And chaos reigns across the Bay - cardcrimson - 05-21-2022

While I lament decision of moving our graduation from Frost, the folks across the Bay can't even get the Big Day off smoothly:

How counter-culturally-intuitive.

Love it. They out scattered the Stanford band.

A long time ago I was dating a Stanford grad whose son was a UCB. Whenever the son complained about some bureaucratic snafu at school, my boyfriend would just smile and say “that’s what you get for going to a school that’s run by the same people who bring you the DMV.”

RE: And chaos reigns across the Bay - akiddoc - 05-22-2022

My son just graduated from college. A large public university in the midwest. In fact, it has grown so rapidly that in the 4 years he has been there it has become almost as large as UCB (grew from 16K to 23K undergrads in 4 years). The way they handled graduation is to divide it into 14 ceremonies over a 6 day period. Most of the ceremonies were in the basketball arena, which holds about 10K. My son's grad was the smallest, with about 260 students, including graduate students (College of Architecture, Art and Design). There were about 1,000 guests in attendance. It worked out quite well.

I guess I graduated from a school run by people who bring you Caltrans. That “DMV” school has also brought you Calvin, Mary Clair King, Lawrence, Seborg and countless others.

The look down your nose attitude is exactly why we didn’t much care for the guys in the other dugout in 1965-68.

My nephew graduated from UCB 15 years ago. His department had its own graduation ceremony at the Greek Theater. It worked out very well. Maybe they have changed how they do things now?

Cal is still trying to justify the money that was spent to upgrade the football stadium, so they are looking for other university academic/athletic events that are being held elsewhere and move them to the stadium.  They should have turned the stadium into a cannabis arboretum.

RE: And chaos reigns across the Bay - Phogge - 05-22-2022

What a great idea.

Then Stanford can follow suit because the current stadium product isn't doing so well.

I graduated in ‘81. Departments then had their own ceremony.  Which is what I went to.  I believe there was the larger ceremony as well.  Didn’t go to that one.

I grew up near Stanford. Dad went to law school there. So, I like the school and of course love the football team that I have followed now for close to 60 years.

But I’ll always be grateful for the  fantastic education I received at Cal.  Not only in the classroom, but also a touch of the streets. Didn’t get much of that growing up on the Peninsula.

My brother's graduation from UCLA didn't have one giant joint ceremony. They get split up by schools and departments across a few days. It makes sense, since their stadium isn't in Westwood. But the only thing I didn't like about it was that his ceremonies weren't all on the same day. Well, that and the dork didn't even make it to one of his graduation dinners because he was still finishing one last term paper. We still went to the dinner, though.

RE: And chaos reigns across the Bay - Phogge - 05-22-2022

We graduated in the Cow Palace. No problem since my spouse and I owned a piece of a dairy at one time.

Right in the middle of Vietnam not a contrary word was heard unlike every noon on our quad.

Nobody had ever heard our Alma Mater. Shocked us as it is beautiful. Proud to graduate with so many teachers who taught and coached some of your kids, I bet.

My former mentor graduated from SFSU, as did my mother-in-law. I am confident that I would have gotten an outstanding education there. People get a little too caught up in reputation and ranking, when, in reality, it is less a question of what a school does for you than what you do while there and after.

But, TC, except for a few posts, this thread is about gentle ribbing of a rival, not a claim that one cannot get a great education there. The SNAFUs are a feature of any large bureaucratic organization (like the DMV), and if you don’t think that the Stanford bureaucracy can’t be a nightmare, you haven’t dealt with it.

RE: And chaos reigns across the Bay - Phogge - 05-23-2022

I have always gotten it BC.

Our rival was Santa Clara since USF had no real football. Pretty bloodless and no hatred. The Broncs probably would have said, “What rivalry.”

So the pettiness of Cal/Stanford made little sense to me especially when my cousin was a starting tackle on the Muncie teams. It was fun kidding a former Stanford player/poster about the permanent cleat mark that Chuck made on his chest.

Beating Cal to me is like beating Colgate. BFD.

Sounds like they had a Weenie roast in their new stadium.

This year, those two victories might indeed be "big deals". Hopefully just two of many, but...?.

The stadium is fine, and at 1/5 the cost of Port-A-John Memorial, was a bargain LOL. It's the contents of said stadium that are the problem

+1 to all of this. I've got a degree from the Weenies in addition to the Farm, as well as one from community college, and my education was just as good at my community college. That said, C.al is a bureaucratic hellhole that subjected my graduate student life to one long unending series of petty indignities, and for that reason alone, I'd strongly encourage anyone with the choice of Stanford vs. C.al to choose Stanford unless the program they want is much better at C.al or their financial aid offer is significantly stronger.

Heck no, we always got up for San Francisco State!  In my four years, we won 34-20 (1980), lost 42-7, won 44-14 and lost 17-16.  Lifetime program record was 18 wins, 5 losses.

As much fun as the SF State rivalry was (And Cal Poly SLO, Sac State, Hayward State, UC Davis, etc), I have to admit that our big historic rivalry was St. Mary's.  They used to play it at Kezar before 60,000 people.

RE: And chaos reigns across the Bay - Phogge - 05-24-2022

I have vague memories of going to Kezar with my uncle who was SI’s head coach. I think it was USF/St. Mary’s and to a little kid it was magic.

As a slightly older kid I remember buying candy at St. Claire’s on 24th. And it was Bob himself who took my nickel. Magic.

No scheduled play dates, no Travel teams, no needles in the playground. No screens except the tiny one in a console and “The Shadow” on the radio at night. Magic.

Now nearing the end I realize that it was the best time ever to just be a kid.
