RE: NBA Discussion - Mick - 12-13-2023

Draymond Green is suspended indefinitely.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/39108236/golden-state-warriors-draymond-green-suspended-indefinitely-nba

I suspect the Warriors aren't unhappy about this. Gives them a chance to play other people, try other things.

I think it's a net neutral re: cap. I think Draymond draws half his pay, but the Warriors lose half Draymond's pay-related salary cap space.

Finally, the league decides to get serious about stopping Green's thuggish on-court behavior. Maybe this will get his attention, but maybe not. He may be too headstrong to change his conduct. Yes, as Kerr said, the Warriors need Draymond, but no, they don't need the repeated blows to their team reputation and to team chemistry that Green causes. Let him go.

The Warriors are 3-8 in games that Draymond has missed or been ejected, and 7-5 in games in which he has fully participated.

Yep. It may be unfortunate, but Kerr speaks truth.

Warriors have used four different starting lineups in the 8 games that Draymond has not participated at all. The most successful of the lineups -- by a wide margin -- is Chris Paul, Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Klay Thompson and Kevon Looney. 125.5 offensive rating, 109.8 defensive rating.

Warriors are in a tough spot. They still have Curry  playing at historically great levels. But Thompson is a shell of what he was. Green is a liability, who they unfortunately just signed for several years. Some of the young players off the bench are nice players. But I don’t think they have a difference maker which in the NBA is crucial.

It’s only a matter of time before they trade Chris Paul. Not sure what they’ll get. it depends if they package him with Kuminga, which has been suggested.

I think it’s tough for Kerr  to go into “rebuild“ mode with what he’s got. But to an extent, I think that’s what they have to do. At best, this team is an eight through 10. And that very well may be a reach.

I’ve said this before I’ll say it again, they remind me of the Giants circa 2017. The 2022 championship was a lot like the Giants and 2014. The team actually had no business winning the title.  Now, they are an aging team with contract issues. With a franchise icon that is a free agent at the end of the year. Sound familiar?

I wonder about Thompson a little bit. He just scored 30 against a good Clippers team. Is it an outlier, or is he finally dialed in? We'll see over the next 20 games.

I wonder about Kerr.  Has he figured out the right starting/bench mix?

I wonder about Draymond.  Is he coming back? If so, when? Should he? Is the NBA signalling to the Warriors that Draymond has been PNG'd?

I wonder about Podziemski. He ranges from mediocre to exciting on offense. I have yet to see him play well on defense (and I know his defensive rating is the best on the team, go figure).

I wonder about Wiggins. What's going on inside his head?

I wonder (and worry) about Kuminga. How long will he put up with meager playing time?

Lots of question marks. Some answers within the next 20 games, I suspect.

Ocken25@yahoo.com - BrevinsBest - 12-16-2023

Thompson may have had a good shooting night, but he had 1 rebound and was -12. That’s not good.

RE: NBA Discussion - newguy - 12-17-2023

unrelated to the Warriors, but Keegan Murray of the Sacramento Kings made 11 straight 3-pointers against the Jazz last night.

I wonder how Green, Wiggins and Thompson would be faring if they had Steph's off-season conditioning program.

RE: NBA Discussion - Mick - 12-19-2023

NBA has established a minimum amount of time off for Draymond: three weeks.

RE: NBA Discussion - Mick - 12-20-2023

Warriors beat the #1 team in the east last night, Boston Celtics (20-6) in overtime, 132-126.

Most intriguing to me were the five players who finished the last 10 minutes of the game: Chris Paul, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Jonathan Kuminga and Trayce Jackson-Davis. The two best shooters, the two most athletic, the best rebounder (TJD had 13 in 29 minutes) and the best able to control the ball. Chris Paul had 10 assists and 0 turnover, third time this season, which is a tie for the full season record of the Warriors, most 0 turnover/double digit assist games.

I think that should be the starting lineup. I think Wiggins gets overwhelmed as a starter and does better with the backups. I think Podziemski does better against backups. Part of Draymond's problems is his reactions in emotional situations...and he's going to need to play himself back into game shape. He should come off the bench. Moody is a decent shooter and rebounder. Looney's always been a fill in guy, and he can get rebounds coming off the bench. Saric and GP2 can play with either lineup.

RE: NBA Discussion - g1313 - 12-20-2023

That was an extremely fun game to watch, especially since I was expecting the dubs to get blown out. Glad to see Steph and Klay with some clutch shooting, and TJD with some game-saving blocks that had me jumping off the couch.

Not a good sign for the long term to see the Celtics' g-league 7 footer subbing in for injured porzingis grab rebound after rebound over the much smaller warriors though.

True, and on a per-36 minute basis, Queta (the g-league seven footer who subbed for Al Horford, who started) is a very good rebounder, it's his "thing." Queta had 10 rebounds, Horford had 12, and the only Warrior in double figures was Jackson-Davis with 13...but at the end of the day, the Warriors outrebounded the Celtics last night, 59-55. And the Celtics scored 65 on the Warriors in the first half, but on the second night of a back to back, they have scored 74 against the Kings.

TrumpCard - TrumpCard - 01-04-2024

Warriors looked good tonight, but Curry will still need to rely on rep and past accolades to be named a starter for the all-star game. Seems clear that SGA is now the better player, but casual fans don’t notice because he’s in OKC, far from the spotlight.

RE: NBA Discussion - old spanish trail - 01-04-2024

Looked good but not good enuf. Curry tremendous and then not. Dumb risky pass allowed the Joker to win it with a 35 ft shot at the buzzer.

TrumpCard - TrumpCard - 01-04-2024

Wow, that’s why they play to the end. I thought it was over.

RE: NBA Discussion - Leftcoast - 01-05-2024

Just finished watching my recording of the Warrior-Nugget game.  That was a real gut-check loss to let the Nuggets come back from an 18 pt (!) deficit in the final 10 minutes.  Wow.

Everyone had a part in the collapse - Steph made an poor pass to allow the turnover and winning basket, Chris Paul and Klay played poor defense, no one shot well and they generally acted like the game was over with 10 minutes before it really was.

The Warriors can't stand pat at the trade deadline if they don't want this season to end when the regular season does.  I know the big 3 want to go out together but no one other than Curry should be untouchable.

There was a time that the Warriors were so good that they didn't have to pay attention to fundamentals...witness their ongoing lack of concern over turnovers. Well now they're not the athletes they once were, and they've started to slip. Defense isn't as tight, passes aren't as crisp, focus gets lost on certain plays. Of the five who were largely present on the recent NBA finals teams (Curry, Wiggins, Thompson, Green and Looney), only Curry still plays at a consistent high level. Thompson and Wiggins are hit and miss. They're still strong, just not as strong, and their supporting cast is good, just not as good as they once were. Paul is good, not great. At least his shoot is coming around, but none of them defend as well as they used to.

And frankly...I wonder about Kerr. As he continues to commit to the Old Guard, he starves playing time for the young ones. As Bill Walsh used to say, better to lose a player a year early than a year late. Well, it's too late for Thompson, Green, Looney and Wiggins...at their salary range, they're untradeable, at least not for value. Even though Thompson and Paul are on expiring contracts, Looney is affordable and Wiggins has a moderate (by NBA standards) contract, I don't see any of them returning a first round pick or front line starter. Maybe a solid younger player...maybe. Based upon their 16-18 record, I would recommend that Dunleavy start initiating and listening to trade offers. They have a solid younger core that they need to build around. The only trade rumors I hear are about Kuminga, one of two athletic players on that time. The team is built like Kerr...a highly skilled team with limited athleticism. Almost all of their players fit that mold.

I have to agree - get hopping on working whatever trade(s) we can get, subito - the Dubs currently have no picks in the 2024 draft so time is of the essence.
