K.J. Costello Draft Status - Stanfan1 - 01-04-2019

K.J. Costello is projected to be 5-7 round draft pick and rated the 10th best college quarterback in the NFL draft. I hope he makes the right decision and stays one more year at Stanford.

If he goes I can’t wait for the apologist lines coming out of the football office and the SID if they have hired an SID. I can only cringe at the thought of Richardson taking on SC at the Coliseum in September. Better to start a true freshman five star but wait a minute............

Shaw is perfectly happy with Mills and West.

Then he is a fool.

Outsider is an outsider

Mills knee is a concern. His ability is not

Terrible scouting report. This report is all positive. It doesn't list any true negative such as his decision-making.

As much as I wish I disagreed, +1. He's not ready for the league yet.

I read it as a series of back-handed compliments.  "If given a clean pocket..."; could have success "with the right coaching and time"

Well they all can watch Butterfield win the Voldemort at some other place.

Phogge is Butterfields agent..... BTW, couldn’t agree more that Shaw needs to recruit more QB’s. This guy is a legacy in his backyard. Not offering makes no friggin sense.

Why do we call it the Voldemort?

I assume it is because he has Tanner McKee coming in in that class. Yes, McKee could opt out, but he probably won't. It may not make any sense to Cardboarders but it does to Shaw, and he is the only one whose vote counts.

Shaw said he expects Mills to be full go in Spring. And wasn't there something posted here a month ago that said his injury this year wasn't the same knee as the H.S. injury and that it wasn't as bad as originally feared?

Shaw said the latest injury wasn't as bad as feared. Of course, since we don't know how bad it was originally feared to be that doesn't really tell us much. To my knowledge, it hasn't been disclosed whether it was the same or the other knee.
The problem is that since his first knee injury before his senior year of HS, he has now had three more, all of which have kept him out of action for long periods of time. His latest was after he had been in the UC Davis game (his first game) for all of about 4-5 plays.
I'm sure we all hope his knee problems are behind him. However, given what has happened over the last 2 1/2 years it is difficult to be confident of that.

RE: K.J. Costello Draft Status - OutsiderFan - 01-05-2019

What exactly is the Mills injury history?

IIRC, he had a pretty minor injury that kept him out of a few games in his Senior season.  Then, in the last game of his Senior season, that I saw live on line in the Georgia state championship game, he suffered the bad one.

He suffered a "set-back" in his recovery at Stanford in 2017, then had a less minor injury in September 2018.

Anyone have any other insight here?  Both knees? Same knee? Type of injuries?

RE: K.J. Costello Draft Status - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 01-05-2019

My guess is the two primary challenges (from an NFL perspective) are KJ's relatively slow release throwing motion and his slow mobility within the backfield.
On the positive side, I expect NFL team's will like KJ's physical size, arm strength, and good attitude.

Actually the first injury was supposed to be the bad one, which was supposed to keep him out for most of his senior season, but he recovered more quickly than expected and played most of it.
After the injury in the state championship game, Mills was quoted as saying he could have gone back in, but was held out for precautionary purposes. From what I understand, though, he still wasn't able to go when fall practice started at Stanford. Not sure when he was actually able to start practicing. How serious the "setback" Shaw said he had was never disclosed.
As is typical of injuries to Stanford players, we haven't been given much information. Some people seem to think the injuries were ACL problems, but to the best of my knowledge this has never been actually disclosed.

After Stanford players came in second so many times, and some got tired of hearing about it, it became the trophy whose name must not be spoken. For a while the board censored the name to a blank space. Later it became Voldemort after the Harry Potter character whose name must not be spoken.

Agree with all, with 1 more primary challenge: decision-making. See the read option fumble TD (Scarlett would've walked in) and multiple Chryst-esque throws into triple coverage in the Sun Bowl, and the 4th down dump-off to a double-covered Love 3 yards behind the sticks vs. Wazzu (IIRC).

RE: K.J. Costello Draft Status - Mick - 01-05-2019

Two possible factors are that supposedly (a) there is a dearth of strong quarterbacks coming out of college this year, but lots of strong quarterbacks in the 2020 draft (Herbert, Tagovailoa, Fromm).  Heard that on KNBR.  Have no idea whether it's meaningful.  And (b) since five quarterbacks were taken in last year's first round, it is likelier that a good team will take a chance on Costello than a bad team.
