Time to pull the emergency tanking procedure lever.

De'Anthony Melton's been out much of the last year, he was a healthy scratch last night for "ACL injury management." He injured his AC on 11/12/24, season-ending surgery to repair it.

When Butler went out, the Warriors were leading 77-75. They outscored Miami 58-37 the rest of the way. Maybe they'll be okay without Butler, meaning a play-in team. Curry will get more double teams, so he'll get more assists. He had 11 last night (with 19 points), he's only had 11 one other time this season, on January 14. They're going to have to replace Butler's 20 ppg -- which weren't very efficient -- Butler's eFG% (.554) is about the same as Moody's and Post's (both .553). Will Richard, on the other hand, is tops on team at .611. Gui Santos, also strong at .582, he'll probably get a bigger role. Kuminga is 2nd to last at .475.

With Kuminga? When asked if Butler's injury meant more playing time for Kuminga, Kerr replied "Sure. Absolutely."

Kuminga and Buddy Hield were traded for Kristaps Porzingis tonight.  Trayce Jackson-Davis was traded to the Raptors for the Lakers' 2026 second-round pick.

Kristaps Porzingis, aka "Crystal". He's got great stats over his career - when he plays....

He's the Todd Shell of the NBA, all right. Both his playing time and the number of games he plays has declined three years in a row, though his per-36-minutes numbers are still strong.

Only positive I can really say is that Kuminga had the worst disparity on the team between offensive rating (103) and defensive rating (115), a -12. Buddy's wasn't much better at 109 and 114 respectively. Second worst among the rotation players was Draymond (-11), then Melton (-7), then Buddy. Interestingly, TJD's was +113, 125 ORating, 112 DRating. Always thought he got a bad rap. Best of the starters, far and away, was Butler at +21. Curry was only +4.

RE: NBA Discussion - TrumpCard - 02-05-2026

I think the trade was just intended to dump Hield's salary for next year in return for an expiring contract.  I doubt there's much confidence that Porzingis will help the team a lot.  The Warriors are already out of the running for this year because of Butler's ACL.  Next year, they'll owe ~150mm to an ancient core (Curry, Butler, Green).  Though they'll have a couple of young role players who they got for decent value in the draft (Moody, Podz), they'll have no stars anywhere near their prime.  I don't see Melton choosing to return to that roster for cheap.  The "two timeline" thing didn't work out, and it's time to rebuild.  Fortunately, the Warriors have all their own first round picks except for one top-20 protected pick in 2030, so the rebuild is feasible.

RE: NBA Discussion - gocard14 - 02-05-2026

I hate it. We are waving the white flag on the Steph curry era, which is a brobdingnagian mistake IMO. He is still amazing, and we shall never see his like again. All those future first round pics are unlikely to be all stars, much less a once in a generation player.

No there probably wasn't a move to salvage this year with Jimmy out with a torn ACL. But our FO seems allergic to making the incremental moves that then let you make the move to seal the deal. We either make the brobdingnagian (obvious) Giannis splash or give up.

Getting JJJ, or MPJ, or even Wiggins wouldn't make us a title contender this year. But it would have upgraded our talent to the point where Jimmy returning (or trading him) could push us over the top. Look at the nuggets. It was a series of incremental moves (trades for cam Johnson, valenciunas, etc) that took them from very good to great.

RE: NBA Discussion - Mick - 02-05-2026

From what I gather, the Warriors offered literally everything they could, and finished no better than third for Giannis. Apparently, the Bucks wanted young players rather than a slew of draft picks. Personally, I think they're out of their collective minds. Post-Curry, the Warriors are going to absolutely suck, for quite a while, and they will be a lottery pick for at least four of the next seven years after Curry retires. I'm glad they didn't get rid of their picks.

And I agree with both the Bucks and the Warriors' assessment of Kuminga and Podziemski. A family friend is a D3 head basketball coach, and he says that Kuminga has no basketball instincts except for around the basket scoring. Physical talent yes, mediocre shooter, plays defense when he feels like it. And Podziemski is exactly what his 19th overall pick suggests...a really good sixth man. He does well with backups, not so well with starters. Possibly the worst athlete in the NBA. I can see both why the Warriors wanted to trade the two of them and why the Bucks didn't want either of them.

If I were Dunleavy, I'd start from scratch. I'd get rid of everybody, build through the draft.

RE: NBA Discussion - TrumpCard - 02-05-2026

It's not the Warriors' fault.  The front office set it up so they could trade Kuminga and picks for a 3&D wing or a center.  Pair that player with Curry, Butler, Green, and a couple of role players.  Maybe you've got something.  They weren't going to beat the Spurs or Thunder anyway, but maybe they'd win a round in the playoffs.  Then Butler went down with an injury that will keep him out this whole year and half of next.  When the core is already 38, 36, and 36, a year of delay is rough.  I guess the Warriors could trade Butler's expiring contract at the deadline next year.  But will anyone give first round compensation for a 37 year old earning 60mm coming off an ACL?  I just think the team will be stuck until they fully embrace the rebuilt.  They do have a free spending GM when opportunity arises, so they could be interesting again in 4 years if things go well...

RE: NBA Discussion - fullmetal - 02-06-2026

Meanwhile, it looks like Maxime has hit a slump with the Kings.  He's been out of the starting lineup since 1/25, replaced by Domantis Sabonis, who has been on and off this season with injuries.  Maybe Sabonis has turned the corner on his health and is a more reliable starter now.  The Kings also recently signed fellow rookie center Dylan Cardwell to a four-year contract.  Cardwell is an amazing rebounder and shot blocker but not as offensively productive as Maxime, though right now I'm not sure Maxime is currently offensively productive either.

The Warriors concluded their season in an ignoble fashion last night getting crushed by the Suns. Man, they look old. And what little talent that team has is injured. Curry's contract is up next year, Kerr doesn't have a contract, Draymond has a player option. Cupboard is pretty bare.

I want to revise my prior comment. I think the Warriors will have lottery picks for seven of the next seven years.

Looks like things are getting interesting for the Warriors.  Green turned down his player option, and it looks like the Warriors are going to go after LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Win, lose or draw, that would be the epic old-man lineup, especially if they can get Butler back for the playoffs. And it will keep Al Horford from feeling too old. (Maybe Al has some pointers for the rest of the group?)

At this point, I'd rather have 33 year old Anthony Davis than 37 year old Butler and the conditional first round choice. I don't think Butler is going to come back at full strength anytime before the playoffs. He has a torn ACL. Average NBA return to play post-ACL tear is 372.5 days, and Butler is, as noted, going to be 37 in a few months. Here's the steps:

1. Draymond has already rejected the player option. A multi-year contract would free up $11 million or so.
2. Get Washington to accept Butler for Davis and draft capital, an unprotected first and a first swap.
3. Get LeBron to play for the full mid-level player exception of $15.049. Fallback is a sign-and-trade (seeya later, Moses Moody and maybe Will Richard) that takes it to $23 million?

In any event, it will take a full-court press with Curry, Draymond, Davis, Kerr, Dr. Celebrini...one last shot at the title, his last shot to play with Curry.

Other:
- 31 year old broken-down Porzingis, therefore, is gone
- Ageless 41-year old Al Horford is returning on a two-year, $14 million deal
- De'Anthony Melton is a wild card. $3.45 million player option, rumor is he wants to test free agency.
- I think Pat Spencer, Seth Curry, GP2, Post return.

Dunleavy has some work to do.

Quote:The Golden State Warriors are bringing back veteran center Kristaps Porzingis on a two-year, $40 million contract with a player option on the second season, agent Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management told ESPN's Shams Charania.

Porzingis is extending his current contract, allowing him to negotiate and agree with the Warriors before hitting the open market on Tuesday afternoon.
...
The Porzingis signing makes the math trickier for the Warriors to clear enough space to offer unrestricted free agent LeBron James the full $15.1 million nontaxpayer midlevel exception, but there remain paths for them to clear enough financial room, particularly given Draymond Green's decision to decline his $27.6 million player option and deliver the Warriors flexibility in the coming days.

RE: NBA Discussion - Mick - 07-19-2026

Fittingly, the Warriors selected one of the oldest players in the draft, 23-and-almost-24 year old Yaxel Landeborg. The Warriors Summer League team played the Memphis Grizzlies summer league team for the summer league championship and won 94-90. Landeborg outplayed #3 overall pick Cam Boozer. 21 points, 50% shooting, 10 rebounds.

He's out of shape (by his own admission). Lots of hands-on-his-knees time. Maybe he can do the famous Steph Curry conditioning.

I am loving everything I see and hear about Landeborg. He'll get his opportunites and I expect he'll surprise people with the extent of his contributions.

When he's dialed it, he's genuinely superb. If he can maintain it through the course of the game, he'll be the steal of the draft. If not...Joe Barry Carroll. To his credit, he has repeatedly acknowledged that he needs to get in NBA game shape.

Question: why did YL let himself fall OUT of NBA game shape after the college basketball season and the NBA pre-draft workouts?

Quote:Lendeborg played the Final Four and National Championship with a sprained MCL and a busted ankle. He spent about a month after the season away from the gym to recover.
