The Cardinal were joined by UConn, South Carolina and North Carolina State as No. 1 seeds in the tournament that begins Sunday.

An aspect of the bracket that perplexes me -- there are 6 Pac-12 teams and they are in only 3 regions -- 2 in each of Alamo (Stanford and Oregon), Hemisfair (Oregon St and UCLA), Mercado (Washington St and Arizona). That means that NONE are in the River Walk region, where U Conn is the #1 seed. I would have expected that given 6 from the same conference, there would be at least one in every region. Any thoughts, anyone?

IMO sometimes it is too tedious for a selection committee to micromanage brackets for all aspects of every fan's perspective. I don't see anything sinister or bias in the brackets. At some point the committee has to say, ok this is good enough.

Two questions:
7am or 7pm?
are we the #1 seed OVERALL?

The 1st round game against Utah Valley is at 7pm PST on Sunday, March 21st.
And yes, we are the #1 overall seed!

At first glance, UConn's bracket (Mercado) looks pretty tough from top to bottom IMHO:
- #8 Syracuse: they are an experienced team with their front-court Mangakahia & Lewis, and plenty of size with 6-2 Strautmane, 6-2 Williams, and ACC FOY & DPOY 6-7 Cardoso (potentially a game without Geno).
- #6 Michigan: junior Naz Hillmon is a stud, averaging 25 ppg and 11.4 rpg. She was the BigTen POY
- #5 Iowa: Caitlin Clark is leading the nation in scoring at almost 27 ppg. Would love to see her match up with the recently announced ESPN POY Bueckers
- #4 Kentucky: SEC POY 6-2 Rhyne Howard is averaging almost 21 ppg
- #3 Tennessee: dangerous team with elite size to compete with anyone. They already had a close game with UConn and beat SoCarolina this season
- #2 Baylor: Kim Mulkey knows how to win championships and beat UConn. Not as dominant in the post as years past, but they have ultra athletic players in 6-2 N.Smith, 5-11 Carrington, 6-2 Richards
I personally would take multiple Pac 12 teams in my bracket vs UConn's

Brackets seem reasonably balanced overall to me. I have a hard time getting a feel for teams because so few inter-conference games. I think we could have gotten a slightly easier 8/9 in our bracket but it's fine. Of all the 2 seeds, Louisville is ok, not much scarier or less scary than the other 2 seeds. Ark as a 4 seed is not easy but to the good, our coaches know Slocum and have an idea how their coach, who used to coach UW, likes to play. Just win, baby, win!

Two items of note in the NYT article:
- their fact-checking is slipping! Stanford was not based in Las Vegas the entire nine weeks away from Santa Clara Co., and
- Geno tested positive for COVID- how will that affect UConn's prep? (oops, I now see there's a whole thread on this)

I don't know how the selection committee put together the brackets. Is this a possibility because geographic location to reduce travel expenses is not a consideration?
Rank the top 64 teams. Use some variation of a serpentine format to put the teams in the brackets. After reviewing the brackets, switch a team to a different bracket only if there is a blatant conflict of some sort.

Just got home from work to see the reveal.
So...if the seeds all held/almost held, we would play:
64 Utah Valley
32 Oklahoma State
16 Arkansas
8 Louisville/Georgia
4 South Carolina/Maryland
2 UConn/NC State
The best teams we are very likely to dodge are:
Texas A&M
Baylor
Well, if we run the table, we will certainly deserve the championship. It is not an easy path, but I don't think anyone has an easy path this year. I am VERY happy that we won't play Baylor unless they upset UConn AND NC State.

Maryland was a team glad was not in our bracket

I would be glad to see Stanford get another shot at Louisville after the 86-59 beatdown in 2018 in the Sweet Sixteen. Lots of work to get there first.

ESPN presented the bracket as if UConn was the top overall seed. Their region was revealed last, and afterward there was a graphic of the 4 top seeds in a horizontal row with UConn on the far left and Stanford just after, IIRC. I wouldn't mind it being either way, but ESPN really made me think we were #2.

Stanford is still stubbornly at #2 in today's AP poll, way behind UConn at #1. But the fan poll at UConn's board has Stanford #1, UConn #2 despite any homer bias. They are almost too nice!
