While we're having a fine day shooting the threeball, thanks mostly to you know who, when an elite opponent brings tight perimeter D, the only way to break that down is either to get passes into the center down low or take it to the hoop AND FINISH. When we get into the Dance, we;re going to run into an elite D or two, such as what South Florida played, and the hopes will rest on three balls or entry passes dpwn low. If we have a bad day with the threeball, then driving and dishing will be critical to our chances of  advancing. If we have no one who can drive hard to the hoop, then we'll live or die by the threeball, which is risky.

Keep an eye on Bosgana.  She can finish!

I've wondered that about her. She could be a gem in the rough.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Maryland, 12noon Saturday - martyup - 11-27-2021

Owusu has been playing with 4 fouls since the first half and has managed to score 30 points and pull down 5 rebounds.

Don't confuse fouling versus being called for fouls.  In a close game, those will be differently called.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Maryland, 12noon Saturday - BosCard - 11-27-2021

The end of the game was so ugly.  Turnovers, inability to rebound, missed layups.  And when Jerome tries to drive to the basket I cringe.

Don't forget to cancel your Flohoops subscriptions.

We come out of this tourney with wins over the #4 and #2 ranked teams, and a buzzer beater loss to a top 20 team.  I'd say that is pretty darn positive.

Man, the +/- for the subs was brutal.  And from the play-by-play the last 4 min was just a comedy of errors.  Oh well, there's a reason why some start and some don't.

Nice to see some scoring in our stats.  Just from the numbers, well-scouted and well-coached.

Owusu led all scorers despite playing the entire 2H with 4 fouls.  I would have liked to see her live.

I was reacting to live stats - wasn't able to view game unfortunately (at family gathering)

triangle2 - triangle2 - 11-27-2021

Van Gytenbeek’s minutes showed us similar issues from last season: her decision making as a distributor is shaky, too many turnovers, and bigger players try to post her up. She has a solid handle and is pretty mobile. Her shots didn’t fall today but she’s shown she has range out to the 3 point line. It feels like she’s eager to make things happen when she’s on the court, but in a backup role, her primary responsibility is no turnovers and run the offense.

I definitely enjoyed watching this game a lot more than either of the previous two. As for canceling Flohoops subscriptions, thanks for the reminder. Will do that, but not before taking a look at the Wash State vs NC State game, about to be on.

(11-27-2021, 02:51 PM)martyup Wrote:  It seems clear to me that Tara decided to see how we could do without our bigs being the focus.  Brink barely played in the first half and only has single digit minutes in the game.

Also, we are shooting 76.5% from the free throw line.  That is a huuuge improvement.

Cause & effect?
FT in Thursday's game,
   Brink 1-6
   Belibi, Jones, Lexie, Lacie  7-10
   Others  0-2
FT in yesterday's game,
   Brink 3-12
   Belibi, Jones, Lexie, Lacie 0-0
   Others (subs) 1-4
In today's game
   Brink 2-2
   Belibi, Jones, Lexie, Lacie 11-15
   Others 3-4

Over the 3 games,
   Brink 6-20  30%
   Belibi, Jones, Lexie, Lacie  18-25 = 72%
   Others 4-10  40%

The teams FT% depends upon who gets the FTA.
What bothers me is that Belibi, Jones, Lexie, Lacie got NO FTA against USF.  Did we concede a part of our offense?

So here's a fun guessing game to complete a feel-good day for us Stanford WBB fans:

After wins vs. #2 Maryland and #4 Indiana and a buzzer beater loss to #18 South Florida, where will Stanford land  in this forthcoming Monday's AP ranking?

My prediction:
***********
#4

Currently on FloHoops
  USC 47 UCF 50 (Cancun)  0:33 4th
Upcoming
3PM  NC State vs Wash State (Baha Mar)
4PM  Notre Dame vs Oregon State (Daytona Beach)

The schedule also has
2PM North Carolina vs Washington  (Goombay)  but the screen says "The action is over".   The game apparently happened at 9AM PST.  Washington lost 58-37.

It might be fun for us fans, but I'll bet Tara doesn't give a whit.

I agree, I'm also pretty sure she DOESN'T, hahaha!

You're almost certainly right about Tara, but yes, is fun for fan. As for me, I see Stanford coming in #6 or #7 -- the voters put a lot of emphasis on losses, and probably don't notice it was a buzzer beater.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Maryland, 12noon Saturday - M T - 11-27-2021

Now, a couple of home games against unranked teams.  And then the final two pre-season games, on the road against South Carolina  and Tennessee.  And then the PAC-12 gauntlet.

I feel the start of today's game, with Brink on the bench, might suggest that we may try that line up some more.  Opponents will need two game plans to play Stanford.

As for rankings, I don't really care.  The Maryland we played is not the team hyped on  ESPNW right now.  With the personnel they played today, they aren't a top-10 team, but do you rank them per today's team, per their record, or per their potential? (And, you can ask that about Stanford too).  I think #2 and #4 drop.  Whether others jump past us, I don't know.   I don't think #18 should jump past us, but they'll move up.  I'd say anywhere from #5 to #8 for Stanford.

Game report from Maryland - https://www.testudotimes.com/2021/11/27/22804964/no-2-maryland-womens-basketball-overpowered-in-86-68-loss-to-no-7-stanford

Stanford now gets a well-deserved two week break for finals before resuming the non-conference schedule vs. UOP and UC Davis.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Maryland, 12noon Saturday - BobK - 11-27-2021

Of Maryland ‘s top 6 scorers they were missing # 3. That’s it.
