A highlight from Big Game - OutsiderFan - 12-03-2018

Given I didn't watch the game, it's hard for me to discern who did what in the game, but there was one highlight I saw that really stood out to me, Adebo's almost pick 6.

On that play, here comes RS Frosh Paulson Adebo with the ball in his hands.  Running with him is True Frosh Kendall Williamson. Who are the first guys to greet them near the End Zone? True Frosh Thomas Booker and RS Frosh Gabe Reid.  That was pretty cool.

Here's the play of the game; Adebo's other interception.

That would have been an amazing touchdown catch, if Adebo had been the wide receiver.  Although it didn't lead to much (we fumbled the ball on the very next play), I think it set the tone for the endgame.

I think it's possible Adebo gets Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

He leads the conference in INTs, passes broken up, and defensed.

His numbers will take a big hit next year, but only because opposing QB's will want to have nothing to do with throwing to his side of the field.

For that matter he is second in the nation in passes defensed, tied for second in PBU, and in a many way tie for 13th in INTs.

Indeed, the best DBs typically don't have the biggest numbers on this stat.
Adebo himself had gone somewhat quiet until cal decided he was the guy to test.
[In the four previous games Adebo had 1 PBU and 1 INT, vs cal 2 and 2.]

RE: A highlight from Big Game - Treebound - 12-03-2018

Watching Big Game from the stands and the number of times that Cal threw towards Adebo's side, I couldn't help but think they did a very poor job of scouting our defense.    A number of us knew he was going to be a major contributor, but this was his coming out party!  That one handed pick was one of the best I've seen.  He should get the defensive rookie of the year award and I think will likely leave here as one of our best db's ever.   Can't wait to watch him the next couple of years, let alone in the Sun Bowl.  Clearly the Player of the Big Game (I think Shaw gave him the game ball)!

Not as highlight-worthy as Adebo's INT, Jake Bailey's 84 yard punt flipped the field for Stanford at a key point late in the 3rd quarter. It was the longest in school history.

That's because other teams are smarter than the Weenies and know better than to challenge Adebo Island.

Would have been better as an 83-yard punt.

True. He didn’t apply the proper technique to kill the ball entirely after 80+ yards. ;-)

I suppose I’ll settle in most cases for 64 yards net.

RE: A highlight from Big Game - terry - 12-03-2018

That 84 yard punt broke the school record previously held by Frankie Albert -- 79 yards in 1940. That's a long, long time ago.

My BIL (a Cal alum) was in the stands and says the end zone INT was right in front of him and the ball clearly touched the ground. He still insists the replay videos don't show the right angle. Anyone know of a definitive highlight/replay that shows this?

I mean, the replays clearly show that the ball touched the ground. It's just that that doesn't matter. What matters is if the ball touches the ground and the player loses control. Which Adebo didn't, or at least there was no evidence of it.

The replay indicated (at least to me) that the ball touched the ground. However, the replay did not show that the ball moved when it touched the ground. It’s possible that it moved a bit, because the view wasn’t perfect, but mostly it appeared that Adebo had control and the ball did not move. In the end, the ruling on the field “stood” but could not be fully “confirmed”. From this I inferred that it’s fine for the ball to touch the ground in the course of a catch, if the receiver already had and maintained control throughout - otherwise, it should have been overturned. But I could be wrong in this understanding.

I was particularly surprised they did it so much in the first half with Holder out. Second half it was more a choice of perceived lesser evils.

Confirmed Adebo got the game ball and deservedly so.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if next season is his last on The Farm.

Also a reminder that I am President of the Paulson Adebo Fan Club

Ball touched the ground.  No doubt about that.
Adebo had his hand around the end of the ball.  And demonstrated control of the ball.   He maintained that hand position on the ball throughout the process of the catch, including impact with the ground.

I will say that Adebo did an excellent job of moving his arm and hand in a manner that mitigated the potential impact of the ball bouncing on the ground.  It was hard to know if his arm was moving like that to bring the ball into the body or if his arm was moving like that because that was how the ball bounced on the ground.

The key was the ball did not move, relative to his hand, during the process of the catch.   He had his hand wrapped around the ball while diving to the ground.  He had his hand wrapped around the ball while impacting the ground.  And even had his hand wrapped around that same tip of the ball as he jumped up to his feet.  Proving, at least to me, that the catch and control were established as soon as his had grabbed the tip of the ball.

I suspect if the game had more TV cameras covering the game they might have had a better angle to show his arm and hand bouncing with the ball rather than controlling the ball.

Oh well.  Love fumbled on the very next play giving UCB a fresh set of downs 11 yards closer to the goal line.   It is very unlikely UCB would have gained 11 yards on a play from the line of scrimmage, so they really came out ahead in the two play sequence.

The ball touching the ground was irrelevant.  It was a hell of a catch.

RE: A highlight from Big Game - Phogge - 12-04-2018

Questions about three DB positions next year. Will Buncom and Edwards come back? Who will play the opposite corner? Will Williamson continue in the nickel or go to FS? Who can step up when the inevitable injury occurs? Almost as many at ILB. DL right now looks like a solid unit with three or four freshmen ready to start as sophs.

Outside duo of Reid and Fox and if Toohill returns could be the strength of the D.
