Onwuzurike ran 10.26 in the 100 and won’t advance to the semis
Udodi peaked at the Pac 12's. I don't know if this was a miscalculation by the coaching staff or a reflection of Udodi's youth and attendant physical immaturity. If he was running his best times he would have made it to the next round. Stanford is not known for having good sprint coaches.
We aren't known as a sprinter's school. Before Udodi the 100 and 200 Meter records were recorded more than 40 years ago by football players. Udodi is perhaps the first real serious sprinter we have had in a long, long time. We have been known for years as a distance runners school.
Larry Questad was the greatest sprinter in Stanford history. He was ranked 2-5 in the world for the 100/200 at times and second in the US to Bob Hayes when he sustained a thigh injury. He made a comeback and made the Olympic team in the 200 at Mexico City. He placed sixth in the famous Smith/Carlos race and sat in the stands when they made the fist salute. He was quoted as being, "embarrassed" at the time and told friends that his experience was ruined. Later he reconciled with Smith but not Carlos.
Funny you mentioned the football players who I think were Nelson and Lofton. Their marks are in meters while Larry's was in yards. Also there was some talk that Ralston may have tried to encourage him to play running back as the Stanford backs were famous for being slow.
He didn't like the line that was sometimes said of him, "World's fastest white man."
