RE: UCLA live thread - CTcard - 09-26-2021

Might as well bury this here.

[This observation is all a mess as I missed that Helfrich took over Oregon in 2013 - as noted by Embo. Still think there are some interesting parallels here, but the swap isn't with Kelly even though that first Helfrich team had a lot of Kelly in it.]

Interesting observation.
2013 Shaw coached team vs Kelly-successor coached team:
Shaw Team: 274 yds rushing at 4.2 yds/carry; total offense edge = 65 yds; scoring drives of 8:26, 7:23; TOP = 42+ mins
Kelly-successor Team: 62 yds rushing at 2.6 yds/rush; 80% of yds passing; TD drives of 1:21, 2:51.
2021 Shaw coached team vs Kelly coached team:
Shaw Team: 67 yds rushing at 3.0 yds/rush; 81% of yds passing; TD drives of 0:10, 2:06.
Kelly Team: 204 yds rushing at 3.9 yds/carry; total offense edge = 95 yds; scoring drives of 8:00, 6:40; TOP = 37+ mins

Lots of complaints about scheme in this thread. I know that's the standard fan complaint, but there's no scheme that is going to overcome an OL that cannot run or pass block, lack of RBs (notably in pass blocking), a QB badly missing throws (first half), and a defense short of DBs and DLs.
Overall, after recovering from in-game emotions, I'd tend to agree with Kelly. The schemes were about as much as one can do under the circumstances: setting up some big plays because you obviously cannot sustain drives. And on defense selling out against the run - hoping for mistakes in the pass game thus managing 5 drives with punts after no more than one first down.

And Kelly and Shaw clearly like each other. Going back a long way.

--------------
UCLA's game plan.

Some stated UCLA would have run going away had they simply run the ball more.
Hard to see how that would be.
UCLA ran 52 times vs 29 pass attempts. That's 64+% run plays. That's as high a percentage as you're going to see outside of the service academies.
UCLA averaged 8.7 yds/pass attempt, 3.9 yds/rush attempt.
UCLA won the game on a series of key passes: 5 straight completions leading to end of half TD, 75 yd pass to retake lead, two critical third down completions on the final clinching drive.

I didn't see any quit in the team this game. A terrible first half, particularly by the offense, terrible line play, but then a strong comeback.
The defense ran out of steam, and the offense couldn't either stop or overcome the pressure, but it seemed like a team putting up a fight.

The two coaches have fully swapped positions and styles.

Sorry, don't intend to be a wise guy here, but the stats you quote at first are indeed the 2013 Oregon - Stanford matchup.  Mark Helfrich was the coach, not Kelly (who had gone on to Philadelphia).  Although I would suspect that Kelly's stats and philosophies carried over to Helfrich's first year.

Whoops.
You are quite right and I was mistaken.
Good thing I buried it ... as noted.
Will find some way to patch up the post.

RE: UCLA live thread - winflop - 09-26-2021

Some thoughts after a good night's sleep (and a fun round of golf):

- First and foremost, it was awesome to be able to tailgate and watch a live game again! Reminded me how much I missed it
- The Red Zone was awesome. It was announced as the largest student crowd ever (since the stadium was re-done), and they were into the game and loud.
- We lost this game in the trenches. Not the only problem (by far), but our inability to block (run or pass) and our inability to stop their run were the main reasons we lost
- Our thin DB corps was exposed. Too many freshmen/redshirt freshmen had to play and got a baptism by fire
- I'm thankful that DTR can't throw on the run (he's horrible). We'd have lost by at least twice as much if he did
- Damuni needs to be properly coached on how to use the sideline and not overpursue. He got burned on cutbacks at least three times
- Shaw still sucks at clock management, although it should be noted that the Chipster had to call two TOs in the first half to avoid delay penalties while Shaw didn't have to call any. Letting UCLA burn a full play clock without calling a TO on 3rd down is inexcusable. There's not a single scenario in which more time gets burned off the clock.
- Facilities was worse than all of the above COMBINED. Vaccination check tents were understaffed, entry gates were understaffed (metal detectors and ticket readers), ticket readers are slow, WiFi was worse than cellular, and PA was blaring music over the band during timeouts. Didn't try the new automated concession ordering kiosks

RE: UCLA live thread - Goose - 09-26-2021

My experience with the COVID-19 line was good. I was in line 10 minutes or so. They were thorough with me and did check both my COVID-19 VAX certificate and my ID. Naturally, this was at 1415, so I had lots of time. I would suggest that problems 1500 were to be expected. A last minute rush is going to overload just about any system they put in place. If you don't want to endure that, get there earlier. The ticket scanners at gate 10 seemed to work great, and there were lots more metal detectors than they used to have. The number of entry gates is the same, but there are more metal detectors out in front of them. This is a positive change.

I would be much, much happier if you could download your tickets as .pdf files and have that scanned. No different than the "digital Wallet" except Google isn't involved. It is absurd to believe that the current system isn't mandated by some remuneration from Apple/Google. It isn't about technology, it is about money, and that suxks IMHO. That said, the system worked rapidly and fine for me.

The Wifi in section 232 worked great, much better than last year. The music during non-playing time is abysmal, but I don't see that ever changing. Somebody thinks it is a good idea and that it all she wrote.

I agree with the first part of your last paragraph 100%. I hated this music to such a degree - especially the fact they played it between plays - that I haven't returned since. That was in 2017 and I had been a long-time season ticket holder. Because I no longer live in the area, it's not worth my time complaining to the athletic department, though I did a couple times back then. However, if enough fans pushed on the AD hard enough, they would budge. For instance, if enough season ticket holders said they wouldn't renew until the horrific in-game "entertainment" was given the boot, the AD would have no recourse but to put it to a much deserved end.

RE: UCLA live thread - needle - 09-26-2021

I think Yurosek has been a safety blanket for McKee and his absence Saturday reverberated greatly.

Perhaps this game also showed how the team missed a quick WR like Wilson who can be quite springy when needed (helpful in getting open on quick pass plays).

The AD maybe, just maybe a little more open to listening and responding  to the comments/concerns from the fans and season ticket holders now as a result of the fiasco created by attempting to cancel 11 sports.

RE: UCLA live thread - martyup - 09-27-2021

If the AD just had to sit in regular seats rather than watch the game from his cushy insulated skybox, he might be more sympathetic about the loud music.

I see the Cardinal as a 6-6 team this season, and as going to almost the lowest bowl imaginable. Pathetic O line (except against lowly Vanderbilt, which lost to Georgia 62-0) and almost ZERO pass rush, usually with a 3-man line. That is lethal for our secondary.

Doubt it. There are people at the game, apparently many (most?) of them, that are not there for a football game. I suspect the AD is one of them. For them, it is a social event. There are many, probably 50% of the people at the tailgate that i used to frequent that don't even have tickets. Then there are the others who have tickets but don't go into the stadium. Lots of people in the stadium spend their time talking to others, either in their seats of in the mezzanine, not watching the game. Apparently these people enjoy the music, so since they don't care about the game, give them what they want is the AD's model. I have complained for years. At one point, it did have some effect, but now I am pretty sure the determination has been made that the concert is more important than the football.

I recommended to some in our group who could not attend the UCLA game that they bring earplugs to future games just in case it is too noisy for them....

RE: UCLA live thread - Leftcoast - 09-27-2021

I was pleasantly surprised by the vaccination check system - for me it took 10 minutes at "peak" time (30 minutes prior to kick-off).   The line to get in the gate was very long at the gate immediately after the vaccination tents so I walked to the next gate (4?) and there was NO LINE at all.  I was at my seat with 15 minutes to go.

I'd made it through the gauntlet, checking out the Band's pre-game show and was ready for the game to begin!  Sadly my team didn't arrive until the second half.

It was a gorgeous day to watch football. A wonderful afternoon really - sunny without being hot, the crowd was into the game (and it felt crowded in a good way where we sit), no complaints about the music in our seats, and the students were out in force.  It was the first time I'd been at a sporting event in 2 years and it was fun.

One suggestion for those drowned by the music ... have you considered moving lower in the bowl?  I think it's worse near the overhang but really not an issue as you get closer to the field.   (I sit in 115, ~6 rows up from the field).  I don't doubt your concerns, I sat under the overhang near a speaker once due to rain and it was bad.

RE: UCLA live thread - CompSci87 - 09-27-2021

The music was super loud in row Q section 131.

RE: UCLA live thread - Phogge - 09-27-2021

On the Pac Network they did the usual thing, potted up the crowd mics so it was hard to hear the announcers. Second hand audio mixing, second rate camera operating.
