i feel sick
the 4th down TD pass by ford was a ridiculously stupid call, while the kal wr pass was a perfect play call, so maybe the football gods decided to weigh in on this one with the botched FG
my biggest takeaway is that this offensive line is just so poor that stanford has no choice but to play its best athlete at qb because anyone else would get physically destroyed. at this point, not going to blame shaw. tt will NEVER be successful unless he fixes this problem.
my next takeway is that the defense played pretty well, and, overall, the young guys in the secondary at least show promise.

I think our left tackle getting injured was big. Seemed like we had a lot more trouble both running and pass protecting after that.

TT was a bad hire (a few good years at Sac State? give me a break), is now a mediocre-or-worse coach, esp as a play-caller, and keeping him on only compounds all this, but there's no way that Muir fires him. He waited at least 3 years too long on Haase after all.
But I save most of my frustration for Muir. Stanford sports really depends on getting rid of that buffoon. He has proved his incompetence over and over. It says everything about the indifference of the Stanford administration that he still has a job.

The Defensive secondary looked YOUNG in the second half.

It seemed to me that both the offense and the defense seemed to run out of gas as the second half progressed. Kal, on the other hand, didn't.

Agree. I believe we also had a safety injured during the game which didn't help either. Our OL isn't good even when we have all our "top" players available. Lose one and things really get dire. Injuries are "part of the game", but they do have effects, more so when you are thin to begin with.

That was the 3rd time in the last 6 years that Stanford has blown a 4th quarter lead to lose Big Game.
In 2019 Cal outscored Stanford 14-3 in the 4th quarter to win.
In 2022 Cal outscored Stanford 21-3 in the 4th quarter to win.
In 2024 Cal outscored Stanford 14-0 in the 4th quarter to win.
Very frustrating and disappointing.

Now on BART.
Stanford played well enough to get several chances to almost seal the deal and ultimately didn’t get any of them. The inability to get to 28-7 or 24-7 after the kickoff turnover was a big miss that just foreshadowed the doom to follow.
I think Michigan in 2024 has demonstrated that Harbaugh magic doesn’t actually extend several years. Those that hate late year Shaw need to accept that he was battling against a tide of trends that are all against Stanford football success.
I don’t think TT is as good as Harbaugh or Shaw but he is better than Stanford’s next hire. That person will take a job with impossible travel, a tenuous spot in a conference certain to fold once courts allow Clemson and FSU to leave, an admissions process ill suited for this new Era, few loyal fans, absolutely no student interest if the team is not battling for CFP and more. So as long as TT is working hard he should be given time.
The 2024 season with 3 or 4 wins is pretty much on par with national experts’ preseason predictions.
The one worry that TT does influence now is HS recruiting. The incoming class is not going to be enough if some jump to the portal.
Still TT’s job is safe for 2+ years. Muir should be at risk but the ACC changes and the ACC viability uncertainty are likely enough to keep him safe too.
Much like how COVID extended Haase’s tenure. The ACC shuffle likely keeps Muir safe for a bit.
It was a decent game and better than the type of big loss that was possible.

ESPN Analytics has SJST (6-5) favored over Stanford by 60% to 40% probability to win.

Why are we stuck in Purgatory at 3-9?
Offensive Line that is not competitive. From 2009-2017, we were.
Defensive secondary.
We seem to get decent (but not 5-star) skill position players.
We are back to #126 in USA on Average Game Scoring Margin at -17.6 average per game.
https://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/stat/average-scoring-margin
Last year we finished #130.
In 2015 (McCaffrey, Rose Bowl), Stanford was #8 at +15 points per game,
finishing ranked #3 in country after thrashing IOWA in Rose Bowl. That was the peak year.
2009 was the big jump up to 21st in USA to +9 points per game, from barely negative in 2008.
Michigan was #1 in Scoring Margin last year. They won the National Championship.

Couldn't agree more. Our coaching STUNK! Nada the last 25 minutes of the game.
I was particularly INFURIATED with the play calls on our drive after they went ahead.
We had plenty of time left, even though we'd burned one of our 3 TOs. But the
longish pass playcalls were absolutely mystifying to me.
By the way, w/ 5:30 left in Q3, we had 4th and 8 at the Cal 18, ahead 21-7. Instead of kicking an easy FG, TT calls for a pass from Conor Weselman to Sam Roush that went incomplete. We could have been ahead 24-7. Instead, having stopped us from scoring anything, they came alive and went on to score the last 17 points. Why in God's name did TT forego those 3 points? I just don't get it. Was the play that he called one that had a high percentage of getting us a first down? Hard for me to see that. Grrrrrgggghhhh.

TT didn't forgo anything. It was a bobbled snap, with the holder's weak attempt at a pass just a desperation play.

Looked to me like it was supposed to be a FG attempt but Weselman mishandled the snap and then tried to improvise.

I feel like if you are going to comment on the game, you should probably actually watch what you comment on. If you had, you would have known that we were going for a field goal, but the snap was mishandled, and Weselman flinged it in Roush’ general direction to avoid being taken down for a big loss.
Tough that a week after our field goal kicking won us the game, it was one (of several) reasons we lost; one missed field goal (to be fair, from about 52 yards) and one botched field goal. Had we made them both we would have won the game.
