Im surprised ESPN hasnt convinced the NCAA to allow them to broadcast the deliberations  for big bucks. The real time twitter stream reacting to the deliberations itself would be fun. Ok, they'd  have to put the participants behind screens or obscure their faces to protect them but they could figure out something. It would be reality TV at its finest :)

I do understand your point, but the 8 team playoff would solve several important things. Ensuring that all 5 conference champions get in is important. It removes things like tOSU getting left out. The three remaining at-large berths will be a popularity contest, and may sometimes generate controversy. Their main purpose is to allow a team that possibly had a bad day in the conference championship (Alabama) or a Group of 5 team who otherwise has no shot, or a read good independent, like Notre Dame, to have a shot. This is important, even if these teams seldom win the whole thing. A team like Penn State, who didn't even make the conference championship, has nothing to complain about. The criteria are clear. Win you conference championship and you are in. Otherwise, it is luck of the draw. IMHO, that is much better than the present system.

First, I consider forcing teams to join a conference to be a feature, not a bug.  Second, in essence this makes it a twelve team playoff, since the conference championships in function as a third playoff round.  Third, it makes every conference game matter, since (hypothetically) if you lay an egg against Auburn, you don’t get in, even if you are Alabama.  Fourth, it prevents the national championship from featuring two teams from the same conference.  Fifth, it prevents three OMG SEC teams from going to the playoffs.  And sixth, it does give the best two teams a bye, so it reduces the chances a freak win by the eighth seed, or a team that just gets hot during the playoffs.
