RE: Stanford vs USC Game Thread - needle - 09-10-2022

I feel like SC will score 40+ on a majority of PAC teams.

I feel like a majority of PAC teams will score four TDs against this mediocre SC front seven.

The Stanford offense had some nice plays but overall I was not impressed. Fans focus on the offensive turnovers but I will note that there were very few penalties called against the Stanford offense. Perhaps that’s something to build on but to me it is disappointing that the points still are not coming more easily for a really talented group on that side of the ball. The guys are playing hard and smart but something isn’t working and now we have to wait and see how serious the injury to Smith is.

From the last five minutes of the first half until nearly the end of the third quarter, SC was pretty dominant. I think that’s the story of the game for me.

Maybe SC really is a top 10 team (possible but not probable).

So I am less optimistic about the season than I was before this game, but I do think six wins are possible. I think that’s the ceiling for this team, however.

The difference Winflop is that last year’s team quit and there was no quit in them tonight. They just don’t have any nasty guys on D, no elite corners (Kelly is not) or an attacking safety. Weak at LB and DT.

In a way Stanford has priced themselves out of the market by not taking transfers. It is a New World Order (Sorry Kevin Nash) in college football that lets teams load up every year. Stanford is playing canasta and the rest of the NCAA is playing Texas Hold Em. Will ultimately force the school to get out of the pool, IMO.

I'm pretty sure the 19 transfers make U$C Football the 4th largest mercenary organization in the world, behind Wagner, Blackwater and the French Foreign Legion.

Rumor has it the $C punter missed the plane and they got some frat boy out of the stands with a minute left to go.

The new offense seems to be a reflection of trying to get the most out of the cards we've been dealt.  Unfortunately the D is also.

I hope Smith heals up quickly, and that McKee stays healthy.

Let's face it. Stanford was blown off the field, as I predicted. USC was much faster, better prepared, and more unpredictable than SU. Smith is not that fast and he needs better hands to hold onto the ball. Our team speed is not even close to being in the same league as theirs. We may win 4 or 5 games this year, but that's about it. What's all the fuss about Kelly? He was left in the dust by the USC receiver. That INT in the endzone is attributable to genius Shaw. If we know that he's going to throw to the tight end, then USC knows it and their D will act accordingly and did. McKee is not in the same class as the USC qb on running. In short, SU is in for another mediocre year. I know, Shaw, they didn't "execute."

The defense was as bad as I feared it would be, and the offense wasn't nearly as good as I had at least hoped it would be.
I agree we are looking at maybe 4-5 wins this year.

Exactly.  Fair or unfair, it lessons the meaning of the rivalry when so many players for USC are not really attached to their own school.   It makes you wonder "Who are we playing?  Is this a team representing USC, or are we playing Riley's Raiders?"

RE: Stanford vs USC Game Thread - lex24 - 09-11-2022

The defense is awful. The offense is capable of being very good . (McKee did not have a good half. He will have better days).  That’s my take.  But/for a questionable reversal (bottom line, if it takes over 5 minutes to figure it out it is inconclusive, almost by definition) and a fumble inside the 3, (fumbles are a major issue so far) Stanford would have come out of the first half down 7.  They still lose. Cause the couldn’t come close to slowing SC down. But the first half was a bit more competitive than the score indicated. (I can’t comment on second half. Didn’t get opportunity to see it).

Don’t have the slightest idea how many games they will win. Tough to prevail with a lousy defense.  But for all those that wanted a big change in the offense, it’s here.

Defensively there will be the usual weeping and gnashing of teeth relative to the coaching staff.  And I’m not suggesting changes should not have been made. I am suggesting they would not have mattered. They don’t have the personnel.  Not close.  Can’t scheme your way around a major lack of talent.

Fortunately they can correct that next year through the transfer portal. Oh wait….. To say that change puts Stanford at a competitive disadvantage is an understatement. But they have to recruit much better on the defensive side. Particularly up front. I know - duh…….

We’re they every  truly “attached to the school.”

Thought the offense was pretty darned good.  Just shot themselves in the foot repeatedly.  Can’t turn it over 4 times (5 if you consider turnover on downs inside the 5) and have a chance vs a good offensive team.  Particularly when your defense is poor.

I guess you have to decide whether an offense that shoots themselves in the foot repeatedly is a good one. I agree they have the potential to be very good if they can avoid that tendency.

RE: Stanford vs USC Game Thread - martyup - 09-11-2022

I like our new offensive scheme.  We have talented receivers, a great all-purpose RB, an NFL high draft QB, and a respectable O line.  I saw a good mix of pass and run.  I don't recall ever worrying about the play clock running down in this game, which is a first in a long time.

Turnovers really hurt, and we had 4.  Fix that and we're gonna beat some teams this season.
