I'm going to guess Owen Wilson, Pirates, the guy who hit 36 triples in one season.

Who has the best record in the National League West division?

For what period of time?

Let's say "Which team is currently in first place in the National League West division?"

Who has the highest ratio of triples to at bats?
Who has the highest ratio of triples to total hits?

(for the two ratios, minimum 3000 at bats)

I'm going to guess that it was one of the stars of the dead ball era, when outfields were immense (and sometimes oddly shaped), the ball wasn't as lively, and home runs were harder to hit. So it could have been Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Honus Wagner, Eddie Collins, Joe Jackson, Nap Lajoie, Ed Delahanty, or someone like that.

Since it was a trivia post, I thought you might have meant since the divisional structure was established in 1969.

Of course, the answer is the same as always, Los Angeles at the top (although they currently find themselves in a tie with SF).

Well, the Giants and Dodgers share first place in the NL West with today’s game between the two set to determine who stands alone for at least the next 24 hours.

Great game last night between the teams’ aces with Webb prevailing 6-2 thanks to his pitching and Casey Schmitt’s first ever grand slam.

Go Gyros!

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Giants - 06-14-2025

Speaking of SF and LA, of all the players who have played for both teams, who has hit the most HRs (must have hit at least one HR for each team)?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 06-14-2025

First one that comes to mind Duke Snider

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 06-14-2025

Yes, Terry, Joe Jackson had the highest proportion of triples as a share of at bats.

You got it, Bob.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Giants - 06-14-2025

From today’s NYT Crossword puzzle….

Oldest sports franchise that has never won a championship in the “Big Four” leagues (MLB, NHL, NBA, NFL)?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Nobadeer - 06-14-2025

Detroit Lions?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 06-14-2025

There have been 106 splash hits in Oracles 25 year history. Barry Bonds has the most, at 35.  Who’s second?  Bonds hit the first one, on May 1, 2000.  In fact, Bonds hit the first nine.  Who hit the tenth.  Bonds is also the only Giant to do it twice in a game, and though it’s not officially a splash hit if it’s hit by a visiting team, one other player has hit two balls I to the Bay; who was it?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 06-14-2025

Wait was it the lions ??

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 06-14-2025

Don’t think it was the Lions, who won a few pre-Super Bowl NfL champions.  I don’t think it is any pre-expansion team in any of the Big Four.

Maybe the Minnesota Vikings?

Maybe the Minnesota Vikings?

Seattle Pilots/Milwaukee Brewers.

Minn won NFL Championship in ‘69. Pre-merger.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Giants - 06-14-2025

No correct answers yet to the “oldest franchise” question.

First clue:  It is an NFL team.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 06-14-2025

Flacons.  Joined the NFL in the mid-sixties, have been to two superbowls, but lost them both.

By the way, the Falcons took over the distinction in 2023, when which team (which had been around longer) won its first championship?

BC

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Giants - 06-14-2025

Correct, BC.  The Falcons started play in 1966.

As for your Q, Texas Rangers (née Washington Senators v.02).  The Sens started play in 1961.  It took a guy like Bruce Bochy to get the job done.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Nobadeer - 06-14-2025

Down 10-0, the SF Giants used backup catcher Logan Porter, called up from AAA earlier this week, as their 8th inning reliever tonight at Dodger Stadium.

How many pitches did he need to retire the side, and what was the average speed of his pitches thrown?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 06-15-2025

Not a sports trivia question, but one I hope people here will appreciate.  Bruce Springsteen never had a Billboard #1 single.  His highest ranked single got to #2.  What song was it, and what blocked him from the #1 spot?
