The game tonight is going well, with Andrea Kitahata lofting a shot over the outstretched arm of the Santa Clara keeper into the far upper corner of the net for a 1-0 lead after the first half.

And we get a 1-0 victory in a rather interesting game, with lots of movement. WSOC looks good.
Wins for WSOC, WVB, and the 49ers. Not a bad weekend except for one bad loss--the double overtime loss in field hockey.
No one else was playing, were they?

Men's soccer got beat by Oregon State. OSU has had their number for a few years now. Looks like they have a pipeline of recruits from Spain. Oh, and a senior transfer from UW Milwaukee who scored both goals today. Stanford had been #1 until a tie on Thursday against Washington and today's loss. The Washington game was pretty even; today Oregon State looked to be the slightly better team. Both games were unlike all of the previous this year, insofar as Stanford didn't build up with passes from the back. Instead, it was a lot of long balls, often motivated by an element of anxiety about holding onto the ball. The UW game in particular was rather tedious to watch -- like a pinball game much of the time, as Washington employed the same "I-don't-want-to-be-the-guy-who-screws-up" approach.
Anyone else watch?

Men's soccer lost as the top ranked team in the country today to Oregon State. I don't think the FH loss can be considered a bad loss. It's a rebuilding year for FH.

The men’s soccer team has been playing really well util this weekend. Their fantastic midfield play disappeared this weekend. Zach Bohane did not play on Thursday. Played today but not the same Zach Bohane we’ve seen in previous games.

Stanford gets out to a quick 1-0 lead over #24 Washington State. WSU seems to be keeping the ball in front of the Stanford goal more than I would like to see--perhaps more than Santa Clara managed. And WSU has had a few shots, but not very accurate ones. Still, this does not look as lopsided as a Stanford fan would like to see.
The 1-0 lead holds up to the end of the first half. But WSU looks more dangerous than more highly ranked Santa Clara to my untrained eye. They have had more possession and more shots, to be sure, including one on a breakaway 1-on-goalkeeper opportunity that Campbell deflected and then covered up. Stanford does not look dominant.
The 1-0 lead holds up to the end of the game. WSU seemed to me to out-possess us, and out shot us 10-8, although we out shot them with shots on goal 4-2. Mia Bhuta had her first collegiate goal to give us the win.
I'm not sure why, but rather than creating long possessions with lots of short passes and triangles, in this game we attempted many long forward passes that wound up being 50/50 balls at best. It did not seem all that effective to me, and it allowed WSU a lot of opportunities. While many WSU shots were very inaccurate, there were a couple that could easily have been our undoing, but Campbell played them all correctly.

Santa Clara couldn’t hang with Stanford physically. WSU could so yes at least against us, your untrained eye is accurate. Fortunately WSU is a bit limited technically. But their physicality had us playing much more directly especially in the second half. The pressure overwhelmed the skill today. Overall though WSU had some shots, but very little that was dangerous. The team missed Pagador: I hope she isn’t too injured from the SC game. Some of the lineup choices I thought were strange today too. Grillione played a lot and wasn’t good for example.

We take on 6-3-1 ASU in about an hour. 7pm Pac 12 networks. As usual, it seem ambiguous to me
which of the Pac 12 channels it will be on.

The game is underway. Match is billed as a defensive contest. ASU goalie leads the Pac 12, from Germany.
Freshman Erica Grilione taps it into the net for a 1-0 Stanford lead. Only the 4th goal ASU has given up this whole season.
Argh. ASU get the equalizer at 52 minutes. Their offense has been anemic, but they nailed one from point blank range.

Why isn’t Lumi Kostmayer playing?

Aikey gets our second goal after 82 minutes and we pull out a 2-1 win. Grilione assisted--the freshman sure had a good game!
Not sure why Kostmayer did not play.
We out shot ASU 22-5.

Go Card!
I got to see many LJSU W soccer alums play recently in the NWSL. I went to the Angel City v. OL Reign game in LA last month (Ali Riley, Sam Hiatt, Alana Cook; C Press was injured and didn't suit up. Also LSJU recruit Alyssa Thompson) and earlier this month I went to the San Diego Wave v. KC Current game (Girma, Carusa, Sierra Enge, Loeau Labonta; Belle Briede didn't play).
Attendance at Angel City was capacity, 22 K, and for the SD Wave (who play at the SD State Snapdragon stadium), it was 15.7 K.
Girma was actually less decisive and creative at times for the Wave than she was for the USWNT at the World Cup this summer. Enge scored for the Wave. For Angel City, Alyssa Thompson was mostly not in the right place at the right time and got subbed out. Her world class speed is as advertised, easy to see how she was 11.7 for the 100 m at Harvard-Westlake.

Did anyone see Stanford defeat Arizona 3-0? There was lots going on and I missed the game. I see from the boxscore that we had goals from Maryn Doms, Maryn Wolf, and Elise Evans--so nice to hear from freshman Wolf who I believe scored her first college goal.

The 3rd goal (by Evans) was ESPN Top 10 worthy.

#3 Stanford defeated #25 Colorado at Boulder 3-1 tonight. Stanford fell behind in the 14th minute, then caught up and took the lead on goals by Aikey and Jung in the last 5 minutes of the half. Doms added one more in the 62nd minute. Stanford had 10 shots on goal vs. 2 for Colorado.
The Cardinal travel to Salt Lake City for a match vs. Utah on Sunday.

I see we beat Utah on a goal by Kitahata only 10 minutes in. I was watching two other things and did not see the game. But the women keep rolling. 12-0-1 now.

The Cardboard doesn't seem to be following WSOC closely.
Did I miss someone pointing to this article on Andrea Kitahata
She left Stanford soccer to focus on mental health. Now she’s a rising star
