Most shocking stat of the game . . . Brink is 1-3 from the charity stripe.

With 3 minutes to play in the 3rd, we already have scored more points than we did on Friday.

We have a 30 point lead in the 3rd quarter over the #7 ranked team in the Country.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. UCLA Sunday 1pm - BosCard - 02-04-2024

Let’s not start the 4th with the Iriafen, Demetre, Bosgana, Harriel, Clardy lineup that decided not to play defense and let UCLA make a bunch layups.

Although there is still a quarter left to play, I'd like to congratulate the coaches and team for an excellent performance today. Barring a massive collapse in Q4, it's an impressive win given that Friday must have been tough to swallow. It's a testament to the resilience of players and coaches alike. Congratulations all around.

We held UCLA to 29% shooting in the first half.

Our bigs have no fouls.

Big defensive contrast today vs. USC. USC clawed, scratched and bit whatever it took to deny entry into the post. UCLA has mostly allowed us to get the ball to the post at will. That will predictably get you destroyed. I know UCLA is massively short handed, but they haven’t tried very hard on defense in the post.

With just over 5 minutes to play, we are 4-7 from the 3 point line and 4-7 from the free throw line.

Cam with 20 rebounds.

And then she runs the floor.

It's hard for me to figure out Bosgana's playing time.  I would assume a team normally starts its five best players and plays its five best players a good deal of time and finishes with the five best players.  Was Bosgana on the court in the fourth quarter against USC?

Nonetheless a beautiful win against UCLA.  Coach Close seemed subdued when I was watching.  Normally every foul called on her team is a bad call and she lets the refs know about it.

RE: WBB: Stanford 80 -- UCLA 60 - martyup - 02-04-2024

Both Brink and Iriafen played more minutes than Jump.  That has to be a first.

Tonight we got to see what Brink can do when she plays a full game (33 minutes).  19 points, 19 rebounds, and 7 brinks.

Iriafen played 34 minutes and had 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 block.

Lepolo had the highest +/- at 21.  In 36 minutes she scored 5 points, 7 assists, and 3 turnovers.

RE: WBB: Stanford 80 -- UCLA 60 - BosCard - 02-04-2024

Lots of kudos to Brink and Iriafen but this game is a lot closer if our perimeter players don't drive against the tight defense and make somewhat contested layups.  Jump, Bosgana and Agara all drove from the perimeter and made their clutch layups.  And also bonus kudos to Harriel who is becoming Jump-like in her three point shooting.

RE: WBB: Stanford 80 -- UCLA 60 - Hieronymus - 02-04-2024

Shooting differential makes for some funny rebounding stats. We out-rebounded UCLA 43-29, but for once I don’t think was very impressive. It’s mostly a function of UCLA missing 29 more shots. We actually got out rebounded on the offensive glass 12 to 6.  Turnovers were also a problem again, 17-6 the wrong way.  63.5% shooting covers up any flaws today though.

I hope Betts recovers from whatever it is that’s ailing her.

I was looking forward to seeing her match up with Cam and Kiki inside. Now unless we meet in post-season that may just be another point of speculation for the hoops equivalent of the hot stove league.

A win is a win, regardless of the conditions. Stanford has survived its games against USC, UCLA, Utah and Colorado going 2-2. These are the equivalent of Sweet 16 or Elite 8 matchups. Not the best result, but an acceptable one.

Stanford would seem to be in a 2 way race with Colorado for the top seed in the conference tournament with 7 games remaining. Stanford and Colorado are 9-2. Colorado owns the tiebreaker over Stanford as a result of their win in Boulder. Oregon State also could be a factor. They are 6-3 with games remaining against Colorado, Utah, USC, UCLA and Stanford.

Stanford's remaining 7 conference games are at home vs. Cal, Arizona and ASU and on the road at Washington, WSU, Oregon and Oregon State.

RE: WBB: Stanford 80 -- UCLA 60 - 81alum - 02-04-2024

Well, that was a lot more fun than Friday, for Stanford fans.

1) The chalk talk and the behind-the-bench both noted that the emphasis was on improving our offense.  Tara actually said at the behind the bench that our offense on Friday was "horrible, just horrible" and that the team worked very hard with only a day of practice to improve.  We are an "inside out" team this year, meaning the ball needs to go inside every possession and then only come out if the other team is doubling in the paint.

2) Bird talked a little about Friday's game and responded to questions about why Lepolo was on Watkins.  She pointed out everyone else who was also on Watkins.  Watkins got very few layups on Friday, and in previous games she had not been so accurate with her jump shot.  But Bird said if we play them again we will try something else.  Letting her get comfortable with her jump shot early just served to get her in the zone.  (My analysis: scouting report defense actually backfired on Friday.)

3) Our shooting percentage for the game was 63.5%, the highest since 2014.  After Friday, Tara was adamant that our team needed "better shot selection."  She got it.

4) UCLA's shooting percentage was 32%.  Osborne was 5/18, Rice was 3/13, and Jones was 2/6.  Lepolo did a superb job on Osborne, who was 5/18 and held to 13 after her 30+ point outburst on Friday.  Amazing how good a defender she is when facing someone who doesn't have a 7" height advantage on her.

5) The conundrum about the wing position continues.  Bosgana started and went 3/3.  Pretty good, eh?  Agara sometimes plays 4 and sometimes 3.  She came in and went 4/4.

6) Harriel continues to impress.  2/2 from three point range in 7 minutes.  I like her right now, but have to believe she gets oodles more time after Jump graduates.  She is up to 49% three point shooting now, and it seems consistent from game to game.

7) Rebounding is deceptive.  UCLA got 13 O-boards out of 50 misses, or 26% of their misses.  We got 6 O-boards out of 22 misses, or about 27% of our misses.  Still, with our inside advantage we might think that we should have gotten some of those 13.

8) 17 turnovers was not a terrific stat, but a lot were trying to get the ball inside rather than settling for outside shots.  Entrance passes are difficult when the other team knows you are playing inside-out.  Lepolo still had 7 assists to 3 turnovers, which seems acceptable to me, but we could be better.

9) Bottom line, we got a lot better on offense and also tuned up our defense, creating a gargantuan disparity on accuracy between us and them.  The officiating may have been a factor, too, letting us get into the flow of our offense.

What a great game. Happy for the team and coaches and fans.

Close trying to get Stanford to schedule a non conference home and home series with them starting next year. They would not be a team I would prioritize putting on the non-conference schedule. Will see if it happens.

Agree.  We probably want to do some sort of game in So Cal for recruiting, but I wouldn’t want to play either of the schools that blew up the PAC-12.

The response to the excuse “but we didn’t have Betts, we had to play with whom we had” is “we didn’t have Betts either, we had to play with whom we had!”

Not to tempt the woofing gods at all, but those schedules certainly look favorable for Stanford to perhaps pick up a game on Colorado.

Ditto. There are plenty of D1 schools in So Cal. It'd be fun to play some other schools!
