I've seen her play with the Cal Stars quite a few times and I'm not sure you'll find a more pure point guard than Talana Lepolo. I was always impressed with her ability to run her team and dictate the pace of the game.

I agree that she looks very competent on offense at PG.  I like that she always has her head up looking for the open fast break pass.  I didn't see any video showing her defensive skills, so that is a question mark.  However, she did average 4.5 steals per game at Corondelet.

RE: WBB: Looking ahead to 22-23 - bl82 - 04-14-2022

Is it possible that Tara may try to use Brooke Demetre as a wing in the same manner she did with Kayla Pederson? Their bodies and games are not that dissimilar and in the context of how our offense has evolved over the course of the past decade or so, we are asking our bigs to play more on the perimeter. Again, defensive quickness on the perimeter may be an issue here, but the matchup problems will be on both ends. Tara needs to find a way to get Brooke and Kiki a lot more time on the court next year and to the extent that more minutes are opening up on the perimeter than down low, it would be helpful for these players to develop a better perimeter game in the off-season.

jamila wideman, candice wiggins started at point as freshman and did quite well. as i recall, milena flores and susan king borchardt did, too.

Milena Flores was playing behind Jamila Wideman her freshman year. But her sophomore year was pretty good...eventually.

RE: WBB: Looking ahead to 22-23 - WBB fan - 04-14-2022

Jamila Wideman started as a freshman, and for my money, she's one of the two best point guards Stanford has ever had (#1, for me, Sonia Henning. No idea if she started as a frosh, before my time since I didn't start following the team until her junior year (1989-90)). And Ros G-O also had starts as a freshman. And don't forget Lili Thompson as example of surprises from lower rated recruits, not rated in the top 100 when she came to Stanford, but wow! was she a great surprise and so good. Just too bad things went sideways with her. At any rate, there definitely is precedent and the possibility of good surprises. Further, in all this discussion of the possibilities, interesting that no one seems to mention Harriel. To me, she's a big question mark since none of us have ever seen her play. But she has a full year of practicing with the team under her belt which means that she's ahead of the rest of the incoming frosh in learning the system. Question is -- how good is she? Could she be our good surprise?

Totally agree, we have had some great ones over the years. But I continue to think Henning was the best of all. In the 1998-90 season, when she was a junior and Azzi a senior, Sonia was the point. Azzi was the shooting guard, though she did occasionally spell Henning.

I'd add another to this list -- Kokenis.

Hoping she and/or Harriel can step in ready to go. I think Jones is good with the ball in her hands after they get into the flow of the offense, but she is not the one to bring the ball up, especially against any kind of pressure. And I would expect savvy opponents to pressure us until we prove we can deal with it.

Thanks for this chart.  I never realized it, but it looks like the post pipeline after Betts (and Iriafen) could be a recruiting priority next year.  We've been spoiled with so many bigs on the roster.

Thompson is missing, Marta was also a starting PG (though not great).

Agreed. Even though I would argue that we will have the best frontcourt in the nation next season (Brink, Prechtel, Belibi, Iriafen, Betts), we shouldn't rest on our laurels as Prechtel & Belibi will be graduating afterwards and Brink and Iriafen will be upperclassmen the following year. With Betts just a freshman next year, we have a little leeway, but definitely getting the next elite post in either the Class of '23 or '24 should be a high priority.

Current Sophs and Jrs have a covid year. Anything is possible
I left Thompson off a very good 2 not a good point.

We are recruiting elite W/F players in '24 (Joyce Edwards, Kendall Dudley) and posts (Blanca Thomas) as well as in '25 (Sienna Betts).  I still remain more worried about recruiting equally elite guards who can create their own shot and get those forward/posts the ball.

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten our (relative) inability to recruit elite guards lately. Except for Kiana, we've had some big misses on guards such as Kiki Rice this season and then Olivia Miles and Sonia Citron last year, who both played well, particularly Miles during their freshmen season for N.D. Going back further, even though she didn't pan out as elite, I think Kyra Lambert had us as a finalist and then we also missed out on Diggins during the Ogwumike years.

I am hoping Nivar, Lepolo and Agara have been under-rated; we might not need them to play at an All-American level, but they have to be consistent enough threats so that opposing teams can't collapse onto our posts.

I agree, was a very good 2. But I was mentioning her in the context of players coming in who are a surprise, far better than their pre-freshman year rep. Thompson wasn't on the highly recruited radar, not on any of the top recruit lists.

what you say is sensible, but may not be true. it was very rare this year for a defense to put their quick point guard on haley as she brought the ball up. defenses pretty much kept their 3 (or 4) on haley as she brought the ball up.

haley's channeling of draymond green mostly worked. again, i agree, it seems like it shouldn't work, but it mostly did.

Well, you forgot to mention Molly GOODENBOUR, the 5'6 junior PG who led Stanford to their 2nd national championship in 1992 and was named MOP of the 1992 Final Four...she was the only Stanford PG to have been part of the 2 Stanford national champion teams in 1990 and 1992...

In a more recent list of 2023 standout national recruits which I saw a few weeks ago (but I forgot where), Nunu AGARA is listed as 6'2 (and I believe this, based on the videos I saw from their HS playoffs this year where she has suddenly grown to essentially play PF/SF on offense and PF/C on defense) and Courtney OGDEN is listed at 6'1.  Given this, AGARA would most likely be a SF/PF and OGDEN a SF during their forthcoming stint at Stanford.
