Bracket here - https://www.ncaa.com/brackets/soccer-women/d1/2023

Stanford is a 2 seed opposite #1 seed UCLA. Also on Stanford's side of the bracket are 7 seed South Carolina, 6 seed Mississippi State and 3 seed Brown.

Opener vs. Pepperdine is Friday at 6 pm. TV on ESPN+.

P12 qualifiers - Stanford, UCLA, Colorado, USC, ASU.

ACC had as many qualifiers as the P12 - Clemson, Florida St, UNC, Notre Dame, Pitt. But 4 of those 5 are top 3 seeds with Clemson and FSU as #1s.

I am too lazy to look at the overall bracket, but I don’t think the committee tried very hard. They just took RPI and nibbled around the edges. Color me shocked.

Xavier and Brown are gross over seeds - Massey #41 and #39.

Mississippi St and SC on our side are #33 and #30, so they aren’t great shakes either.

I like our odds to get to the rd of 8, but obviously UCLA and a 2 seed does us no favors to get to the College Cup.

One other complaint - our first game is Massey #34 while 7 seed SC gets James Madison Massey …. #100.

Looks like for first round match ups the ncaa wanted to keep things very regional to keep costs down. I think we have one of the toughest unseeded first round opponents.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - oldalum - 11-06-2023

At least they didn't stick Santa Clara in our bracket yet again. Ultimately what hurt us is that our best win was against 7-seed Santa Clara, with ties against 1-seed UCLA, 3-seed Georgetown, and 8-seed USC. I just don't like putting the first- and second-place teams in the same conference in the same quarter of the bracket, it's not necessary: the seeding is not that precise.

Reminds me of the undefeated UCLA team that got a 2 seed two seasons ago. They lost in the 1st round to UC Irvine. Let's hope we bring our A game vs Pepperdine.  If we get past that matchup I, like Hieronymus, like our path to regional final. BYU got a 1 seed but actually has a much tougher path to the regional final. They start off having to face a team (Utah State) that actually beat them earlier this season. They may face USC in the 2nd round, and if they make to the regional final they may very well face North Carolina, which played one of the hardest schedules in the country and never trailed in any game at the 90 minute mark.  I'll take our 2 seed over BYU's schedule.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - Hieronymus - 11-07-2023

Per Jamesy yes I am sure travel figured heavily, but I do think seeding should give more of an advantage in the first round. Idaho or SD St would have been much nicer.

That said this team has been solid against good but not great teams. So I agree overall this bracket is very kind to us. We basically have to beat 3 teams in the 30s to get to UCLA. BYU definitely got a much worse draw.

I also very much agree with oldalum - I don’t like the PACs top 2 seeds in the same quarter of the bracket. Partly though I wanted to avoid UCLA until the College Cup.

Stanford has signed 7 players to their 2024 class. However, missing from the 7 is Gisele Thompson. Any insights if she’s turning pro? Any thoughts on this class?

Waiting waiting. The team hasn’t announced yet so waiting

Gisele has been practicing with Angel FC (the same team her sister passed us up for) and has even played preseason games with them.  She's outstanding but not the USWNT prospect that Alyssa was when she decided to skip college. It's also not likely that she would make the USWNT roster for the upcoming Olympics by turning pro (as Alyssa did for the World Cup). So I would hope she would still choose college. But there's nothing on her Instagram referencing Stanford whatsoever though so it doesn't look good.  This would be the 3rd recent recruit turning pro over Stanford (Onyeka Gamero signed with Barcelona's B team over Stanford in June). I'm a little surprised as Ratcliffe certainly does a good job developing world class players.

With Gisele we had the #1 class as ranked by TopDrawerSoccer. We'd still be pretty high without her. Three top 15 recruits is nothing to sneeze at. The student athletes that have signed are:

F Jaden Thomas (FC Dallas – No. 9)
D Ella Emri (San Diego Surf – No. 13)
M Charlotte Kohler (MVLA – No. 15)
M Samantha ("Sammy") Smith (Boise Thorns – No. 27)
D Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Boamah (Albion SC (CA) – No. 33)
GK Kaiya Jota (LA Breakers FC – No. 182)
D Sophie Murdock (MVLA - 3 star)

And by the way, I already love Jaden Thomas' family. This was her commitment photo![Image: i-K7fHh4v-X2.jpg]

Stanford wins against Pepperdine 3-0.

UCI defeated UCLA 1-0. UCI played with only 10 players in the last 15 minutes

The road to the College Cup just got a LOT easier. And Stanford looked STRONG against Pepperdine. Not counting any chickens, but I like Stanford's seeding much more now. :)

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - DenverCard - 11-10-2023

UCI scored at the 87th minute -- i.e. playing 10 v. 11.  They were outshot 22-2, but they made the most of their chances (obviously).

Brutal loss for the defending champions.  Now go off and enjoy the Big 10.

As a #1 seed, UCLA was of course playing at home.

Oh, and at this writing, 21 seeded teams have played.  They're 20-1.  Unbelievable.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - oldalum - 11-10-2023

wow. UCLA beat them at Irvine 4-0 earlier this season. (we beat them 2-1 at Irvine).
Irvine finished in 6th place in the Big West, they would not have made the tournament if they hadn't won their league's tournament. But they peaked at the right time in that tournament, beating the 4th, 2nd, and 1st place teams.

I attended that Stanford Stanford/UC Irvine game. Irvine actually got off to an early lead and we had a hard time breaking through. I watched the game with a parent of one of the Stanford players and we shared a lot of stressful moments together. Ultimately, it was two frosh (Shae Harvey and Joelle Jung) that bailed us out with a couple of impressive goals.  So I was shocked with UCLA's 4-0 win because Irvine looked very tough against us. I was glad they weren't on our side of the bracket.

This was a much bigger upset than UCI's prior two.  UCLA was a 2 seed two tournaments ago and USC was a 4 seed last year. Further, UCLA had returned most of its top players from its national champion team, brought in U23 International Ayo Uke as a transfer, and had the #1 recruiting class in the nation.

But none of that mattered. Irvine is very well coached and, like Santa Clara, seems to always figure things out come tournament time. (2 years ago UCLA had beaten UCI 3-1 in the regular season before losing to them 0-1 at NCAAs. Last season USC beat UCI 3-2 in the regular season before losing to them 0-2 at NCAAs. UCI made it to the 3rd round, farther than any Pac 12 team besides UCLA.)

Tough loss for UCLA. Good news is I don’t care about PAC pride. But no guarantees in college soccer. It’s certainly not Football or Volleyball where the best team always wins.

Now I really like our odds but see previous -  no guarantees.

On a side note, I see one of my gross over seeds - Xavier - is already toast. I expect Nebraska to come through the other side.

Hieronymus - Hieronymus - 11-11-2023

Well low and behold this was viewable on ESPN+. No deep analysis - the video quality wasn’t good enough to try. Looked like the 433 with Jung now entrenched as the 11th starter. Everyone in their normal spots when Jung starts. Pepperdine was very solid, looking like a team you might see in the second round but without a difference maker. Aikey had a brilliant first goal, showing what a difference maker looks like. Overall Stanford played well, but 3-0 flattered a bit.

It was a good solid win and we are moving on.

I also watched JMU vs the other USC, and it was a really odd game. Slooow, almost lethargic a lot of the time.  I sort of admire what JMU tries to do, but it didn’t work much at all. They were not skilled enough to execute the tactical possession plan, though the second half was better. They also don’t show the ability to switch gears from slow to fast.

So USC went 433. The stars are the goalie who was mostly untested; so I have no idea if SEC goalie of tthe year is legit. She was very quick off her line though. The other is the CF Barry who was the second leading scorer in the SEC. She is tall - 6 ft - but much more mobile and better with her feet than I expected. Lots of diagonal runs behind the defense. That plays to Evans and Wesley’s strengths better than a pure target forward would.

Otherwise, their left didn’t impress me at all. The real standout for me was the RF Zullo who triggered both goals. How she matches speed-wise vs. Brandt will be very interesting. Weirdly, both goals came from the CDM - Render (3rd team SEC);- who had 2 goals all season. I can’t imagine she will be that far forward much against us. The defense in the second half looked a bit vulnerable, but it was hard to get a good read overall. The CB’s looked a bit slow. Aikey may be able to eat them up. I do see one of the backs - Falla at RB - was also first team SEC. So yeah the right is much stronger then the left.

We will be the better team but see UCLA. No guarantees.
