. Miami (of Ohio). In their non-leagues games, losses included Alabama, Auburn, & UC Irvine. Kent's best win was the 1st round NIT victory at St. Bonaventure. Net rankings are 81 for Stanford and 128 for the Flashes.
In the other San Francisco region game, Loyola Chicago is at USF at 4:00 - also on ESPN2. the winners of these 2 games will play in the regional final on Tuesday or Wednesday night.
A look at the MAC team stats would indicate that Kent's success depends on defense. They led the league in scoring defense (68.0ppg). This might be partially due to pace of play, but they also led the league in opponent's FG% (41.8) and were 2nd in opponent's 3pt FG% (31.5). They were also 3rd in rebounds (37.1), 1st in rebounding margin (+5.1), and 3rd in steals (7.6).
Probable starters for the Golden Flashes are:
#13 Jalen Sullinger (5'10/167 Sr G) a 2-year starter, he was the MAC 6th man of the Year as a soph and 3rd-team All-MAC as a jr. Leads Kent with 15.3ppg and 79 3s (37.4%);
#1 Von Cameron Davis (6'5/229 RSr F) another 2-year starter, scoring 14.6ppg;
#23 Delrecco Gillespie (6'8/216 Jr F) Leading rebounder (7.8), scores 8.0ppg on 58.8%FG shooting;
#11 Cian Medley (5'11/165 So G) transfer from St. Louis, assist leader (4.1), 7.4ppg;
#15 Mike Bakelja (6'0/184 Gr G) transfer from Duquesne, 2-year starter.
Rounding out Kent's 8-man rotation are:
#2 Marquis Bennett (6'4/195 Sr G) transfer from Presbyterian, where he was All-big South as a jr., 8.6ppg;
#42 Cli'Ron Hornbeak (6'9/238 Sr C) 7.7ppg (on 64.1%FG shooting), 6.1 rpg, picks up almost 3 fouls/game in an average of about 20 minutes of action;
#4 Jamal Sumlin (6'3/180 RSo G) transfer from NW Florida St. College, where he was Panhandle Conference Co-PoY, 5.7ppg.
Against St. Bonaventure, Kent scored 21 points on fast breaks. Both Gillespie & Hornbeak had double-doubles. Hornbeak also had 4 fouls and 4 turnovers in just 17 minutes. As with the CSUN game, this seems like a game Stanford should win - especially if they can limit the Flashes fast break opportunities and if they can use their size advantage to limit Gillespie & Hornbeak (and maybe get Hornbeak into foul trouble). And like the CSUN game, I expect that I, SkiBum, & many other seasoned Stanford fans will be excited, but nervous.

This is likely to be a very difficult game for the Card. Kent St. is really physical and hits the glass hard. We won't win the rebounding battle, but we need to keep it close. VonCameron Davis plays bullyball and we have to make him move. Sullinger is a scorer - hits all sorts of shots from deep 3's to runners to leaners and he gets to the line a lot. He's capable of dropping 30 on our guards. Should be a fun one!
