OT Garrapolo - lex24 - 09-13-2020

vastly overrated.  No pocket presence. Can’t move.  Doesn’t make plays. Slightly above average QB.  At best. Niner defense has been fantastic.  But they’ve been on the field most of the second and third quarter chasing Murray around their tongues are going to be on the ground by the fourth quarter

Has an easy TD on last drive.  Badly underthrows.  Ugh.

1.  Agree re: Jimmy G.  He is an above average QB with mediocre feet;

2.  Don't want to undermine Arizona's win today because Murray was (obviously) the difference in the game.  BUT, once again, Kyle Shanahan blows a game and no one calls him on it (at least that I have heard in post-game chatter).  It happened at the end of the 1H.  You have two timeouts left and something like a minute left on the clock.  You are deep in AZ's territory.  You have to run the ball there.  Burn clock or at least make AZ burn a timeout or two (all they had).  Nope.  Dude is in love with his pass play schemes and that ego once again reared its ugly head to overcome the smart play (see first Seahawks game last year in OT; also think he blew the 2nd and 5 call in the Super Bowl in Q4 - run the ball there . . . 3 times if necessary).  But instead, Shanahan reverts to passes; incomplete; stopped clock; After the 'Niners' Chippie FG, AZ has just enough time to get into long FG range (burning both timeouts in the process) and score 3 points.  NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED!  It's so freaking basic; yet this guy has a blind spot for EOG and EOH clock management.  He really needs a sanity check guy on the headsets.

3.  In one sense, it's easy to see why Shanahan loves him some Shanahan.  That first TD pass to Mostert was a thing of beauty in concept and execution.  Worked perfectly.

4.  The penalties just killed the 'Niners in the 2H, and the PI call was poor, and I didn't like the late hit call, either.

RE: OT Garrapolo - BobK - 09-13-2020

The defense was terrible. Absolutely terrible.
Not finding Kittle poor

RE: OT Garrapolo - old spanish trail - 09-13-2020

He looked jittery/nervous. I'm chalking it up to having no go to receivers. How did Arizona get Hopkins to go with Larry Fitzgerald? Plus, his mobility suffers in comparison to Murray.

Niner top two wr are Samuel (out for four weeks), and Ayuik (hamstring). Hope they are right about the latter because they passed over more than 3 terrific receivers to take him. He still had Kittle, but then his knee is hyperextended. Ouch. Trent Taylor is "gritty" but he's tiny , and he's no Amendoula. Bourne plays as well as he can and he's improved over the years, but he's not a #1 receiver. Pettis disappeared as usual.

Wait, are you suggesting he should have turtled like Shaw?

Depending on how long you've been off the Bootleg, you might know that my complaint with Shaw is not turtling, per se; but rather, a terrible offensive scheme combined with utter lack of game awareness in too many instances to be called the inevitable, once-in-a-blue-moon, screw up.  HCs must give their teams the best chance to win, and what that means varies game by game (of course).  I still think the WORST of Shaw's extensive list of really bad in-game decisions came at Utah many years ago.  In that EOG situation, it was 100% plain to anyone watching the game that Stanford should have pounded the ball into the end zone for the winning score from the 2 yard line (think they even gained 6 yards on their last running play).  instead, it was INC, INC, game over (and that one may have cost Stanford a CFB playoff).

So no, it's not turtling that is the problem with Shaw (though it is A problem for Shaw).  Nor is it always running the ball when he should throw; in fact, it is often throwing when he should run.  And in this last example, Shanahan has shown signs of suffering from the same cluelessness.  But Shanahan is given a WAY longer leash because of all the other brilliant things he does on O.  And while I understand that, the media should still call him out on obvious mistakes - or at least question what his thinking was.  The end of 1H today was (yet another) example of Shanahan not thinking clearly, imo.

RE: OT Garrapolo - OutsiderFan - 09-14-2020

1. Allowed blocked punt
2. Couldn't punch in from less than a yard on 4th down
3. Absurd roughing penalty on Niners DL on Murray*
4. Holding penalty on 3rd and 15 at Cards 10

Those are all back breaking mistakes in a close game.

I had a very bad feeling that with Samuel and Aiyuk out, the Niners would struggle to win, and might lose as a result. But they also missed Center Ben Garland. Then Kittle got dinged (my guess is knee bruise just like last year against Cardinals) and wasn't the same again.

Garoppolo would be fine with Larry Fitzgerald and DeAndre Hopkins.  Instead he had Kendrick Bourne and Trent Taylor. That said, Garoppolo definitely threw to Bourne too late on the penultimate Niners offensive snap.

* The late hit on Murray was bullshit. He dove forward, which isn't a slide that dictates he can't any longer be touched. Any ball carrier who falls down forward is still a live ball carrier until hit, unless the NFL has changed its rules and I am unaware of it.

Garoppolo has one of the  great offensive minds in football as his HC.  Shanahan is great at finding positive matchups.

I’m waiting for him to actually make a play when things break down.  He has awful feet.  Poor pocket presence (on one played he twirled around in the pocket doing circles. They should have played the Three Stooges music in the background.  On the last drive- he had an easy TD pass to Bourne.  Throws a floater and badly underthrows him. Bourne had plenty of room in the end zone.  That pass can’t be underthrown. If you miss, you miss long - no one else but the receiver should have a chance.

His wideout corps was weak yesterday- Pettis is a complete bust.  But he had plenty of weapons with his backs and TE’s.  Particularly the way Shanahan schemes.

When he can sit back and pick out an open receiver he’s fine.  But he doesn’t create. At all.  And in today’s NFL, unless you are Drew Brees, you need to be able to create. Worse, he shows no mobility.   Even a guy like Brees – who can’t run a lick - is good at sliding within the pocket, buying time, and finding an area in which he can get rid of the ball. Garoppolo just stands there like a statue most the time .

By the end of this year, there willl be talk about change at QB.  I don’t know when the next contractual out is.  But he isn’t worth what he’s being paid.

I truly thought he was the difference yesterday. They’re being a brobdingnagian difference in quarterback play. Murray was inconsistent, but with his running he is dynamic. And Bob K I disagree with you regarding the 49er defense. I thought they played very well For about 2 1/2 quarters. And then just completely ran out of gas. I don’t know what the time of possession was but I have to believe it favor to Arizona tremendously. And when you have to chase around that guy all day you’re gonna be tired at the end of the day. Particularly with the air quality the way it was and on the first game of the season

EDIT: TOP close. But Arizona ran 78 plays. Niners 61.

Hey, my granddaughters love Garoppolo! But what do they know, they are only 3 1/2.

RE: OT Garrapolo - OutsiderFan - 09-14-2020

Garoppolo can be cut today and the Niners only take a total of $4.2M in cap hit over the next two seasons. That's really nothing for a QB.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/jimmy-garoppolo-14472/

You'll notice the deal the Niners gave him was heavily front-loaded, because they were not sold on him to be the long term answer at QB. So they paid him big money when they had the cap space, and basically put him on a year-to-year deal from 2020-2022. Garoppolo has to play well to get another big contract if he wants one.

Damn weak QB takes us to the Super Bowl. And now some want him gone.

He did.  And then he blew up in the 4th Q.

Question that I believe he has to answer this year is whether he be the guy that makes plays at key times. Specially when things break down.

I’m not saying I want him gone. But I am saying  that if he performs this season like he did yesterday and in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl there will be cries for him to be gone. You can count on that.

Hopefully that will not be the case, he will pick it up, be “the guy” and make plays.  And you all can then use this post to show me what an idiot I am!

RE: OT Garrapolo - Mick - 09-14-2020

Garoppolo is a different quarterback since he's returned from the ACL injury.  I suspect he's still really feeling it in his legs.  He was never a truly mobile quarterback, but today he's a statue, with more than a little Jim Everett in him.  No pocket presence, hears feet, can't really throw deep or to the sidelines.  Unbelievably overrated since he came back from the injury.  Pre-injury, I thought he was less experienced but a more capable QB.  Now, his ceiling is incredibly low.  And in games when the Niners are forced to move away from the run, it really shows.

BTW, after one game, Garoppolo is the #10 rated passer in the NFL. Sounds about right.

Late hit call was ridiculous.  Murray forced it with his whining-like-a-teenage-girl, Euro-soccer-complainer antics.

Finally, Shanahan should have tried a field goal on his first punt. Yes, it would have been a 55 yarder. Still should have tried it.

Agree completely on JG.

As to the “late hit” - those should be reviewable.  The defender was already in the act of to making the tackle when Murray was upright.   What he supposed to do stop himself. First I think it’s physically almost impossible. Second the only way he might be able to do so is to risk ripping out both his knees. Course they don’t care about that they just want to protect the quarterbacks because that’s where the money is for the league.

The only way for him to have avoided that was to make the assumption that Murray was going to hit the ground. Which of course you can’t do because you have guys running all over the place. Frankly the sliding rule down field in my opinion is freaking BS. Once they get past the line of scrimmage they Should be treated like running back’s. Obviously when they slide you can’t go in headfirst that’s a penalty. But I don’t have a problem with somebody landing on him. Because these guys make brobdingnagian plays running and it’s damn near impossible for a defender to actually know if the guy is going to slide or not. Most the time they do that but sometimes they don’t and then it’s a brobdingnagian play.  If it’s behind a line of scrimmage and just hits the deck that’s different. Murray did that a lot of times yesterday.

They have to give something to the defense in this game. Right now it’s ridiculous it’s like arena football. And frankly to me it really is nowhere near as enjoyable to watch

RE: OT Garrapolo - OutsiderFan - 09-14-2020

I agree with the assessment that Jimmy G has never been the same since his ACL tear. This is pre-injury Garoppolo:

Murray and Jackson will get hurt. Only a matter of time.

I watched a bit of Jackson playing yesterday and "he's going to get hurt and not last long" if he keeps on running like this.

Murray does a much better job of avoiding hits.

You can avoid 99 hits and then the 100th bites you in the gusitza. Ask Griffen.

and Bobbbb is so correct that he had to post it twice.
