Bryce getting a lot of Love in Washington -
CardinalSagehen - 08-23-2020
Bryce started feeling like himself again around February, as he continued his rehab alongside Alex Smith. Now he’s in camp and apparently turning heads. The coaching staff has made many glowing remarks about him. He’s also taking reps with the first team when Adrian Peterson rests.
It would be great to see Bryce stay healthy and show flashes of the electrifying speed, talent and heart that we witnessed at Stanford. He’s also such a positive, humble, uplifting guy - the kind of person you really want to root for. Let’s also not forget that he (a) returned for his final year, (b) endured pain for the team to insane degrees, and © lost draft placement and probably a few million dollars because he was trying to score to beat Cal.
If the NFL pulls off its 2020 season, from my perspective, this will be one of the most interesting stories and players to watch.

Terry Allen. Garrison Hearst. Willis McGhehee. Frank Gore. These are some of the names of NFL RBs who had good to HOF careers after significant knee injuries before playing in the NFL. There are of course others who weren't as fortunate, but I wouldn't ever rule out Bryce Love returning to something resembling his Stanford form.

Good point OF. Frank Gore is a Warrior.

With Guice out in Washington that's one less competitor for the RB spot, though still a way to go behind Peterson and a bunch of others.

Gore had surgery on
both knees, and was still a third round pick.

On that point, some of the articles say that Love is getting the reps with the first-team when Adrian Peterson is out. Fantasy Football sites are onto this, too. They're suggesting Love as a bargain and a "sleeper pick".

Interesting. Though, and I say this as a lifelong WFT fan, they will find a way to screw this up and maim him.

Yep. Let's normalize that acronym. Much better.
Love has to do more than turn heads...he's actually got to earn some carries. Hopefully he's taking all possible preseason precautions with his knees and ankles.

Well, they are no longer the Potomac Drainage Basin Indigenous Persons (h/t Gregg Easterbrook), and pending a new name, WFT sounds apropos.

Given the number of bone-headed choices the franchise has made over the years, I personally think WTF would be the more appropriate acronym...

Yup. Three horrible years in a row.
Think they'll make the playoffs this year?

What made Rose Bowlers Stepfan Taylor and Tyler Gaffney special wasn't so much what they did in individual games but their durability. Something that eluded Love. Sad, yes, but the young man has a rich future with or without football. We can only imagine what he might have done those seasons that were cut short. He's not built for this game.

He should be getting some remote consultation from Turley, if I had any recommendations. There are athletes who have suffered early injuries who have gone on to do great things.

Fair point - I hope it turns out to be wrong in the end, but fair point. Despite injuries, Bryce still put up fantastic career numbers and made up for it with toughness.
The biggest obstacle to Bryce's total ownership of the career record book was not injuries, but Christian McCaffrey. Had Bryce been RB #1 in 2016, and had he stayed even partly healthy that year, he would own almost all the Stanford career rushing records. He only needed another ~450 yards to top Stepfan's career rushing yards record.
Bryce's Resume:
1st - Career yards per attempt (6.79)
4th - Career yards (3,866), behind Stepfan, Darrin, and CMac, but ahead of Toby and Tyler
4th - Career 100-yard games (16)
5th - Career touchdowns (30)
1st - Season yards (2,118)
1st - Season 100-yard games (12)
1st - Consecutive 100-yard games (9)
1st - Season yards per attempt, modern era, excluding Andrew Luck (8.05)
1st - Game yards (301); and 3rd (263)

Frank Gore is fricking amazing. I hate to think what he’s going to feel like physically in 10 years. But he’s had an incredible career.

Love’s ankle injury, iirc, occurred about 2/3rd into his ‘17 season. Yet he kept playing. He was plenty durable prior - and a terrific inside runner. He should have been sat to let it heal. I think the medical staff let him down. I don’t think he will be a 20 touch a game guy. But he certainly can be effective as part of a RB tandem. Look at what the Niners do with their backs. Love could thrive in a similar system.
