Hey bob… don’t challenge the athletes to a race.

Udodi peaked at the Pac 12's. I don't know if this was a miscalculation by the coaching staff or a reflection of Udodi's youth and attendant physical immaturity. If he was running his best times he would have made it to the next round. Stanford is not known for having good sprint coaches.

We aren't known as a sprinter's school.  Before Udodi the 100 and 200 Meter records were recorded more than 40 years ago by football players.  Udodi is perhaps the first real serious sprinter we have had in a long, long time.  We have been known for years as a distance runners school.

RE: Stanford T&F the World Cup - BobK - 07-16-2022

Actually Osaisai was more recently but still great point sadly. Nelson wasnt listed at 10.38 before this season.

RE: Stanford T&F the World Cup - BobK - 07-17-2022

American women go 1-3 in the Hammer with Cal’s Rogers from Canada 2nd.  5th was Former Homestead Of Sunnyvale student and daughter of former Stanford coach Jillian Weir
1-3 is first and third Not 1-2-3

RE: Stanford T&F the World Cup - BostonCard - 07-17-2022

Not quite understanding, if the second place finisher is a Canadian, then the American women did not sweep the podium, right?  Or did we annex Canada while I wasn't looking.

1-2-3 is a sweep 1-3 is first third
Is that why you won’t answer my pm ? :)

RE: Stanford T&F the World Cup - ca245 - 07-17-2022

The confusion can be avoided by using "1&3" for 1st & 3rd, because "1-3" can mean "1, 2, and 3", as in the dialog box for my printer. If I enter "1-3" for the pages to print, the printer prints pages 1, 2, and 3.

RE: Stanford T&F the World Cup - BobK - 07-17-2022

One three then

RE: Stanford T&F the World Cup - akiddoc - 07-17-2022

Larry Questad was the greatest sprinter in Stanford history. He was ranked 2-5 in the world for the 100/200 at times and second in the US to Bob Hayes when he sustained a thigh injury. He made a comeback and made the Olympic team in the 200 at Mexico City. He placed sixth in the famous Smith/Carlos race and sat in the stands when they made the fist salute. He was quoted as being, "embarrassed" at the time and told friends that his experience was ruined. Later he reconciled with Smith but not Carlos.

Funny you mentioned the football players who I think were Nelson and Lofton. Their marks are in meters while Larry's was in yards. Also there was some talk that Ralston may have tried to encourage him to play running back as the Stanford backs were famous for being slow.

He didn't like the line that was sometimes said of him, "World's fastest white man."

More on Larry.

He or maybe a son once posted to me on the old bootleg.

His races against Tommie Smith were classic with Larry winning the 100 Smith the 200
My brother ran track with Carlos at SJS.
Great statue of Smith and Carlos at SJS

RE: Stanford T&F the World Cup - jfredmuggs - 07-18-2022

After I quit the track team (long story — I was not the only one who quit) I briefly became a “manager.” I recall helping Questad with his starts, using a wooden clapper in place of a starter’s pistol. At the time I had no idea what a big star he was. Dumb. He seemed like a nice dude. I also helped out at a few meets, and I recall raking the broad jump pit for Tommy Smith. He was a terrific broad jumper, but I think he only took one attempt — probably all he needed. It was a dual meet, and he just did for the points.

RE: Stanford T&F the World Cup - Phogge - 07-18-2022

I was doing a San Jose State story for Real Sports or an HBO Doc called "Fists of Fury," can't remember which years ago. Soundman was Al Feuerbach. The great Larry Fan (SJS SID) on shaking hands with Al said, "After the interview would you like to visit the spot where you broke the world record?" So later we took a short walk and it was a parking lot. Al found the spot and Larry said that they should put up a plaque. I asked to see the field where I beat SJS in 1967 (Municipal Stadium was unavailable). Another parking lot! How soon they forget.

RE: Stanford T&F the World Cup - BobK - 07-18-2022

The demise of track at SJS one of the saddest sports stories ever
Tommie Smith was a very good basketball player also saw him as a Frosh and I think that’s all he played

RE: Stanford T&F the World Cup - BobK - 07-18-2022

Udodi on to the semis in the 200 running 20.34
Allman to the finals with a throw of 224
