OT: class of 2024 admit rate goes up -

Quote:Stanford admit rate rises to 5.19% [from 4.34%], 378 students defer enrollment
The 5.19% admit rate accounts for students admitted through restrictive early action, regular decision and the waitlist. Even after Stanford dipped into the waitlist to admit applicants, only 1,607 admitted first-year students enrolled this year, down from the target undergraduate class size of 1,730.
...
Around 20% of first-year students admitted in December and March opted to defer enrollment instead of matriculating this academic year

I expected the admit rate to inch up. According to Harvard's reported numbers we are now the second most selective college in the country.

I imagine the lack of security that the country felt may have resulted in some parents really pressuring their kids to choose Harvard over Stanford in a cross-admit scenario. I'd love to see how many people chose to stay closer to home, as well.
I also imagine that Harvard retained a higher percentage of their overseas applicants relative to Stanford.

I wonder if next year's admit rate will be a lot lower given the 378 deferrals, most who presumably enroll next year.

For sure. And given the number who deferred at Yale with their smaller class size maybe they'll take the admissions rate lead.

Maybe not, since there will be a four-year hole from the students who deferred if next year's class is smaller. If you had admit a normal size class next year, you'd be fine the next three years, and only have too many people in three years, when the freshman class are seniors.

A friend in the admissions office told me that the current plan is to admit the same number of students next year and find some way to house the extra kids who deferred this year.

Sounds like upperclass students are getting bumped to Sharon Green or what not...if the next academic year's pandemic situation allows for more on-campus student presence.
If the Overseas Study Program were up and running (and there's no guarantee of that), they could have just opened and filled more overseas slots somehow.

what would make sense to me would be to target 3,460 enrollees between the two classes to maintain the overall size of the undergrad population.
given this year had 1,607 enrollees and next year has 378 deferrals already I would target 1,475 new enrollees (if all frosh then that class would be 1,853 students). Maybe they will take 100 transfers out of the 1,475 new enrollees next year to make the class of 2025 more normal in size and add some members to the class of '24 and '23.
