Casual Stanford WBB fan here, but firmly a fan of modern-day college sports.
It won't be the scoreboard or standings that determine Paye's hot-seat status, but whether or not the talented frosh opt to stay or leave. Hopefully, they enjoy "playing school."
We shall see.

How has Swain's demeanor and body language been in the past few home games? She played well at BC and Pitt but otherwise hasn't been stellar in ACC games.
She's shooting 38 % overall and 12 of 52 (22 %) on threes. 34 assists, 57 turnovers.

Agree - retention of this year's class will be the first indicator for the "KP Watch", closely followed by regaining a semblance of recruiting mojo, the latter of which needs to happen subito. Oh - and winning would help too.....

I agree that retention will be a key to KP's stay hotness. I have a sense that Swain may bolt. NuNu may also want a taste of the big dance in her last year.
I would have thought KP would go a little deeper on the bench tonight, but she preferred to stick with the trusted 7 (6 with Alex Injured). That doesn't give the bench player any confidence.

If any of the freshman leave, my feeling is also it will be Swain. I don’t see Somfai leaving. While it’s great to come in and play 30-40 minutes a game as a freshman, players come to Stanford expecting to win and be in the NCAA tourney. That isn’t happening.

I think Somfai may go. she came from overseas to go to IMG so she has high expectations
press conferences all sound the same now

DIdn’t we spend the first half of the season arguing about how Eschmeyer was going to leave due to lack of playing time?
In today’s game, any player can leave any year for any reason. I don’t think any of us have any insight into what the specific players are thinking and what they are looking for in a basketball and school (and those who do, know in confidence, and hopefully wouldn’t betray that confidence in a public forum). I think in the wake of a disappointing season it is fair to say that players might be at an increased risk of transfer, but speculating on individual players is silly.

Wouldn't surprise me. The 3 frosh could go most anywhere they want, which includes other high-academic programs. I agree that they want to win, and thats a big factor at their level. They have to be frustrated with how the season has progressed and they likely are questioning KP and the coaching staff. Hopefully they all love their teammates and Stanford and that's enough for them to stay.
One thing about Haase - he had personality and could recruit, and he was likeable. I question how KP is in that area. imo, she's pretty bland in her press conferences.

With little depth and it looks like moderate new incoming talent from the next recruiting class, even 1 or 2 transfers will be disastrous.

disappointing not to bring in a top transfer.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your argument, but isn't the WBB/MBB transfer portal open in April right after the NCAA finals? I presume that Tempie Brown is going to hit that market with her best efforts, so why not wait to pass judgment until the portal closes?
It seems to me that GM Brown is almost as critical to next season's success as Coach Paye.

Lighten up, Francis. This is a discussion board and you’re being way too rational.
We’re all fans and we all have different triggers. With all due respect, BC, sometimes I think you’re too focused on your own. Take a deep breath and enjoy the flow.

Based on how this season is going, Brown doesn't have much to go on, in terms of enticing players to Stanford, especially if we miss the tournament again and end the year on a multi-game losing streak
I would consider it a win if none of the freshmen leave but in this day & age, I would not be surprised if at least one of them looks elsewhere, given the declining state of the program and the NIL money other schools can offer. One of the historic advantages we have - a top tier program is no longer there and currently looks to be a long shot to getting it back. It would be catastrophic if we had a mass exodus (a la Oregon and Oregon St. in the last few seasons)
Maybe I'll be wrong and Kate's strength is talent retention and she can convince the players that next year will be better but with next year's very lackluster recruiting class, reinforcements are not on the horizon either

"Lackluster recruiting class" is my concern also. We need depth, and that ain't it...at least on paper. Nunu's injury is Exhibit No. 1.

The Law of the Jungle — when the pack isn’t devouring the “other,” they start devouring members of their own pack.
Given the events of the past three seasons, the basketball gods haven’t been good to our team — the Betts et all disaster, the advent of NIL and the portal, Tara’s retirement, the demise of the PAC 12, injuries to our point guard and highest scorer, and god knows what else. When the stars misalign, critics come forward, salivating over their pet gripe, and chaos takes over.
It looks like the good old days are over for now, hopefully not forever. Possible strategies for fan survival are — watching the young ladies and their coaches weather the changes as they make incremental progress, cheering on the current members of the team as members of a supportive fan base, organize a public wake for what used to be, or… (your choice).
I am at a loss for a better solution. I still attend the home games, I leave my expectations at the door (and I admit to some disappointment, but take the long view, when possible, and cheer on our players who dawn the cardinal and white).
Come join me and cheer this team on!

I think it is a fair critique that I can be too deferential to the administration and program (I assume that those are the triggers to which you refer), but wouldn’t the “lighten up” also apply to everyone expressing a collective sense of doom about the Stanford basketball program? Shouldn’t everyone here take a deep breath and try to “enjoy the flow” of a group of young women trying to represent the school and play basketball as best they can? Yes, it is easier to enjoy the flow when you are winning than when you are not, but to me the the collective mood feels overwrought, and message boards being what they are, it is easy for feelings to rapidly snowball and become a pile on.
There is no question that the results this year are disappointing; I don’t dispute that. I also don’t begrudge anyone from voicing their frustration. I just don’t think that uninformed speculation about Swain or Somfai (or earlier in the season Eschmeyer) leaving is very constructive, message board or not. What does it accomplish? Now, if someone were to post that one of the players stopped following Stanford basketball on Instagram, then at least that’s something. Otherwise, I think it is reasonable to acknowledge that in today’s environment we will be at a heightened risk for an outbound transfer given the disappointing season, and, as Hieronymous noted, given the lightly regarded incoming class (and our clearly demonstrated lack of depth) even losing one or two players to the portal would be really bad.
But that’s just me… you (all) do you.

I'm more or less with you, BC. Like I said earlier, we'll have a better idea about next season after the transfer portal closes in April. Men's basketball has been able to bring in some quality transfers and the state of that program is about the same as the women's side, IMO.
