Stanford graduation cancellation tweets - donkey687 - 03-20-2020

I feel for the seniors who worked hard to get their degrees and are missing out on graduation.  A couple revealing tweets from two of our grad transfers on their reaction and to their feelings of their time at Stanford.

Comments on Stanford being hell and almost dying gives some insight on what a grind Stanford can be athletically and academically and why these players are making lateral moves to play football elsewhere next season.  As a fan and grad, I wish Stanford was all roses all the time for everyone but it is very demanding and no walk in the park.

Traditional commencement was cancelled, not graduation. Hopefully, everybody will be able to look back and appreciate the sacrifices that are being made now. The athletes who turn pro still have a great future, albeit somewhat more uncertain.

I'm sorry but Hamilton's reaction really rubs me the wrong way. It comes across as if he's entitled to a graduation ceremony because of what he went through, and that it's somehow more important than what the world is dealing with right now.

I hope that wasn't his intention, but if it was then he needs to get some serious perspective adjustment.

Twitter is a way to blow off steam. I seriously doubt he actually thinks his graduation is more important than a pandemic.

He graduated. He wants to walk with his classmates who are graduating. Missing out on a tradition sucks. That's all this is.

By the way, Simi Fehoko's wedding got postponed too. Should he as well not complain about it?

In a public forum? Probably not.

I guess maybe it is good to be older. You may forget some of the difficult times you had at Stanford. I was certainly not an athlete during my years at Stanford, so I can't claim to have a similar experience. However, even as I was leaving Stanford I could recognize how much I had enjoyed my time there, and how important it was to my life. Hard to imagine calling any of even the bad times hell, although they weren't fun. Yes, it is a bummer for these guys not to get a graduation event. It would have been much worse to not have been there at all.

My son was also planning to walk in May at his graduation, and he went through Hell at times too. But he's mature enough to not bitch about it, and certainly not in a public forum.

He's a senior, not a freshman. He should know better.

I don't know if everyone received the letter from MTL today. It's kind of long and I don't know where it is online. (Edit: here it is:
https://healthalerts.stanford.edu/2020/03/20/message-from-the-president/

Here's an excerpt:

Quote:Yesterday, we announced that spring quarter courses will be taught online for the duration of the quarter. I know that this news has come as a significant disappointment to all, and especially to our students. I deeply regret that many of you will not be living and studying on campus this spring. Unfortunately, it became clear that this was the only responsible course of action, considering the global public health challenge in front of us and the possibility that shelter-in-place guidelines will be extended. But I truly wish it were otherwise.

To those of you in the class of 2020, graduating this spring: I know many of you must be heartbroken to spend your final quarter away from Stanford and that we will not be able to hold our traditional Commencement ceremony in June. This is not how you expected—and not how any of us expected—you would complete your Stanford degrees. All of us at Stanford are incredibly proud of you, and of the resilience and ingenuity of our entire student body, which has been so evident in the midst of this crisis. We are committed to celebrating you and your tremendous accomplishments together on campus. At this point, we do not know what the timing or the format will be, but we are working to make this gathering a fitting recognition, in spite of the upheaval. I thank you for your patience while we work through these issues. We will reach out directly to graduating students and their families as soon as we have information to share.

Remote learning is new for many of our students. And while I understand that you may be uncertain about how the experience will unfold, I am heartened by the work our faculty is doing to ensure the best possible remote learning experience for all of our students. Since remote learning was announced, faculty members have been focused on using this opportunity to rethink and advance online learning, leveraging technology to make this a rich learning experience in all disciplines.

I’ll remind you of your duty not to bitch about disappointing things in a public forum the next time Shaw’s offense has a disappointing day and the football team loses.

Well-played, but lacking context of the current situation - much like Hamilton's tweet.
