I confess to being confused as to the NFL HoF's methods for selecting RBs. Minimum yardage for guaranteed admission seems to be 12,000 yards. There are 15 HoF-eligible RBs who have achieved that number, all 15 are in the HoF. Less than 12,000, it's a real grab bag. Fred Taylor and Steven Jackson didn't make it, but John Riggins and OJ Simpson did. After OJ, there are 12 RBs between 9,796 and 11,102 yards who aren't in the HoF. Joe Perry is in, but not Chris Johnson or Shaun Alexander...but then Earl Campbell is in. Ricky Watters, Ahman Green and Terry Allen aren't in...but Jim Taylor is.

Between 8,000 and 9,000 yards, which encompasses Roger Craig, Herschel Walker, Gerald Riggs, Priest Holmes, Maurice Jones Drew, DeAngelo Williams, Freeman McNeil, Stephen Davis...only Larry Csonka and Jim Taylor are in. The other 10 eligible backs are not in.

There are 100 running backs between 5,000 and 8,000 yards. Only seven RBs are in, mostly from an older era: Terrell Davis, Leroy Kelly, John Henry Johnson, Hugh McIlhenny, Lenny Moore, Ollie Matson and Floyd Little. So is Gale Sayers, but he's a special case.

I think Frank Gore will make it as the #3 overall RB (16,000 yards exactly), but I have well-meaning friends who seriously question as to whether Gore belongs in. There are some great 49er RBs in the HoF (McIlhenny, Matson, Perry, Simpson, John Henry Johnson), but a fair number of other possibly-deserving RBs who have more yards than HoFers McIlhenny, Matson & Moore (Garrison Hearst, Roger Craig, Rickey Watters, Charlie Garner, Wendell Tyler, Ken Willard, Delvin Williams).

TDs might have an impact. You're right, 95 seems to be the line of demarcation. Roger Craig has 73. OJ, James Lofton and Bob Hayes all have 76, they're in. Chuck Foreman, Harold Jackson and Bill Brown had the same number, they're not in. Christian has 80. At 95, he should be assured to be in. At 84, former 49er Joe Perry is in, as is Calvin Johnson. Andre Rison and Herschel Walker are not. As for Ricky Watters...with 91, he's not in, but the other four...Isaac Bruce, Tony Dorsett, Edgerrin James and Bobby Mitchell...are in. Maybe it's the racial slurs he used when coaching, maybe it was the "For who...for what?" interview after his miserable debut with the Eagles.

One fact Joe Perry played 12 game seasons

Mick, I’m as statistically minded as they come but I think it’s pretty fundamental this isn’t about reaching statistical thresholds but rather a subjective determination of whether somebody was one of the greats. If one wanted a metric, more illuminating than yards or touchdowns might be All Pro and Pro Bowl recognition. McCaffrey should be targeting six Pro Bowls. Solid chance with five.

Frank Gore and Ricky Watters never made All Pro. That’s a debilitating weakness in convincing voters to call somebody worthy of the Hall of Fame when they were never the best at their position, even for a single year. This is the same thing that keeps Plunkett out (though in his case it’s even more stark as Gore and Watters made five Pro Bowls each while Plunkett made zero). Ultimately I think most voters look at Hall of Fame as a way to capture who the best in a given era was. And of course subjectivity and other things come into play. John Riggins in but Roger Craig not is profoundly stupid.

RE: NFL cuts / Stanford alums - Nobadeer - 12-18-2023

If CMC stays healthy, he could reach 95 TDs in the next season or two?

And do Pro Bowls really matter? With all of the injuries and opt-outs, there are some fairly average or even below average players who end up in that game. E.g., at the 2023 Pro Bowl, the AFC QBs included . . .  Tyler Huntley and Derek Carr !?

The All-Pro accolade seems much more relevant.

CMac rules.

For those not able to see the video, CMac is at a signing event for Fanatics and someone put a USC hat in front of him. He says, "I'm not signing that!" Then he proceeds to write the 2015 P12 championship game score on it along with his stats from that game.

I fully realize that. I'm deploring it, is my message. Gore and Steven Jackson each reach 1,000+ yards for eight seasons. Not in. OJ Simpson only had two seasons better than Gore's and Jackson's best ('73 and '75) and really he only had four seasons that were terrific, and a fifth where he was just over the 1,000 yard threshold...basically he played in the NFL for 11 years, but was effective for five and all pro first team just twice. Marcus Allen's in the hall of fame, only had more than 1000 yards three times (once just barely), and had one great season with 1,759 yards. All pro just one time, his one MVP year. And don't get me started on Joe Namath. At least Plunkett has a .500 career record (exactly) at 72-72. Namath is below .500. And why is Hornung in the hall? Inveterate gamble, led the league in rushing TDs once, never had more than 681 yards. Stabler? All pro first team once, 2nd team once, two other pro bowls in a 15 year career. Considerably more INTs than TDs.

And why does the 1969 KC Chiefs defense have six in the Hall? Two linemen, two linebackers, two DBs. The Steel Curtain Steelers only have four

Whatever. Lynn Swann is in the hall, Roger Craig isn't. Neither is Torry Holt or Andre Johnson, both 7x Pro Bowlers. Completely unbelievable to me.

Baseball's the opposite. Play reasonably well for many years, and you're in; e.g., Rabbit Maranville, .658 OPS, 60% of his career in the live ball era, he's on 209 of 252 ballots. Only led the league in one category in 23 years, ABs in 1922.

That's the best video I've seen in years...

He also drew a circle with a line through it over the logo on the hat before signing it.

I couldn't see the video in Chrome but it worked fine when I switched to Edge. No idea why. Worth the trouble.

Hah! I love McCaffrey.

They won.  Solomon Thomas made a whole lot more money from that game.  All good.

RE: NFL cuts / Stanford alums - Nobadeer - 12-26-2023

Colby Parkinson caught his second TD reception of the season, the game winner for Seattle at Tenn.

Davis Mills subbed in late and compiled 15 of 32 for 149 yds and two TDs for the Texans, who otherwise got blasted by the Cleve. Browns and their resurgingly "elite" QB Joe Flacco (famous brother of former LSJU DB John Flacco).

CMC had a decent game for the face-planted Niners. MVP! MVP!

RE: NFL cuts / Stanford alums - Nobadeer - 12-31-2023

Michael Wilson caught his third TD of the season in the Cardinals' upset win over the Eagles.

Okereke had 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks in the NYG loss to the Rams.

CMC held under 100 scrimmage yards vs. Washington; he didn't play much in the second half due to what looked like a strained calf? He should rest up and "opt out" of the Niners meaningless season finale next week!

As a Rams fan, I wouldn't mind that at all.  :-)

RE: NFL cuts / Stanford alums - Nobadeer - 01-11-2024

Michael Wilson caught 6 passes for 95 yards (best of his rookie season) in the season finale for Arizona. He finished the year with 38 receptions for 565 yards and 3 TDs, in 13 games.

His AZ rookie teammate Elijah Higgins finished with 12 receptions for 140 yards and 1 TD, in 9 games.

Meanwhile, the Bengals' Trenton Irwin ended up with 25 receptions for 316 yards (both career highs) and 1 TD, in 10 games.

On to the postseason for CMC, Jake Bailey of the Dolphins, Blake Martinez of Pitt., Dalton Schultz and Davis Mills of Houston and Justin Reid of KC. Along with Tanner McKee of Phila. and maybe a couple others who are on rosters but didn't see the field so far.

Andrus Peat continues to be a horse with the Saints. Switched to LT mid-season, help up very well.

Davis Mills getting to play last 10 minutes in Texans slaughter of Browns.

And Dalton Schultz with a 37-yard TD pass reception to put Houston up 24-14 going into halftime.

RE: NFL cuts / Stanford alums - old spanish trail - 01-13-2024

Did you guys know that Ethan Bonner, who had a pretty good senior year, has bounced back and forth from the Dolphins practice squad? He was injured alot on the Farm and finally learned how to tackle in his sr year. Sort of amazing.

RE: NFL cuts / Stanford alums - PVTree - 01-13-2024

Of course, Justin Reid playing safety for the Chiefs at a high level.

Bailey punting for the Dolphins.
