How do we get SIX wins now in 2022? Is there a Bowl team here? - ADPinWDC - 09-18-2022

From the games played so far around the league, can we see a position better than TENTH in the Pac-12 by Dec.?
And a likely 4-8 team?

It seems clear that Stanford and KalSucks might each need the Big Game win to go bowling.

Not playing COLO and ZONA really hurts this year.
At 1-1 after the bye, we face the double road trip to Seattle, then Eugene.
Then host a potent Beaver squad in PA that can take advantage of Defensive weaknesses.
South Bend awaits as Game 6, after Domers survived the Dingy Bears late Hail Mary attempt in a game that could have gone either way.
We could be 1-5 or by miracle 3-3 midway.  2-4 likely.

Up comes AZST at home -- possible win, depends on injuries.
Followed by what might be our last visit to Rose Bowl in a while for a homer with UCLA.
Maybe we get a split, sitting at 3-5, optimistically?  Posting 4-4 after 8 games on our schedule would be heroic.

We close out with WAST, who looked good cooking COST, and beat #19 WISC there.
Then a brutal visit to UTAH, and @KAL, finishing with BYU... who were pecked harshly by Ducks last night, 41-20.

I don't see us scratching 3 wins out of that finishing lineup, unless the O-Line goes Dominant and we get turnovers.
So, we need to be at 4-4, going into the final four games.  Beat WAST or BYU, and Big Game WILL BE FOR A BOWL BERTH.
Kal may need Big Game for a bowl also...  Similar to Big Game 1982 when Kal entered at 6-4; Elway-led Stanford at 5-5.
NOTE:  2022 will be the FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY of "The Play".  A Day that will Live in Infamy.

Yours is one of the most OPTIMISTIC forecasts I've come across so far.

Four PAC-12 teams plus BYU are ranked in the top-20.  If you pencil in losses to Oregon, Washington, Utah and BYU, that leaves us having to win five games against Cal, ASU, OSU, WSU, UCLA, and Notre Dame.

I am honestly having trouble projecting more than two more wins, and I’m one of the more Pollyannaish posters here.

We play the Beavers at home, in Stanford Stadium, in Stanford, California.

Let me fix that…

We play the Beavers at home, in Stanford Library, in Stanford California.

The best chance would be at Bowlmor in Cupertino. As far as football, you'll most likely see another couple, maybe three (?), more W's in the next ten weeks. That is if McKee stays vertical.

Let me ask a slightly different question. Out of Stanford's 10 remaining games, in how many of them will Stanford be favored? I'll guess 1, maybe 2. ASU, maybe Cal. Stanford will probably be the underdog for most of the season.

Is this a trick question?

Best chances for wins are home games (ASU just fired Herm, and BYU was just blown out on the road by a probably decent but not great Ducks squad).

Winning at Cal or Notre Dame are also doable (Cal nearly did it this weekend in South Bend, and arguably should have; different story though winning at night in mid October as opposed to midday mid September).

UCLA also should have lost to South Alabama at home, and is struggling mightily to draw crowds to Rose Bowl.

We’re neither good nor bad enough to be pencilling in any Ws and Ls. We play a lot of average to good teams, but probably no great teams.   That means almost every game is Winnable or losable

There exists a universe where the offense is humming, the D improves to average, made to look worse then it was by an elite USC offense, and we win 8-9 games.  There exists a universe where the D is awful and offense average and we win 2 games.

That’s why we play the game.

Agreed - well put!
We have one thing that will keep us in the hunt:  a very good, very smart, healthy QB.   I'll also give credit to our receivers.
I'm hopeful the o-line and the D will improve.    The dawgs will be a challenge, but I saw some spark in the second half of the USC game.  Take care of the damn rock and we are in that game.  Lose the turnover battle and the outcomes will be more of the same.

The more I see of Tanner McKee the more I yearn for what Mills and Costello brought. McKee, while serviceable, is the kind of QB who needs a top quality supporting cast as in a running game, a nastier O-line and, needless to say, a DEFENSE. He doesn't. He is nowhere near mobile enough to keep opponents honest and wary. As a result, he's gonna be in harm's way all season. I hear he impresses NFL scouts. Maybe he'll blossom on Sundays.  Maybe not.

"True dat." McKee doesn't need to be able to rip off 30-yard runs as he did in high school. But, he absolutely has to be smarter in the pocket and be able to pick up a tough five to ten yards for a first down when there is an open lane.
