The replay indicated (at least to me) that the ball touched the ground. However, the replay did not show that the ball moved when it touched the ground. It’s possible that it moved a bit, because the view wasn’t perfect, but mostly it appeared that Adebo had control and the ball did not move. In the end, the ruling on the field “stood” but could not be fully “confirmed”. From this I inferred that it’s fine for the ball to touch the ground in the course of a catch, if the receiver already had and maintained control throughout - otherwise, it should have been overturned. But I could be wrong in this understanding.
Ball touched the ground. No doubt about that.
Adebo had his hand around the end of the ball. And demonstrated control of the ball. He maintained that hand position on the ball throughout the process of the catch, including impact with the ground.
I will say that Adebo did an excellent job of moving his arm and hand in a manner that mitigated the potential impact of the ball bouncing on the ground. It was hard to know if his arm was moving like that to bring the ball into the body or if his arm was moving like that because that was how the ball bounced on the ground.
The key was the ball did not move, relative to his hand, during the process of the catch. He had his hand wrapped around the ball while diving to the ground. He had his hand wrapped around the ball while impacting the ground. And even had his hand wrapped around that same tip of the ball as he jumped up to his feet. Proving, at least to me, that the catch and control were established as soon as his had grabbed the tip of the ball.
I suspect if the game had more TV cameras covering the game they might have had a better angle to show his arm and hand bouncing with the ball rather than controlling the ball.
Oh well. Love fumbled on the very next play giving UCB a fresh set of downs 11 yards closer to the goal line. It is very unlikely UCB would have gained 11 yards on a play from the line of scrimmage, so they really came out ahead in the two play sequence.
