Sherman's "rant" and calling out his opponent reminded me very much of Ali in his prime, as did the national response.  I had no problem with it (the rant, I had a problem with a lot of the responses).  I am fine with Andrew being Andrew and Richard being Richard.  I DID lose a lot of respect for Dave Lombardi after his long series of tweets aggressively attacking Sherman and tweeting several times that Sherman's behavior is caused by PED use.

Exactly this. Sherman uses ALi as a model for his public persona. Lombardi also lost many points with me as well.
Well Sherman did test positive.  But there were collection problems, so instead of six Seahawks testing positive since 2011, only five tested positive.  Sherman's first PED positive test was thrown out due to collection problems, much like Ryan Braun's... :P

Beverly Sherman has rocketed past Lisa Ertz ("If you get into Stanford, you're going to Stanford. There will be no more discussion.") to be my #4 favorite Stanford mom.  After #1 my mother, #2 Jane Stanford, and #3 Lisa McCaffrey.

Damn good post, washingtonmoney, one of many from you.  You're good.

Inarticulate my ass.  He speaks precisely and without hesitation in battle's heat.  His interviews after were terrific; no one equaled him.

Sorry, but has anyone here ever--ever--heard someone dismiss a white player's interview as "inarticulate"?

Here is horsecrap public speaking.  "We took it to a new level...we have to take it one game at a time. . We brought our A game. . .we knew we had to play 60 minutes and we did. . .it's a team game. . .it's a game of inches. . .it was a team effort. . .we just wanted it a little more. .. he really gave 110 percent. . .we need to take better care of the ball. . .I'd like to have that one back. . ."

Now ask: Anyone here ever hear Richard Sherman utter one of those banalities?  Is there a fresher, more candid, more illuminating, more watchable, more thoughtful speaker in sports right now?

It's also interesting how split Twitterverse is on Sherman. Half of Twitter is eating it up and loving Sherman - the other half is calling him classless.

Quote:Is Sherman the best cornerback in the league?

“Uh, no, I don’t think so,” 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree said on Thursday.

Doesn't matter what he was responding too.  Rise above the fray and be the better man.  I don't have much of a problem with getting in Crabtree's grill after the play.  That's a semi-private thing, but the choke sign and then the post-game interview with Erin Andrews were when he needed to show how to win with class and did the exact opposite.

This is all part of the Shermanator's plan for a career after he hangs up the cleets - in the studio or the booth.  The public just has to care about what he has to say.  Liking him is a bonus.

Re: Richard Sherman = classless - CornFed - 01-20-2014

Several points:
1.  This discussion thread has strongly reinforced my enthusiasm for The CardBoard.  Over the course of the exchange I have gained significant additional perspectives that have helped me to understand and reflect on my own personal reactions to The Rant.  Some have caused chagrin, some have stirred my original emotions, some help me expand my familiarity w/ RS and provided better context and others have helped me see the humor/pathos more clearly.
2.  I spent the day in a retail environment in the SF Bay Area.  Around 150 people interacted with me and I was wearing a Stanford sweatshirt.  If anyone on the Board thinks that The Rant did not affect/damage people's impressions of Stanford, I would say my experience today suggests they are wrong.  That is not to say that in other geographic areas and different demographic mixes, one might not get a completely opposite impression.  Nearly all of the interaction that I had today was good-natured, but I suspect that my relationship with these people may have tempered their message, since they know how much I love Stanford.  That notwithstanding, I think it ill-advised to shrug this off as being "much ado about nothing".  Indeed, the episode will recede to the point where only those with remarkable memories will recall any details.  But how many of these "impressions" are OK?  Are we really indifferent if the tone of The Rant becomes a significant element of the image that comes to mind when people in "Flyover" country think of Stanford?  Maybe so.

3.  While my reaction to The Rant has evolved over the course of the day, I am not embarrassed by my original post.  Nonetheless, I am unnerved by the fact that quotes from this discussion thread were used on SFGate.com.  It hadn't even occurred to me that that might be the case, which was naive, I understand.

Repost from /r/seahawks.  Turns out the choking motion might have been a reference to his fellow Beats by Dre endorser's commercial.

I'm not sure I know anyone who has dismissed Sherman's rant as inarticulate.

Rather, it's the force of the anger displayed at a perceived slight (what, the 49ers offended him by taking a shot toward his side of the field?) and his utter inability to be a gracious winner that have rankled many. Add to that his self-aggrandizing at the end of hard-fought team victory and surely you can understand why many have a negative opinion about him (As an aside, Ali's gloating came in an individual sport, whereas football is perhaps the quintessential team sport - I think that is a significant difference when you start drawing comparisons). You can be gracious without being banal - I don't know why many here are conflating the two.

Finally, I've lived in this country since I came to Stanford as an undergrad, but I have yet to understand people's desire to drag race into every contentious issue. You do realize that there are colors beyond black and white, and many of them are here on the Cardboard.

Re: Richard Sherman = classless - Hulk01 - 01-20-2014

Cornfed, I am sure that you realize that the city of San Francisco is a useless sample area for feelings about a player who beat the San Francisco 49ers, hates San Francisco's head coach, taunts one of San Francisco players, gave the choke sign to San Francisco's QB and most visible player, and attended a college that is the loathed rivals of graduates of the Bay Area's largest university.  Did you expect to hear one positive comment?

I was in a bar last night half the continent from Seattle, and the vitriol between the Niners and Hawks fans suggsted Auburn vs. Alabama.  The bar's host was joking with my friend (and a friend of Connor McFadden, btq) that he was going to have to deputize us to break up the fist fights that looked imminent.  Don't know what that is all about but in a rougher area after another round, that place would have gone scary.  There is some serious hate between these teams and their fans--1800 miles from either city.

I heard comments from a half-dozen 30 years old Minneapolitans plus several of my followers in other countries.  It appears that Sherm actually made a lot of new fans, particularly among the guys who listened to his later interviews and not just the whopper with Andrews.

I do not understand the criticism that he made the interview all about him and gave no credit to his team.  He had 30 seconds to answer Andrew;s question which was "take me through that last play."  He said the guy was an idiot to try to beat him and he proved it.  Then he capped that statement with a loud L.O.B., a reference some of these critics must not understand.  L.O.B., as most of you know but these critics do not, means Legion of Boom.  That's the nickname of the Seahawk defense.  That's the team.

And as for the tirades and dubious behavior, are we worse off for John McEnroe and Tiger Woods?

Re inarticulate:  I saw a tweet and one other comment that said Sherman was inarticulate.  It was the first references that I saw; we had the sound off by then and I missed his comments.  I expected to call up the interview video and see him babbling uncharacteristically.  He wasn't.  Not even close.

Re the bewilderment over the responses to Sherm's comments: These Stanford boards are thick with Niner fans and guys who loathe Pete Carrol.  That has a strong influence.

I love this kid.  Have for six years.  Period and exclamation point.  I couldn't love Richard Sherman more if he'd devoted the time to running over my  ex-wife with his Lexus.

OK, let's address these.

1. You've said "know" in your first sentence, so I'm not refuting you. But I think many people have called him inarticulate. Here's a Twitter search; admittedly light on examples: https://twitter.com/search?q=richard%20sherman%20inarticulate&src=typd&f=realtime

Here's Richard Sherman with communications: https://twitter.com/search?q=richard%20sherman%20communications&src=typd

I don't want to call out specific people on my Facebook feed, but there were several there. So it's not a not-uncommon meme.

2. Race is an interesting one, as always. The "classiness!" folk do target white athletes on occasion -- Johnny Manziel; Jimmy Connors; McEnroe. And then there are gradations of this type of thinking. The first person I encountered who thought this way was my grandfather, who liked Barry Sanders's propensity to just hand the ball off to the ref. But this was more of a preference than something like the national freakout. (He is also black, which, again, goes to the point that it's complicated.) Then there are people who lose their damn mind when something like this happens.

So it's not as if "classiness!" is a pure ploy directed at young black and brown athletes to get them to behave in a way society at large would prefer them to. But there sure are a few people who felt that way: http://deadspin.com/dumb-people-say-stupid-racist-shit-about-richard-sherm-1504843629

But it definitely seems to me society gets a bit uncomfortable when young black and brown males, in particular, don't behave in exactly the way they expect. (Trayvon Martin smoked pot *once*.)

Re: Richard Sherman = classless - CJ90 - 01-20-2014

Speaking of race, class, generational differences, etc., I find it interesting to compare and contrast reactions to Sherman to reactions to other controversial actions involving former Stanford athletes and coaches.  Maybe most interesting is that a couple of the harshest critics of Sherman's Sunday antics were big time defenders of Mike Montgomery in the incident where he shoved Crabbe last year.  So much so that they not only thought Monty's actions were acceptable, but that they were perfectly appropriate.  They thought it was BS that Monty was forced to apologize, after he initially defended his actions in the postgame presser.

Re: Richard Sherman = classless - CrazedZooChimp - 01-20-2014

I love the Niners, I hate the Seahawks, I really hate Pete Carroll, and I still like Sherman.  I don't really understand the people that mad about it.  There is also clearly a history between him and Crabtree, and one that would not surprise me if Crabtree initiated it (I don't have a whole lot of respect for Crabtree, as a guy who I think has managed to "miss" training camp every year he's been on the Niners...).

I didn't look back to see if this blog by Sherm this morning had been posted, but it's pretty good:  http://mmqb.si.com/2014/01/20/richard-sherman-interview-michael-crabtree/

I'm particularly glad he called out Seattle's asshole, entitled, delusional fan base for being dipshits (with less cursing than I can manage...).

edit:  oh, also, why the hell did Kaepernick try to make that pass?  Damn it...

I change my mind.  Sherman should coach.

Re: Richard Sherman = classless - beatla14 - 01-20-2014

Sherman is a breath of fresh air.

Sometimes that air doesn't have the taste all of us want, but it is fresh (in this case meaning new).

I did have a problem with him walking after Crabtree and slapping him on the butt. That is just kicking someone when they are down, no need for that. Admittedly I do understand the urge, having played in games where there is some trash talking,  to just rub it in people's faces after you win. On the other hand though, in my humble opinion, there is no need for it.

He's a smart guy, Sherman, he also has a chip on his shoulder, and he plays with it. There isn't anything wrong with that. It's also paradoxical to me that everything is supposed to be about the team in the NFL. What is the average career length in the NFL? How much money do these players actually make? In comparison to the owners of the teams in the league, its a pittance. NFL stands for Not For Long, Sherman should do anything he can to be relevant, because once his playing days are over he is bound to be on NBC, CBS or FOX covering the NFL in some way.

Again, talking to Crab right after his season was effectively ended was low. Everything else? Raw emotion and eloquence combined.

Re: Richard Sherman = classless - jeboody - 01-20-2014

i think for sherman, he will keep doing things like that post-game butt slap, good-game-handshake-attempt to those who slight him (according to sherman's brother, crabtree "tried to fight him" at some charity event).  doesn't mean there isn't a high road to take, but it's not so egregious IMO

there was some article where dougie fresh said something to the effect: if you don't talk to sherm, he won't talk; but if you do, prepare for hell.  or something like that
