Your dream team is my nightmare disaster. Old, fragile, slow, and a nightly target for the boisterous new set to put up highlight reels dunking over yesterday's stars.
The Warriors won't beat the new tier 1 teams by adding another expensive and past his prime star.

Right. I was just thinking of all the early conversation leading up to the draft. I think by decision day most thought Edwards was the best pick.
Didn't Melo come with a bunch of baggage, namely his dad? The W's probably could have handled that, but why bother. . . .

Things worked out fine for the Warriors despite the misguided #2 pick. They won a title, and that’s what matters. My response to this sub-thread was to say there’s no point in regretting missing out. If teams wallowed in regrets, the Blazers would have just folded up shop ~40 years ago, and again 17 years ago.

Brandin Podziemski was elected to the 2024 All-Rookie team. 64 of the 99 writers submitting votes selected him to the first team, 33 selected him to the second team, two left him off the ballot. Holmgren, Victor Wembanyama, Brandon Miller and Jaime Jaquez were the other four. Dereck Lively, Amen Thompson, Keyonte George, Cason Wallace and GG Jackson were on the second team.

Trayce Jackson-Davis of the Warriors missed out on the second team by a single vote, receiving 42 2nd team votes.

This article suggests that the Warriors are not in the mood to bring the band back together again:
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40424920/warriors-prepare-emotion-klay-thompson-negotiations
If the Warriors really do intend to duck under the luxury tax, yet not completely rebuild, then they have ~28mm combined for Paul and/or Thompson. I think that means they have to let go of one or both of those guys, at a minimum.
Would the remaining roster be good enough to make the playoffs considering the Warriors didn't make it this year and their core is aging?
If even making the playoffs is unlikely, let alone contending for another title, is it time to dismantle and rebuild?
I don't think the Warriors ownership is in it to save a couple of bucks, but if they can stash away some first round picks, would they do that?
Given Curry's salary, if the Warriors wanted to trade him, could they get two first round picks as part of the return package?

The band has missed the playoffs three of the last five years, and Klay -- at best -- should be a sixth man. I think he can still do very well against backups, but he thinks of himself as a Hall of Famer. I think he has to go.
Dunleavy gave a little clue in an interview earlier today when he said that the Warriors needed to grow from within and develop their current players. He spoke at length and in support of Kuminga, Podziemski, TJD and Moody. They're keeping Looney for a year. They have Curry and Draymond. My guess is GP2 comes back with a longer contract for less $ per year. I think Lester Quinones is highly underrated, both on offense and defense, I think he could contribute. Maybe they think Gui Santos can contribute as well. That's ten, and they're likely to lose both Klay and Chris Paul, I think. Maybe they can get someone at #52 in the draft, some 24 year old whose bloom is off the rose, a bit like TJD.
JTA is available... ;). Could probably pick up James Wiseman for a song.

CP and KT are both gone.
Now the roster is not good enough to contend for a playoff spot, but the team is still over the cap.
How long before Steph asks to leave so he can take one more shot at contending?
The good news: If GSW were to trade Curry for expiring contracts plus a couple of first rounders, the rebuilding process might go smoothly.
There's already pretty decent youth movement and the team has all its own first round picks.
The 2025 pick easily could be top 10 in a draft that's a lot better than the one that just passed.
Plus, if Curry were to leave, Green's contract would be the only really overpriced one after this year.
Wiggins' contract is risky, but it would be fine or good if the high effort version of the player were to show up again.
RE: NBA Discussion -

I hate to say it but Klay leaving at this point is addition by subtraction. We will miss his scoring, but the constant sulking, drama, horrid shot selection, and overly long leash that came from his relationship with Kerr (along with Wiggins and Dray) sunk the first half of last season.
I'll forever be grateful for his role in 4 titles. I wish him the best. I hope being free of the weight of expectation from his past in golden state allows him to be the off the bench flamethrower he is best suited to be at this point.
Moving on, I liked the swing for the fences move in going for PG, but it didn't work out. I'm fine with a swing for the fences for Markannan but expect the price to be too ridiculous. I like the Melton move.
Otherwise I'm fine with keeping our powder dry and allowing the young guys to step into bigger roles. There's always another soon to be disgruntled star in the NBA. If we can boost their value enough, that makes it easier to snag a Giannis or KD or Mitchell who gets disillusioned mid season. We also may surprise some folks with what Curry, Dray, and the younguns can do.
RE: NBA Discussion -
Mick - 07-01-2024
Chris Paul had trouble bringing the ball up last season. Podz had to actually bring the ball up on a few occasions. He's still very young, just 21. He'll still be 21 when the season starts. He's got some upside, and some fire. Same with TJD.
I don't mind losing Thompson. I'm sure we can find someone else to shoot 0 for 10 in the biggest game of the year.
I think Kuminga is finally starting to get it. And I think Moody has been criminally underused. With Paul, Thompson and Lester Quinones gone, there will be more playing time for Kuminga, Moody and Podz. Lindy Waters will be fine, and I like Melton as a defender.
I would be surprised if their 2nd round pick, Just, the 7 footer from the Netherlands, makes an impact this year.
I don't think Wiggins, at age 29, will magically return to his 2022 self. If we could trade him and a pick for Zach LaVine, Laurie Markonnen (unlikely) or Gary Trent, that's a possibility. Trent's only 25, shoots 38.3 from 3 pt. range. Lavine only played 25 games and has a monster of a contract, so the Warriors wouldn't have to give up much, I suspect. Markonnen would be expensive; prob. Kuminga, Wiggins and two draft picks.
They have 12 players, counting Gui Santos, not counting Pat Spencer.

Completely agree. Incidentally, Bleacher Report lists the Mavs' KT deal as one of the five biggest FA overpays. He has no mobility left, can't play defense any more, and was never a guy to get rebounds or make the hard shot at the rim. Injuries and age have restricted him largely to perimeter shooting. And the Warriors got two second-round picks out of it, both next year.

The Warriors will fete him appropriately, retire his number, put his jersey in the rafters, etc.

The Warriors need to rebuild. No need to delay ripping off the band aid. I certainly would not give a lottery pick in return for a player who would not lift the team into the playoffs. Markkanen is the only one here I'd consider.
In response to the comment above about KD or Mitchell or Giannis coming in a deal near the trade deadline, that's a pipe dream. The Warriors are capped, will be under .500 at the deadline, and have an untradeable malcontent/thug in Green. Why would a star want to come into that situation. Especially KD who already left GS once in part because of Green. Worse yet, to land a disgruntled star in a trade, the Warriors would need to part with close to 50MM in salary, which would leave Curry, Green, the new star, and scrubs. That's not enough to lift a sub-.500 team into the playoffs. Sorry, if there's a disgruntled star, that person is probably going to join a team that can contend for a title, not a team that will struggle to make the playoffs.

I thoroughly agree that Klay is now a major liability on D. Moreover, he's never been a rebounder or a good passer. He feels aggrieved if not angry that the Warriors 'only' offered him $48 million for 2 years after what he's done for the team. But he is no longer able to take any double-team pressure off of Steph and his D is matador-like.

Best case scenario for KT is one good year and he helps the Mavs over the top. Years two and three, he will continue his rapid decline, I suspect. It's interesting how he feels he's still the KT of seven years ago.
On a separate note, Cleveland demanded Kuminga in the trade for Paul George, but Dunleavy considered JK untouchable, at least for that trade. Happily.
Last note...a tiny little voice at the back of my brain is wondering whether the Warriors might trade Wiggins and/or Draymond at the 2024/2025 trade deadline...or even Curry, if they had a good enough offer. Sure, the Warriors might do very well, the young guys might collectively surprise on the upside. It's possible. But if not...and a team is desperate at the 50 game mark...then, who knows?

This article implies that Lacob controlled negotiations with KT and that he fumbled the ball. I disagree, I think Lacob did this on purpose. I don't think he and/or the team wanted Thompson back at any price, given Thompson's substantial decline in skills. The Warriors will never trade Curry. Heck, he is consulted on all major moves by ownership prior to any decisions.
Of all the athletes to play in the Bay Area in the last 75 years, I think Curry ranks #1 (yes, ahead of Montana, Mays, etc.) in terms of fan appeal. No one has captured the imagination of those who follow sports in this area like Curry. I would expect Curry to sign one more contract before moving on to his pursuing his corporate interests full time.
RE: NBA Discussion -
TrumpCard - 07-02-2024
Funny you mention Montana and Mays because they both ended their careers elsewhere. The NBA's collective bargaining agreement makes basketball a brutal business, even more than the NFL and MLB were in those days. So, my prediction is that, if the Warriors are sub-.500 at the deadline (which they will be), then Curry will want out, and the Warriors will be willing to oblige. The biggest obstacle will not be sentimentality, but whether there's a team in contention that can put together a package with enough salary and picks to work out. Where there's a will, however, there's a way.

Listening to multiple talking heads on KNBR, while his play was one issue, his demeanor was another. One actually called him out as a "bitch". Ouch. Great persona to the fans, not so much in the clubhouse, allegedly. No clue if that's accurate, but the multiple accusations are telling.
Wish him luck, and hope the W's can find somebody else to generate some interest alongside Steph, Dray, and K. That's K for Kuminga.

I actually really like the moves they've made for melton and Anderson. I believe we will be better then last year even if no other moves are made. But we are still a number 2 scoring option short of having a legitimate shot of contending in the west. If we can't get Lauri then demar derozan could be a sign and trade option.

"Blunt and honest leadership style". Gobert punches Anderson, then retreats quickly. Gobert (two points in 13 minutes) had played very lackadaisical defense (see below) and Anderson (horrors) called him out on it.
