12 min left in the first half of the other semi 0:0. Clemson better so fat.  The ref though is completely incompetent. I very much hope our game is better.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - Hieronymus - 12-01-2023

Finishes 2-0 Florida St. they took pretty comprehensive control with about 10 min left in the first half.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - Hieronymus - 12-01-2023

Miracle start 1-0 Stanford. Montoya with the chippish shot.

Make it 2-0. Doms with the bomb from deep.

BYU starting to really settle in. The wings are a concern. Montoya struggling defensively. Not big or fast enough to handle the LB. On the other side Kitahata is slower than the RB and Brandt looking a bit shaky.

Mozingo just completely burned Doms. We can’t defend this way for 65 more minutes. We need some possession. Brandt and then Jung killed the last 2 possessions with terrible passes.

Scary BYU shot there off the post. Hanging on for dear life right now. Freakishly like the UNC game except BYU turning it on earlier.

Wolfe on, Jung off and Aikey to MF. I think this is a good sub right now. Jung not physical enough. We haven’t even crossed MF in along time.

Nobody even trying to pass right now. Puck clear after puck clear.

We crossed MF.and almost got countered as a result, good break up by Harvey.

We really miss Williams in a game like this. No counter threat. Montoya now at LF and is literally half the speed of their RB. In general our lack of depth is going to be a growing problem with this much defending.

)$($*$//$. Miracle that wasn’t a BYU goal. Kitahata whiffs completely on a clear. Good D for Grilione. Kitahata worthless right now. Tired?

And goal called back for BYU offside. Living incredibly dangerously right now. Really close call. Probably on honestly.

I hate our short corner there.

Bhuta, the CBs and Harvey were warriors that half.

Dubious offside call indeed.

Go LSJU!

BYU is so much faster overall, not sure how we manage this second half. Need to be more compact and hold some possession, but I don’t see where we have a credible counter attack beyond Aikey and I think she may be all midfield the rest of this game,

Interesting Grilione on to start. Looking for who is out. But both wings struggled and Grilione was decent. Jung is totally lost right now. Aimlessly jogging from place to place. So Harvey is out? That seems like a bad idea.

No idea if that went in for BYU. Our left is being destroyed. Something has to be changed. Think no goal was correct.

Missed opportunity to counter.

Harvey can’t allow that ball up the middle even with the second bad Doms turnover in a row. Dammit Doms show some composure with the ball. Brandt getting too predictable cutting the ball back. BYU is going to jump that soon.

Did I mention BYU is much faster?

Baloney handball. BYU tries the foul the goalie like v UNC on the FK.

Deserved card on BYU. Big pocket pick by Brandt. That was scary.

Campbell needs to not do that. Like v Cal but she got away with it this time.

Both teams looking tired. At least clear to the sides, not straight to the CB.

Move Doms - you need to be available there.

Fortunately, scoring in soccer is hard.

Gee, are we up 2-0 late or down 0-20?

Hieronymus - Hieronymus - 12-01-2023

All right Now! Stanford 2-0. And I will now go have a heart attack.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - BobK - 12-01-2023

We win Stanford wins 2-0

 +++. Absolutely agree!

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - Nobadeer - 12-01-2023

We were down 3-20, in shots.

Luckily 2 of our 3 shots went in and none of BYU's did, other than the goal disallowed for offsides!

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - Madera86 - 12-01-2023

But BYU only had 3 shots on goal. Sounds like they just pulled the trigger at will. Which is what a team does when they are down 2-0 early, no?

Anyway, I've seen enough games where we (both men and women) have thoroughly outshot an opponent only to end up losing. 'Bout time the ball bounced our way.

And Go Card! Congrats on a brobdingnagian win! And on to the finals!

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - magnus - 12-01-2023

I tuned in 7 minutes into the game.   Glad i didn't tune my offense surpressing influence 7 minutes earlier.  =)

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - Hieronymus - 12-01-2023

Soccer is a massively unfair game sometimes. BYU was the better team but, opportunistic finishing, stout defense and some luck with the bad offsides call and 2 posts carried the day. We are a solid team physically, but not that fast overall. And BYU - just wow.

I would very much like to have seen more composure on the ball while we were ahead. We made it very hard on ourselves today. UNC did a better job of getting forward some in a similar situation.

That said, the defending was beyond great today. Wesley and Evans are amazing. Bhuta was almost flawless at RB. The left was scary, but Montoya dropped back so far it was a 541 most of the second half and she plus Brandt just held on together. You Can’t ask for more effort or guts. And overall it is amazing how few cheap goals this team gives up. As others pointed out, in the end BYU had few good looks. A big key was, unlike UnC, we didn’t just let BYU run around the flanks. We also didn’t have any major defensive brain freezes while UNC had several.

On to FSU who is going to present many of the same challenges.

Go Card!

Thanks for the commentary, including the things we did right. :)

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - BobK - 12-01-2023

It seems not much right. Strange we still won. Seems like if we are now playing for the national championship Stanford is pretty darn good

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - oldalum - 12-01-2023

Whatever happens on Monday, this team has had a special season. Watching them the first few games of the season, I did not think we had much of a chance of making the College Cup this year. To be undefeated and in the final is an incredible accomplishment for a team that starts 3 frosh and 4 sophomores, and the first two substitutes off the bench are frosh. The team has come a long way.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - SkiBum80 - 12-01-2023

A tale of 2 games in one
The first 4 min game we looked fabulous and with boundless confidence enough to win the World Cup
The Next 86 min game we were generally outplayed
With some going forward but like we forgot the confidence & forgot how to string together bunch of passes let alone get killer shots on goal
Fortunately our D was gritty & stubborn and given some great luck was just enough up for the task
Here’s hoping in the finals we expand the initial 4 min game to a full 90

I understand the spirit of this comment, but actually I hope we can have another great start and then hang on for a rather ugly win.

I am not so sure Stanford can hang with Florida State for 90 minutes in a back and forth type game.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - oldalum - 12-02-2023

press conference
in the post-match press conference, Ratcliffe makes clear that after going up 2 goals, focusing on defense was a tactical decision based on how dangerous BYU is in transition, citing their speed and offensive skill.
Though it looked like we were being outplayed, the tactic worked, though he would have liked us to have kept the ball more of the time. Florida State poses the same problem, but probably even worse. We'll likely need to do the same if we get ahead of Florida State, but the question on Monday will be, can we score on Florida State? And in a more wide-open game for both sides, can we score before Florida State does?

(BTW, Doms and Wesley are so impressive in the press conference -- great representatives of Stanford)

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer 2023 - Hieronymus - 12-04-2023

Shifting Aikey to MF made it 100% obvious what the up 2-0 plan was. That said I am also sure Ratcliffe wanted more possession in the second half than he got. But the defense is so good it worked. Not many College teams could hold it together so well while under constant pressure. Likely no other team could have pulled that off.

So yes FSU today is the #2 Offense in the country and they will be more athletic than we are, just as was the case vs. BYU. The team needs to stay smart, compact and pick its spots to get forward. Harvey needs to stay in position even when we have the ball. Overall FSU also plays a lot like BYU - high pressure and lots of attacking.

Make no mistake though, FSU is not just athletes. They play smart and are very skilled. Clemson, after losing twice earlier in the season, tried to goon it up a bit. It worked for 35 minutes and then not so much when FSU settled down.

I will be especially interested in watching freshman on freshman with Bhuta vs. Dudley on our right.  Otherwise Echegini in MF was ACC offensive player of the year. Jody Brown and Dudley were first team ACC forwards.  Huff and Nesbith were second team ACC in MF along with the goalie.

I agree scoring first will be a very big deal. FSU’s speed on the counter is scary.
