I'm very unimpressed with TT's offensive decisions. I'll cut him some slack if he wins games. But, at this point he hasn't shown me that he's a winner at Stanford. I supported Shaw long after many on this board gave up on him. I supported him because he won a lot of games and took our team to bowls and Pac-12 championships. Tonight's poor offensive performance had little to do with lack of talent on our team, IMO. What I saw was poor play calling and poor use of our best talents.

I haven't seen that bad of decision making in a long time. Well since Shaw. Inexcusable. Bad play calling, bad decisions. The defense exceeded expectations. The O and the O coaching were awful.

Based on what I saw tonight, we'll be lucky to win 4 games this year. Seriously. The O running game is negligible. How many rushing yards in H2 tonight apart from Daniels scrambles? Any?
The secondard will be shredded without a good pass rush. I didn't see much pressure on Hoover tonight.
Our receivers got no separation from the guys covering them. Ayomano doesn't need it with his athleticism and body, but the others were blanketed by their defenders.
In short, it's going to be a LONG, LONG season, Cardinal fans. I want to see some passion from Troy Taylor. AND MUCH BETTER PLAYCALLING. That last drive deserves a grade of F at best. And that's on Taylor.

Agree with opinions this was terrible play calling by TT
Also unless TCU was underestimated and goes on to be high ranked team, we may not be any better team than last year
All those players of ours a year older and supposedly more experienced and stronger, just didn’t really show it.
Again with disclaimer I’m wrong if TCU is actually an underrated top team.

We are playing in the ACC this year, not last year's loaded Pac-12. We have Cal Poly, San Jose State, Syracuse, and Wake Forest on the schedule, to say nothing of Cal and SMU. Sure, you have to win the first one, but I think it would be inexcusable for this team to not make a bowl (on the schedule rather than our play tonight).

I don't remember many if any games David Shaw gave up a 3+ point lead with under 7 minutes to go in the game (I am sure he did, but it didn't also happen *frequently*). His problem the final three years was not playing well enough in the first 3 quarters, not the fourth. The 'turtle' pejorative existed for a reason, because while not pretty, it won us games.

There’s some games coming we should win
Maybe even win big
But I think there’s 4 I we’ll likely get stomped bad:
Clemson ND VaTech NCState
Hard to win all the games you think you should on paper
So I’ll be surprised if more than 4 win season and even getting 4 is not a sure thing.

On the plus side, TCU's top back only averaged 4.1 yards per carry. Of course, everyone knows that a Sonny Dykes team is going to be much better at passing than running. Overall, I am encouraged by the defensive showing tonight. We knew going in that the Stanford secondary was relatively better than the front seven, but I think we learned tonight that the Stanford secondary will compete and not get manhandled against good receivers/good QB, even if they are going to give up some big plays.
I just don't know if the relative success against the run tonight is more about Stanford's defensive improvement or the opponent's shortcomings...
As far as the offense, the playcalling was hyperbolically aggressive, with Stanford attempting *five* fourth-down conversion attempts and several misdirection/unconventional play calls. The results weren't great, and even when things worked--the 3rd-and-11 running play in the first half that gained a first down--the choices were very questionable to us fans given down, distance and scoreboard.
OTOH, overall I like having an aggressive mindset as a big underdog going into the first game (recall the first play was a deep shot to Ayomanor). I've been as big a critic of TT as anyone, but coaches need some time to learn the hard truths about their team's limitations and how to play to a team's strengths. It is only game one, so I am hopeful that TT will get a better handle on what the team's true strengths are. But, yes, the "win rate" for offensive plays tonight was very disappointing, and TT has to shoulder more of the blame for that in his second season.
ONE MORE THING: Checked the stat sheet, TCU had 10 TFLs tonight. That's the key stat if you really want to worry that TT is in over his head.

People would endlessly complain that Shaw was too conservative; now they are complaining that TT is being too aggressive.
Maybe some day we will find the right mix.

Aggressive is fine by me.
My question is where were the quick throws and underneath receivers. Daniels has to get ball out quicker. Course he has to have someone to throw to.
