My son just graduated from college. A large public university in the midwest. In fact, it has grown so rapidly that in the 4 years he has been there it has become almost as large as UCB (grew from 16K to 23K undergrads in 4 years). The way they handled graduation is to divide it into 14 ceremonies over a 6 day period. Most of the ceremonies were in the basketball arena, which holds about 10K. My son's grad was the smallest, with about 260 students, including graduate students (College of Architecture, Art and Design). There were about 1,000 guests in attendance. It worked out quite well.

Cal is still trying to justify the money that was spent to upgrade the football stadium, so they are looking for other university academic/athletic events that are being held elsewhere and move them to the stadium.  They should have turned the stadium into a cannabis arboretum.

I graduated in ‘81. Departments then had their own ceremony.  Which is what I went to.  I believe there was the larger ceremony as well.  Didn’t go to that one.

I grew up near Stanford. Dad went to law school there. So, I like the school and of course love the football team that I have followed now for close to 60 years.

But I’ll always be grateful for the  fantastic education I received at Cal.  Not only in the classroom, but also a touch of the streets. Didn’t get much of that growing up on the Peninsula.

I am confident that I would have gotten an outstanding education there. People get a little too caught up in reputation and ranking, when, in reality, it is less a question of what a school does for you than what you do while there and after.

But, TC, except for a few posts, this thread is about gentle ribbing of a rival, not a claim that one cannot get a great education there. The SNAFUs are a feature of any large bureaucratic organization (like the DMV), and if you don’t think that the Stanford bureaucracy can’t be a nightmare, you haven’t dealt with it.

So the pettiness of Cal/Stanford made little sense to me especially when my cousin was a starting tackle on the Muncie teams. It was fun kidding a former Stanford player/poster about the permanent cleat mark that Chuck made on his chest.

+1 to all of this. I've got a degree from the Weenies in addition to the Farm, as well as one from community college, and my education was just as good at my community college. That said, C.al is a bureaucratic hellhole that subjected my graduate student life to one long unending series of petty indignities, and for that reason alone, I'd strongly encourage anyone with the choice of Stanford vs. C.al to choose Stanford unless the program they want is much better at C.al or their financial aid offer is significantly stronger.

Heck no, we always got up for San Francisco State!  In my four years, we won 34-20 (1980), lost 42-7, won 44-14 and lost 17-16.  Lifetime program record was 18 wins, 5 losses.

As much fun as the SF State rivalry was (And Cal Poly SLO, Sac State, Hayward State, UC Davis, etc), I have to admit that our big historic rivalry was St. Mary's.  They used to play it at Kezar before 60,000 people.

I have vague memories of going to Kezar with my uncle who was SI’s head coach. I think it was USF/St. Mary’s and to a little kid it was magic.

As a slightly older kid I remember buying candy at St. Claire’s on 24th. And it was Bob himself who took my nickel. Magic.

No scheduled play dates, no Travel teams, no needles in the playground. No screens except the tiny one in a console and “The Shadow” on the radio at night. Magic.

Now nearing the end I realize that it was the best time ever to just be a kid.
