Re: Big 10 - winflop - 12-31-2017

Just adds further embarrassment to the CFP cabal who picked Alabama over tOSU. When Clemson destroys them tomorrow night the bias will be in full view.

I'm no tOSU fan but they were absolutely jobbed out of a spot in the playoffs.

Re: Big 10 - stupac2 - 12-31-2017

It's one of the weird outcomes of the Cult of Zero that the strongest conference top-to-bottom is the most likely to get left out, since the "L" column is going to be bigger. That said, OSU probably gets in if they don't get utterly embarrassed by Iowa, even if they lose.

Maybe. The problem is, nobody really knows what the "rules" are. They are what the committee says they are at any given time. Such a system is always going to seem, and probably is, unfair and just plain wrong at times. How many points to you have to lose by in order to get DQed? And to whom? Just about everybody would agree this system is very flawed. Hopefully, we go to 8 teams soon and avoid this mess.

Maybe they should televise the deliberations :) A little sunshine might enlighten, clarify and disinfect.

Re: Big 10 - Goose - 12-31-2017

The heat is really on Michigan to win on Monday. They don't want to be the one who didn't hold up their end  :).

I would watch this! (Well, unless what I see is revolting after a few minutes.) 8)

Going to 8 teams would avoid nothing (except ensure every conference champion made the playoff, at least those who didn't win their CCG by a fluke).  The same murky rules would still be in place*, and Penn State, who was no. 9 in the final rankings this year, would be left out of such a playoff.  No doubt a lot of their fans would howl and scream, wondering why other two-loss teams (and three-loss Auburn) were picked over them.

* In the brief history of the playoff, there is one rule that appears to be consistently followed: Don't lose football games.  The one-loss team has gotten the nod over the two-loss team pretty much universally.

Im surprised ESPN hasnt convinced the NCAA to allow them to broadcast the deliberations  for big bucks. The real time twitter stream reacting to the deliberations itself would be fun. Ok, they'd  have to put the participants behind screens or obscure their faces to protect them but they could figure out something. It would be reality TV at its finest :)

I do understand your point, but the 8 team playoff would solve several important things. Ensuring that all 5 conference champions get in is important. It removes things like tOSU getting left out. The three remaining at-large berths will be a popularity contest, and may sometimes generate controversy. Their main purpose is to allow a team that possibly had a bad day in the conference championship (Alabama) or a Group of 5 team who otherwise has no shot, or a read good independent, like Notre Dame, to have a shot. This is important, even if these teams seldom win the whole thing. A team like Penn State, who didn't even make the conference championship, has nothing to complain about. The criteria are clear. Win you conference championship and you are in. Otherwise, it is luck of the draw. IMHO, that is much better than the present system.

Re: Big 10 - PVTree - 12-31-2017

I'd like to see an 8 team playoff. The 5 conference winners, the best independent or non major conference team (if ranked in the top 10), and the next best 2 or 3 teams (no conference with more than 2).

Re: Big 10 - BostonCard - 12-31-2017

I’d do a six team playoff.  Five P5 conference champions and top G5 team.  The conference championship would thus be like a play-in game.  You don’t win your conference championship?  Tough.  You don’t win your division?  Too bad.  You don’t belong to a conference? Maybe tha would make it a good time to join one.

Cool, but what is the advantage of 6 vs 8? It takes the same time to play it out, and 8 allows teams to not join a conference or lose a conference championship if they are willing to take "luck of the draw" in the remaining 3 positions.

First, I consider forcing teams to join a conference to be a feature, not a bug.  Second, in essence this makes it a twelve team playoff, since the conference championships in function as a third playoff round.  Third, it makes every conference game matter, since (hypothetically) if you lay an egg against Auburn, you don’t get in, even if you are Alabama.  Fourth, it prevents the national championship from featuring two teams from the same conference.  Fifth, it prevents three OMG SEC teams from going to the playoffs.  And sixth, it does give the best two teams a bye, so it reduces the chances a freak win by the eighth seed, or a team that just gets hot during the playoffs.
