Stanford - Notre Dame discussion with NDIrish -
NDIrish - 09-17-2018
Hey everyone, coming back from last year. I know you guys have a brobdingnagian game with oregon coming up, but not much talk for Notre Dame/Wake Forest, so figure i'd just jump the gone and get this thread going. Feel free to ignore me till next week (no hard feelings), but if anyone is interested in early conversation, let me know.
Thanks and good luck!

By getting ahead of yourself, I'm going to place a bet on Wake Forest.

Ha, not getting ahead of myself at all, this team has not looked very good the past 2 weeks and could get beat if they don’t straighten up. But I’ve been waiting 3 days to get approval for the wake forest board and the Nd boards are a complete disaster. Absolute garbage, worse then the way they have looked on the field
Just setting up some further conversations.

Welcome. But any thoughts of ND are premature at this stage. We first need to dispatch the Ducks in their own backyard. After this waterfowl has feasted on a trio of cupcakes, they deserve some punishment; and I hope we are in a position to give it.
Then we talk about how you destroyed Wake Forest and what that means for the contest on 29 September.

While you are waiting to post thoughts, speculations and expectations on the TBD Tree vs Fighrish contest, considering reading an earlier season Cardboard thread entitled "Why schedule Notre Dame?"
I would be interested in a
Notre Dame fan's, Honorable Heathen, Distinguished Foreigner thoughts on the rivalry.

Didn't we accord the status of "honorable heathen" to fans of other boards who posted respectfully on the Cardboard?
I know "honorable" and "Notre Dame Fan" is not something we are accustomed to seeing, but NDIrish goes a ways back, and I have always appreciated his (or her) contributions to this board.

NDIrish was already in the Distinguished Foreigner group, but looks like we missed giving that group its own default user title after the changeover to new board software.
I've fixed that now. I used the group name Distinguished Foreigner as title, not Honorable Heathen. I don't remember which one was last used with the old software, though I know it was HH at one time.

How many more head to head recruiting battles is Stanford going to win against ND this year? And what are the standings so far? By my count, it looks like this, but I may be off.
Stanford
- DB Salim Turner Muhammad
- LB Tristan Sinclair
- RB Austin Jones
- OT Walter Rouse
- OLB Aeneas Di Cosmo?
- DE Josh Pakoloa?
Notre Dame
- OG Zeke Corell
- CB K.J. Wallace
- S Kyle Hamilton

ND got RB Kyren Williams, OT Quinn Carroll, and OT Andrew Kristofic.
Stanford thought to be leading for CB Trent McDuffie, and in the running for TE Hudson Henry.

one of my best friends is a bigtime Notre Dame fan, so for me, the Notre Dame game is way bigger than the Oregon game.
i'd say we have a 50% chance of beating Oregon, but i have no idea how we'll do against the Fighting Irish.

Updated head-to-head recruiting data for Class of 2019.
Stanford
- DB Salim Turner Muhammad
- LB Tristan Sinclair
- RB Austin Jones
- OT Walter Rouse
- OLB Aeneas Di Cosmo?
- DE Josh Pakoloa?
- CB Trent McDuffie?
- TE Hunter Henry?
Notre Dame
- OG Zeke Corell
- CB K.J. Wallace
- S Kyle Hamilton
- RB Kyren Williams
- OT Quinn Carroll
- OT Andrew Kristofic
So if these are the head-to-head battles, that would make 14. If these numbers hold, Stanford would lead 8-6 for Class of 2019. Does this competitiveness track to recent historical trends? Hard to believe there is a more fierce recruiting rival for Stanford than Notre Dame.

appreciate it! "His" will do. im good with whatever title i am assigned, doesn't bother me. there is nothing honorable happening on notre dame boards right now, fans are a joke. I hope to live up to the reputation and contribute something useful this year.

its a hard pick, im gonna try and watch the oregon/stanford game before really deciding, but right now i give stanford a slight edge.

i think it sucked for both schools to lose out on st. brown, however, if he is anything like his brother, he will be playing for the nfl only and lack commitment to the team.
id be curious a year by year comparison of kids who legitimately had stanford/nd in their final three. It seems to be pretty common. my first year on this board (hard to believe that was 2014) i was quickly educated on the difference in academic standings between the two schools overall, but in general i think they tend to look for the same kind of athlete.

Alot of interesting opinions in there. (although i think the original post was right that its 7-2 the last 9 years lol). i havent ever really thought about whether or not we should play this game. Although this is a relatively short history (no. 10 on list of most matchups) its been played pretty much every year ive been a fan (born 85). i think its really put out some great games.
I agree with a lot of the pros and cons that were listed. Although, i do think that ND needs this game more than stanford does. As long as ND remains independent, they are going to need games like this to justify their worth. ND also gets a good recruiting boost playing out in California, not much of a boost for stanford to come to south bend. i think for an out of conference opponent, its a good game for stanford. Although, this is all largely assuming both teams stay solid. For this players, i think its a good experience for both teams.
i guess i would say its worth keeping for both teams. For the winning team, its a solid win for your resume, if you lose, it can be a good lost against a "rival". Also for stanford, it doesn't count as a loss against any specific conference, i.e. "well they can't even survive in the XXX conference because they lost to team X." it is largely broadcast as an academic and athletic rival (especially when in SB), and whereas Stanford has a much higher global prestige as far as academics go, i think for an average college football player, it would be comparable. Opportunities at Stanford are greater, but if a player is just looking to please their mom with a good degree and play football, that can be done at both.
Some people had commented on the vacated wins... that is a complete load of bs. I am still stunned that happened. ND self reported, pulled the players from the team, followed every step they were suppose to, and get hit with that? A number of other universities get caught hiding the truth and finding ways to allow players to play and get 0 punishments for far worse crimes.
i know ND gets a lot of crap for remaining independent, but i think they do schedule hard enough to remain that way. I go back and forth on whether or not they need to join a conference, but you can't really say they are taking the easy way out right now, if anything, it is harder. Now, so far this year, Florida state and usc have not panned out to be very good teams, but its hard to argue going into the year that a schedule that sees michigan, stanford, usc, virginia tech, florida state as your tier 1 games and your tier 2 include northwester, vandy, pitt, navy and teir 3 as wake forest, syracuse and ball state as anything but a tough schedule.

Unless FSU is complete dog-doo, Syracuse might move up a tier this year.

ND and Stanford should always play. And Stanford fans should make the trip at least once. Just as they should take in a game at Fenway and Yankee Stadium. For the ultimate fan a trip to the World’s Largset Outdoor Cocktail Party is a must.

He's talking about Florida-Georgia in Jacksonville. Might be a really horrible game this year but the drinking is always superb.

Hey, I'm earning a hat trick!
I got a Southwest Airlines companion pass this year, so I took my 14-year-old to Fenway & Yankee Stadium in August and we're road-tripping to South Bend next week. Do we get bonus points for also catching a game at Wrigley Field on Friday?
FWIW the new Yankee Stadium is like the new Stanford Stadium: well-designed and a good place to watch a game, but sterile in a concrete-and-aluminum type of way. I never saw the old Yankee Stadium which I understand had more soul.
