WBB: Stanford 87 -- Oregon State 63 - 81alum - 02-15-2022

Preview:

In our last road trip of the regular season we head to Oregon State and Oregon.

We defeated Oregon State at home 82-59 just over a week ago.  The write-up is here:

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=22934&highlight=wbb

In that game OSU led 22-25 after the first quarter, but then we buckled down for the final three quarters.

Since our game Oregon State lost a competitive game at home to Oregon, but then went to Eugene and defeated the Ducks 68-62.  TVO caught fire for 23 points, including going 3/3 from three point range and 6/6 from the free throw line.  Transfer Ellie Mack had a great game, and in the absence of injured Tailor Jones, 6'9" Jelena Mitrovic had 10 points.

For some time I have been eying this trip to the Evergreen State Beaver State as a major challenge but I assumed that playing at Oregon would be the toughest Pac 12 game we would play this year.  Now it seem that Oregon State is improving just in time to give us a major challenge--the first of two for the trip.

Oregon State is 49 in the net (Oregon is 11); Oregon State is 34 by Massey (Oregon is 16.)  Oregon State is currently 8th in the Pac 12, meaning they would be in line to play us in the Pac 12 tournament in the second round if all seedings held.  Charlie Creme has them as "the last team in" the NCAA tournament, so they will be highly motivated to get a signature win--in fact any win--to burnish their credentials.

Last time, OSU actually outscored us in 2 of the 4 quarters.  The game was won with lock-down defense in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.  However, something was wrong with TVO in that game--she played only 14 minutes and took only 5 shots.  We should expect her to be back and playing at full strength after what she just did to Oregon.  Furthermore, Rueck had a very short week to prepare, while this time he has had oodles of time to scheme--and scheme is what he does best.  For these reasons I expect that the coming game will probably be quite different from the last--but hopefully not the results.

Not sure if it will be Wilson or a Hull defending TVO, but keeping her under control while also making it hard on Mack and Kennedy Brown will determine the game.

Right. The evergreen State is Washington. Oregon is the Beaver state.

And we're getting in the car and heading north on Thursday,  will be at both games, tix on my phone are all set. Are any other Cardboarders going?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon State Fri 7pm - 81alum - 02-15-2022

Mea Culpa!  I should have known that, since my parents lived in Oregon for a time.  I bet Oregon used to be an evergreen state before the beavers cut down all the trees!

Rueck previews tonight's game:

https://oregonstate.rivals.com/news/watch-oregon-state-wbb-previews-stanford-cal

He says Stanford may be the best team in the country.  He repeats several times, Rueck-style, that having the film from their loss to us is a big help.  Like Tara, Rueck is a film junkie and has no doubt watched that film half a dozen times and broken down our offense and defense player by player quite thoroughly.  He will have new plays and new wrinkles.  We should too.

High praise for TVO.  He notes she is both more physical and quicker than most opponents realize.  A big, strong guard does not always come across as a quick guard, but she is quicker than most realize.  I'm still curious why she played so little against us the first game.  It will be a gigantic factor if she plays her normal time and is effective for them, as she has been in her last few games.  "Catch and shoot with unlimited range, but also the physicality to get where she needs to go."  "She finishess so well."  Rueck could not compare her to any single prior OSU guard, but had to use a combination of greats to describe her qualities.  "Talia could be the best I've ever coached.  Every coach is looking for that combination--someone who can do all the things."

Again, it bears repeating that TVO played 14 ineffective minutes against us the first game.   I can't see that happening again.  Maybe she was not feeling well, but at the least Rueck will have studied exactly how we defended her and drilled her in techniques to overcome it.  We should be prepared with a curveball or two of our own.

A touching story about OSU's Andrea Aquino.   This 6'9" Paraguayan was the #7 ranked high school recruit in her class and the highest ranked recruit ever to go to Oregon State, and she has never been able to play in college.   You may remember that she was victimized in high school by being part of an athletic trafficking ring that left her abandoned and half starving in New Jersey, shuttled from house to house and missing meals.

After coming to Oregon State, she was never cleared to play.  She has had foot and ankle injuries, but "an undisclosed medical condition" has prevented her from ever taking the floor.  Someone here might know more, but I don't.  Despite this, she has stayed on athletic scholarship all 4 years, and Rueck defended that on the basis of ethics and commitment, and noted that she could have gone other places to see if she could find a program that would clear her medically to play (reminiscent of Jamie Carey for us) , but she has stuck with Oregon State.  She will go to Senior day on Sunday.  Apparently there has been some discussion about finding a way to get her safely into a game for a brief moment so she can enter a box score.  I remember Tara doing that for one of our players years ago--anyone remember who that was?  We did not do that for Ally Beebee as I recall, but perhaps it was Hannah Donaghe?

thanks for linking the story on andrea aquino!

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon State Fri 7pm - Jskass - 02-18-2022

Agreed it will be an interesting game tonight - hopefully not too interesting. Also - on Aquino yes it is great that OSU supports her and that she stayed there, especially once she had developed a close relationship with Patricia Morris and her family. I had heard it was a serious health matter (won't be specific to protect confidentiality) eliminating the possibility of basketball. Even more so than the Carey situation. We sat with OSU fans at the Nov 2018 Vancouver Showcase and clearly they were aware. Such a shame given all she has been through to get here and build a life.

BTW that tournament was when we realized what type of player Arike Ogunbowale was; I had previously been aware of her stats et.al. but we saw her physical play - way over the line and seemingly trying to hurt other players. This was well before her incident with Geno so I actually believe the UConn fans - having seen the prior evidence of her attitude.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon State Fri 7pm - 2006alum - 02-18-2022

Yes, have also heard that her health condition is pretty serious and (if I understand correctly) one common for players of her unusual size.

Re: Ogunbowale, I realize I have less UConn antipathy than most here being a former nutmegger, but on this the Husky faithful are 100% correct: Ogunbowale was a dirty bulldozer of a player. Her completely uncalled for, away-from-the-ball clotheslining of Crystal Dangerfield in their last regular season meetup was disgusting; not only did it go uncalled, but it should have been a flagrant. I've never rooted harder for the Huskies to win in my life than during that game.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon State Fri 7pm - Jskass - 02-18-2022

Yes Ogunbowale had at least 1 or 2 of those I believe in the game vs. OSU at that tournament. Should have been ejected but as usual treated better due to her talent. Muffet really blew it with her - could have helped her become a better player and person had she kept her out of games or penalized that behavior rather than rewarded it.

Yes, Donaghe.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon State Fri 7pm - WBB fan - 02-18-2022

Have just arrived in Eugene, will be heading to Corvallis shortly to attend the game. If I can manage to focus on the game AND handle Cardboard entries, will do so. But at least I should be also to manage a pre-game entry or two.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon State Fri 7pm - Card10Fan - 02-18-2022

My prediction is Brink will have a monster game back in her home state with family and friends there to watch. She leads us to victory scoring 20+ and we win comfortably. I'm hoping to speak it into existence! Go Card

Thanks!

Uh oh. I would have bet money Missy was doing Sunday's game.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon State Fri 7pm - martyup - 02-18-2022

Missy is asserting herself early on.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon State Fri 7pm - Card10Fan - 02-18-2022

Really slow start for us. A bad stretch of missed shots, turnovers, and fouls. Tara has gone deep into the bench already. Not happy with the starters. They are also not guarding Wilson at all. She needs to hit some perimeter shots.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon State Fri 7pm - martyup - 02-18-2022

Jerome gets 1st Q action!  And Kiki.

JVG is in!

Wow.  Brink only played 2 minutes and Jones 4 minutes in the 1st Q.

At Stanford OSU scored 25 points in the 1st Q.  Tonight they scored 10.  I think Tara figured out how to defend them.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon State Fri 7pm - TheFarm07 - 02-18-2022

We lead 17-10 after one quarter. After a fast 4-0 lead, Oregon State battled back to take a brief lead before we woke up and finished the quarter strong.

Each of our starters picked up an early foul each, starting with Lacie and Brink. Tara did not hesitate to dig deep into the bench as Jump, Belibi, Prechtel, Jerome, JVG and Iriafen all have seen playing time.

The announcers have pointed out that Wilson has been assigned as TVO's primary defender and noted that when Rueck pulled her for rest, Tara also sat Wilson.

For the Beavers, one of their key reserves Mack also is in foul trouble.
