In the 2nd half, a combined 10 minutes of game time from just two players, Gealer and Cammann. Not sustainable over multiple games.

OTOH, with Agarwal's improved play and Young's emergence--tho he was hobbling today at one point--the team's starting five *may* be set for the rest of the year. We shall see.
I truly wish we could bring Blakes back for one more year!  Some of our guys who left may be starting to wish they had stayed.  The way we have been playing good teams pretty tough on the road, I kept hoping Smith would get over the top and win one, and such a one to win. Our recruits have to be impressed with how Smith's teams play and with a good NIL package good things can happen.  Unlike football, Stanford Basketball can be viewed as a step up by future guys like Blakes and Sellers.  20 wins no longer seems impossible.  A good series of home games coming up and we have to take care of business.  Hopefully this game might end up with us having a good and noisy crowd down the road. I am looking forward to the final stats.  Obviously Blakes had a stellar game and we shot lights out at the FT line.
On another tangent, UNC has always had a special place in my mind.  My great greatgrandfather was a Freshman at UNC when the Civil War broke out, his entire class joined the Confederate Army.  Many years later UNC awarded all surviving members of that class an honorary degree.

Shades of Mike Montgomery, and a hallmark of effective coaching.

Great Point!  If you want to watch a well coached team Smith is giving us an opportunity.  The AD needs to be thinking a big raise might be appropriate come end of season.

I have a lot of respect and admiration for Kyle Smith and the job he has done so far. Strongly support a substantial pay increase for him. Kyle is a class act in every way and a great representative of our university. After the Haase fiasco, I must also give credit to Bernard Muir for making an excellent hire in Kyle Smith.

This is what I really, really enjoy about the ACC affiliation. This was the most fun game to watch in years.

Same here, Mick. Heck of a lot of fun. Love Kevin Smith, though he often looks like he has dyspepsia. Hope he enjoys it as much as we do..

Kevin Smith is ok. His Clerks movies are so so.

OTOH, Kyle Smith is a terrific coach and am glad he's our coach. :^)

Had a chance to witness this one live, a memorable one for sure.
Carolina threatened to make a run multiple times but we always fought back. Tough to do with a loud invested crowd that kept expecting those daggers to come.
Maxime had a monster first half and we somehow held  through his dry offensive spell in the second, mainly through tough gritty defense.
Still smiling
Love watching this team play

RE: MBB: @ UNC, Saturday, 11:15am on CW - needle - 01-18-2025

Santa Clara, prior to today probably Stanford's best win, goes on the road and knocks off AP No. 16 Gonzaga behind some OK-I-guess three-point shooting. The Broncos merely shot 12-17 (71%) from three-point range in the second half, winning the game 103-99.

RE: MBB: @ UNC, Saturday, 11:15am on CW - Card10Fan - 01-18-2025

What will it take the rest of the way for Stanford to play themselves into NCAA tourney position? Realistically, how many wins and upsets will we need to get to the bubble.

RE: MBB: @ UNC, Saturday, 11:15am on CW - PVTree - 01-19-2025

My take on what it would take for Stanford to be on the bubble:

At least 20 wins. An above .500 conference record. Reach the ACC tournament semis.

We have 8 home games left including WF and SMU.
Road games are: SMU, GT, Duke, ND, Louisville

So 13 more league games and we need to win 8 to get to 20.  SMU, Wake, Duke and Louisville are all ahead of us.  That means 5 more games against teams above us in the standings. If we can take care of business against those below us and steal a couple of more, we might make it with 22 winds and winning at least one round in the tournament.  We do get WF and SMU at home, need a fired up crowd for those games as they will mean a lot. We have shown to be able to play tough on the road, but we are NOT very deep.  We really need some big wins at home where we can rest more of the starters. I hope Young is taking up residence in the trainers area. For the first time in a long time, you can actually think about winning 20 games when you aren't halfway through your 4th Margarita.

WOW, now 12-6
13 games remaining, and we can win 7-8 of those after this performance @UNC.  Tough road win.
Plus a game or two in ACC Tourney.
That could put us at 20 wins.  20-12 or 13 would get us an NIT bid.  That's how Montgomery started putting it together back in 1989.  Bravo.

One of my two favorite games this week... ;). Santa Clara is a decent team, they're holding onto a #42 RPI (Gonzaga is #40). First win in Gonzaga since 2007 and first road win over a top 25 team since Nash's team beat Cal.

ACC had five teams in March Madness last year:

UNC (29-8)
Duke (27-9
NC State (26-15)
Clemson (24-12)
Virginia (23-11)

ACC had two teams in the NIT
Wake Forest (20-13)
VA Tech (18-14)
Pittsburgh (22-11) turned down a bid.

I think 20 wins gets us in the NIT.

Here's the College RPI for ACC teams:

7 Duke 16-2
13 Louisville 14-5
23 Clemson 15-4
24 N Carolina 12-7
36 Pittsburgh 12-6
49 Wake Forest 14-4
51 Southern Methodist 14-4
53 Florida St 13-5
56 Stanford 12-6
130 Virginia 8-10
140 Syracuse 9-9
167 California 9-9
181 Notre Dame 8-10
209 VA Tech 8-10
220 NC State 9-9
239 GA Tech 8-11
271 Miami 4-14
224 Boston College 9-9

Big dropoff from Stanford to Virginia. I think we could get to the NIT, with an outside shot at the NCAAs (won't tempt the woofing gods).

A problem with the current records and current RPI or Net is that they are the result of who you have played, and don't take into account who you will play.  Warren Nolan's projected RPI has Stanford at #72 with a record of 20-11.  So, they're going to  have to pull some good upsets to make the big dance.  1 down, 2 to go.

I went to all the games in the Jerry Hobbie (aka Apple) tournament. I recall that we kept the game vs. NoCar close enough that Dean Smith had to deploy the four corners offense to hold us back and secure the win.

In the kenpom rankings, UNC dropped to #32 and Stanford rose to #86.  Oof, an uphill battle.

We need to show the UNC upset was not an aberration. First thing is to take care of business at home, we have five of the next six at Maples. It would be great to get momentum heading into February and a brobdingnagian game at Duke (not expecting us to win, but if we can keep it competitive, that would do a whole world of good)
