MBB: Stanford vs Texas in Las Vegas, Sunday @ Noon, ABC - Papa John - 12-17-2021

The Stanford men have their first game on major network TV this Sunday at T-Mobile Arena versus the #17 Texas Longhorns. The game is part of the Pac-12 Coast-to-Coast Challenge, which includes a women's game in the nightcap that features Arizona versus the Texas Longhorns.

The Stanford men have yet to win away from Maples Pavilion and have yet to defeat a Quad 1 or 2 team. They'll get their chance versus a Texas team (NET ranking of 21) that is 7-2, but has yet to win on the road. Texas was picked to finish second in the Big 12 behind Kansas and just ahead of the same Baylor team that embarrassed Stanford a few weeks ago. Texas' losses were at ranked Gonzaga and Seton Hall, so no shame there. But their best win is against Quad 3 Northern Colorado (NET 124). Stanford (NET 138) also has a single Quad 3 win, over Oregon (NET 102).

That's the good news. The bad news is that Texas was competitive against Gonzaga and Seton Hall. Stanford was competitive against Colorado, not so much against Santa Clara, and not at all starting in the second half against Baylor. Texas hasn't been scoring a ton of points, only a 73 ppg average. But their defense has held opponents to 54 ppg. The stat that stands out to me is that Texas has committed 95 TOs in 9 games while their opponents have committed 158.

I haven't spent any time on the UT Austin campus, but I've been to Austin and the Congress Avenue Bridge over the Colorado River is an awesome place for bat watching at sunset. And the 6th Street music scene is not too shabby. And I toured the state capitol and can name the six flags that have flown over Texas.

Walton?!!?

Why?

Ugh...

The one thing this team -- Stanford, I mean -- can do well is rebound.  If we can turn this into a volleyball contest then we just might have a shot.

Well, we are hanging in there with them in the first half.
Of course we did in the first half against Baylor too.

Yet another bullish-t charging call.  Recently, I heard Jay Bilas in a broadcast say that NCAA referees hand out charging calls like Halloween candy and it has to change.  So correct.  On the last call the defender retreats, is late to the spot and leans his body to boot. And they still call a charge. It’s absurd. Because for one thing it’s not good defense and should not be rewarded.

I'm starting to see why Walton gets on posters' nerves here.  Everybody is "fantastic" or "tremendous."  My favorite was when he described the "crowd" as "irate" on the offensive foul near the end of the half.  Yeah, we all agree that was a chump call, but "the crowd irate?"  Really?  Maybe if this game were in Palo Alto but come on Bill, look around you and tell me how many Stanford fans you see at the game.  There can't be more than what, 60?

I always thought people's problems with Walton were his tendency to pontificate and get off topic. I mean does anyone care about his experiences when he was backpacking in the Himalayas?

Agreed. He sounds like David Shaw when Shaw says "phenomenal" in every other sentence. Pritchard has adopted that term to describe virtually everything he likes too.

More bogus offensive foul calls are not helping our cause. Neither is missing bunnies.

Succinct. Accurate.

Turn the sound down on your tv. Listen to the Stanford broadcast.

People have multiple problems with Walton. Being uninterested in the game and yakking endlessly off topic is one. Exaggerating wildly on how good/bad whoever or whatever is is secondary but also annoying.

Eerily similar to the WBB game yesterday. First 10 minutes of the second half, could not score. Sadly, different outcome. At least they got over 50 points — Stanford announcers pointed out that TX had held opponents under 50 in five games. Two under 40.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs Texas in Las Vegas, Sunday @ Noon, ABC - Sam Leopold - 12-19-2021

A rather deceptive final score.  Sportswriters who didn't watch the game are going to look at that score and think Stanford was in this.

I'm hoping one of two things comes out of this season -- either Haase manages to get his team to catch fire and go bananas, and they miraculously appear in the tourney, or they tank, and we go into next season with a better coach.  Haase, bless him, has stacked the roster with enough talent that if we bring in a new coach the cupboard would be by no means bare for him.

If that talent stays, which with the transfer portal is by no means a given. Of course, it isn't a given if Haase is retained either.

I say commit to giving Reynaud starter's minutes. Some sweet shooting from him in garbage time.

I have yet to see any compelling evidence of good coaching by Haase. ANY.

I see us finishing around .500 or slightly below on the season. We will get some Pac12 wins because they are some equally bad Pac12 teams. Without a little luck on our side, we would have loses to Dartmouth and Oregon and be 4-6 right now. Although I think we will get better as the season progresses, I don't see this team in the NCAA tournament. Men's basketball fan support is very apathetic and understandably so.

Historically, Haase’s teams have not given me a lot of reason to agree with the first statement.  If anything, his teams really seem to fade down the stretch.
