WBB: Stanford 63 -- Washington 56 - 81alum - 02-25-2022

Preview:

Our final regular season game is against Washington.  The first game in Seattle was postponed and never made up, so this is the first time we meet them this year.   After the game will be the Senior Day ceremony, something we missed out on during COVID, and we are told that 5 will go through the ceremony.  I presume the five are Wilson, Jerome, Lexie, Lacie, and Hamilton.

Washington has had a pretty dreadful season that is the kind that is politely called a "rebuilding year."  However, they have indeed been improving markedly over the year.  Sunday marked their first conference win against ASU.  And last night they edged Cal at Cal by a point.  So yes they are 2-11 in conference, but they are also on a two game win streak.  As Tara said at last night's presser, they will be loose.

There really is no point in looking at their NET or other ratings.  Probably the best information are the stats for the last couple of games.  Washington has been playing 4 players for nearly all the available minutes and splitting time in the fifth position between two.  We we are apt to see six players.

6'1" junior forward Haley Van Dyke has led their scoring recently.  She is a solid all-around shooter who was 7/14 against Cal and 3/4 from three point range.

Their second offensive force has been 6'9" senior transfer (from Rice and Oklahoma) Nancy Mulkey.  She had 17 points and 4 blocks against Cal.  I am fairly sure we have never played against her before--certainly not since she just came over to Washington.  It will be interesting to see if Brink can get around her on offense, and defend her without fouling on defense.   When Mulkey was 15 she was written up as possibly being the next Griner.  Hasn't quite worked out that way, but she is formidable nevertheless.

5'11" sophomore forward Lauren Schwarz was also in double digits against Cal and played virtually the whole game.  She was 2/3 from three point range, but 6/6 from the free throw line--which makes me think she frequently drove and got fouled.

Missy Peterson is the name we probably remember the best.  We have played against this 5'11" senior guard numerous times.  She was out all last year with an ACL.  She has not been filling up the offensive stat sheets but can shoot from anywhere.

In the fifth slot Washington has been using a couple of different players.  Keep an eye on 5'11" freshman guard Jayda Noble.  We will probably see her for years to come.  She had significant points against ASU, and like Schwarz she seems to eat it up on the free throw line.

Based on the stats alone, Washington is not a great team.  They are negative on the season in scoring margin, turnovers, rebounding, etc.  They are shorter than we are in every position except their towering center.  But clearly they are playing well recently and have absolutely nothing to lose on our emotional senior day.  If we get tight and they play loose, then anything is possible.

Mulkey played together at Rice with the younger two Ogwumike sisters. I watched a game or two of theirs back then. Mulkey was not impressive then. Certainly very tall, but lacking in strength and quickness. Not in the same galaxy as Griner. I imagine she is better now, maybe much better, so I wouldn't discount her giving us problems.

Per a inside source Brown will not be participating in Sr day. I have said all year long she won’t be back. Guess I’m wrong. If back she is the 15th player on scholarship

On senior day we will honor: Lexi, Lacie, Anna, Jordan, Alyssa

If Brown is returning and the 15th scholarship for next year, that doesn't leave room for any transfers. Granted, we could lose someone who transfers out which also would open a spot. Is Brown expected to play basketball again? I've never heard anyone ask Tara about her or even acknowledge she is still part of the program other than seeing her sitting on the bench during the games. She seems beloved by her teammates.

Brown has two years of eligibility but this is her fourth year on campus, so I presume she will graduate.  If she is not participating in senior day then she must be coming back.  Many MA programs are two year programs.  We could possibly have her for a couple more years, which would not be a bad thing considering we are losing 4 guards.  While she did not play a lot freshman or sophomore year I thought she was athletic, defended and passed well, sometimes slashed to the basket and she had a nice floater.  She was not a proficient three point shooter.  I've long hoped she would add that to her repertoire and get a lot more minutes.

Maybe stuck in traffic like I was… delayed me about 40 minutes.. at this rate I’m hoping to miss as little of the game as possible, but at this rate it’s possibly going to be the entire first quarter if not the first half..

We are losing 16-17 after one quarter thanks to cold shooting by our team. In one possession, Lexie snagged two offensive rebounds and Jump had two looks at three pointers and missed them both, she's 1/5 from long range. But we've also missed some other shots around the basket and are at 33% shooting from the field.

UW is shooting 50% from the field with Schwartz 3/4.

In light of Q1, how about replacing that elegant ballerina video image with one of a crazy mosh pit? Stanford had better get it together, fast. Down by 4 w/ 3 left in H1. Keep playing from behind and it will eventually cost you; the late comeback won't materialize.

At the half: Stanford shooting 33%, Washington 50%.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Washington Sat noon Senior Day - TheFarm07 - 02-26-2022

We are down two at half to the team with the worst conference record 32-34 thanks to our absymal shooting. Our converted baskets are largely due to fast break layups, a couple Jump threes and some Jones midranges. Otherwise, we are missing, left and right, and shooting at a 33% clip and still we are only down by two.

I would like us to be more aggressive zeroing in on the basket and not settle for jump shots, given our cold shooting and drive to the basket and/or go to the low post, especially Brink.

Washington is shooting 50%, which we have to pull down in the second half. Schwartz is 5/9, including 2/2 from long range, contributing to a 4/9 three-point effort from the Huskies.

We’re getting killed by their high screen. Let’s see how we adjust in 2H.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Washington Sat noon Senior Day - Card10Fan - 02-26-2022

Washington has made a lot of jumpers but not a great half defensively. Offensively we are rushing and taking quick shots. Not getting the ball inside enough. Senior day in itself should be motivation to come out and play well. You want to play well at the end of the season. It doesn’t seem the last 2 weekends we are playing our best. We need a reset before the NCAA tourney.

We keeping chucking up brick threes; not surprising we're in a dogfight. Would have thought Tara would have told them to take advantage of our height. We're in love with the 3, including Brink. We're shooting 33% from the field, UW 50%. Yet another long ball shot by Brink.

My thoughts exactly.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Washington Sat noon Senior Day - TheFarm07 - 02-26-2022

We lead 47-46 after three quarters. Lexie was the MVP of the quarter, starting it off with seven straight points and contributing with steals and offensive rebounds. She really led the charge to keep us in it.

I still am frustrated with our offense, we really are struggling with shooting the ball this game and not finding alternatives; we've had success with Brink down low. I am not sure why are not setting up more plays for her or Belibi in the paint. Jones is the only one knocking down the midrange; let her start taking the ball in her hands too.

UW is still shooting at a 50% rate; I thought my box score wasn't updating, but they've been incredibly steady converting when they get their shot off. Fortunately, we've had some steals and shot clock violations in there to prevent a few opportunities.
