Why? Because we won a game against a really bad team? Because a reversal of a call gave Stanford the game? I missed much of the game because I was having quality time with a teenage daughter, but watched the last quarter or so. Good grief. We are a bad team. Notre Dame is worse. Shaw still needs to be fired or be told to replace most of his staff.
Enjoy your orange slices.
Sorry Stanford spoiled your evening by winning. My condolences.
What?!? Good lord, seriously? I'm glad we won. I hate Notre Dame and their fans. Condolences for what exactly? Having a great time one on one with a teenage daughter for two hours? My evening was fantastic. The views from the top of Mt Diablo with the fog rolling in were spectacular tonight. Sitting in the passenger seat as my permit holding daughter roared through the turns was incredibly more exciting and awe inspiring than, dare I say, Stanford football.
I had a great night. Stanford's win was superfluous.

Kudos to some players:
The whole DL; ND helped them out, but by far their best game of the season.
McGill, Williamson and Fields all with more than one strong tackle
Bonner for mostly shutting down whomever he was marking, and for disruptive tackling
The almost totally makeshift OL for opening a few holes and keeping McKee upright
Hinton for really excellent play in what I think is his first start at LT. He was run over on one crummy run block, but otherwise held up well in both run and pass blocking
Filkins for hanging in and running tough...but he fumbles way too much
McKee for executing the new game plan and taking care of the ball
And for Lance Anderson for some disruptive defensive calls

Seriously, guys, do I have to lock a thread after a
win? The cardinal rule of the Cardboard is no ad hominem.
You're both in timeout. See you in a couple of days.

Sheesh, guys. Who would have thought that a long sought after win, against ND in South Bend on national TV, no less, would have brought out such vitriol towards each other? It's still the convivial conclave, isn't it? I'm sure we're all happy for the players, right?
Feel the love, bros. Feel the love.

The 1990 game in South Bend will always be in my memory, but not because I was there. I was in Arizona, at my father’s funeral. After the service the family was at my mom’s house and my brother came into the house and said to me, “Sit down, and don’t get too excited.” I sat down, but I probably did get too excited. Always nice to beat ND in SB.

A day when Stanford wins at South Bend and USC, Cal, and of course Norte Dame lose is a darn fine Autumn day in my books!

Congratulations to Coach Shaw, Coach Anderson, and to the team for a hard-fought, hard-earned win. The D played great. McGill and Bonner outstanding. Offense was rather mediocre racking up only 16 points and McKee was damned lucky to avoid the goat horns on that fumble call reversal, which could have easily gone ND's way. McKee did pass quite well, however. I liked that inside shovel call to Filkens. Tremaine's hands and Higgens's routes and running are solid. All in all, a good W to break the long FCS losing streak. Let's see if Shaw and Company can put together two or three W's in a row.

Answer to the punt question: If the punt is blocked, the kicker can be hit. He is only protected if the punt is made.
Rouse did not play. Someone referred to his speed. Out with an injury. Hinton played LT.
Don't be surprised if Wilson is out for the remainder of his Stanford career. That looked like a separated shoulder.
Having Kelly back really helped. Better coverage down the field led to the QB holding the ball longer leading to more pressure leading to worse throws. Not that the QB for ND is very good in the first place.

If you're referring to my comment, it was about one of the other punts, not the one that was blocked. ND's #10 shoved our punter from behind after the punt on the play I was looking at. Maybe it was considered too minor a contact to warrant a flag.

I too saw that one. I thought it was actually a pretty good shove and was fundamentally gratuitous. It really had no reason to be. I am pretty sure it would have been called if the officials actually saw it. It was IMHO a dirty play and was made because the ND player was pretty sure nobody was looking.

That was the most of a Stanford football game I have seen since the last win vs. Oregon last year. The only reason I saw any of it was because someone asked me about what happened to Cal yesterday, and I checked the score to see they lost to Colorado. So I checked to see how Stanford fared against Notre Dame, and saw the game had just started. I thought it would have been an afternoon game on NBC, so decided to watch a little, flipping back and forth between Alabama-Tennessee on DVR.
Too many game management and play choices I didn't like, but a win is a win. As someone who didn't think Stanford would win another game this year after pulling defeat from the jaws of victory a week earlier, beating ND in South Bend showed a level of character that should make Stanford Football feel good about itself in a way it has not in a very very long time.
Is it something on which David Shaw can build a return to national relevance? Likely not, but it does show the Stanford Football program might not be completely dead yet, and might even be worth investing in.

Happy for the kids on this team. They went toe-to-toe with a beatable opponent much like themselves
and found a way to win. In the end, that's all that matters. They found a way last night and I hope they can build on it. Again, however, Shaw did nothing to change my mind about his need to step down.

Me this morning: “Stanford football beat Notre Dame!”
My lovely wife: ”Wow, Notre Dame must be really bad this year!”
She does not follow sports at all.

Restating the obvious, neither ND nor Stanford are good football teams. Yesterday, Stanford was better. As is always the case, what Stanford does next week is critical. Shaw said this victory was "a first step". If this step is going to mean anything, it is the direction of the next step that matters. One thing that we all can consider a positive, no matter what our thoughts on other aspects of Stanford football may be, is that this team clearly has not quit.
Hopefully our next encounter with ASU will bear little similarity to the last one. As we saw last Saturday, the "impossible" can happen. This next game should be one of the more "winnable" games on our remaining schedule. Lets hope the team has success. Both teams will be 2-4. ASU will be coming off a bye.

We are one bad defensive play (final TD by ORST) away from being 3-3.
Perhaps we are at the mid-season form that Shaw alluded to earlier in the season. If so, we should be able to beat the SunCancers, Weenies, and Cougs. If we do that, we will have 5 wins and that bad defensive play will have cost us a bowl game.
Do I think we will get to five wins? Sure, why not? It's okay to dream.

I was thinking the same thing this morning: some better D against OSU, and we are even at 3-3. And seeing how the Cougs lost to OSU yesterday and how the Bears fell to the 0-5 Buffs at Folsom, I could easily imagine a few more wins in our future, with a 6-6 season not impossible. We could even take down BYU, who lost to ND. Let's see.

I forgot about BYU. Yes, that could be the 6th win in this post-beating-ND-at-South-Bend dream state. That would be great, however a bowl appearance will likely allow Shaw to keep his job and result in the implosion of the Cardboard. I want our team to win, but I also enjoy participating on the Cardboard. Hmmm . . .

I don't think the Cardboard implodes. Some of the people who participate may have to take a week off to recover from their head exploding, but after that it will return to normal :-). In theory, 8-4 is possible. So is 2-10. Next week tells us a lot about which is most probable. One thing to consider is that in Big Game Wilcox may be coaching for his job. Not sure that helps Kal, but it might. Given Stanford's injury situation we may be starting Patu on the OL by then. He is over 200 lbs so he qualifies. So many unknowns that actually don't involve directly football, let alone the ones that do.

I’m really looking forward to Matt Squeri’s analysis today! Even after a loss they are well worth the read, so even better after a big win.
