2022 OSU at Stanford Predictions Thread - george - 10-04-2022

The team may be 1-3, but the cardboard is 4-0.  How are we feeling about our chances against the Beavers?

Oregon State: 34
Stanford: 17

Why does Stanford winning by a score of 50 to 40 get the status of "shame?". I think the formula need tweeking.  Perhaps it only looks at the number of points the opponent will score.  If that's the case, our defense deserves the moniker.

It's topsy turvy. I picked the Beavers and it's red hot.

Ignore what the widget says when you first submit -- it's a bug.  If you navigate back to the thread, you'll see the shame / red hot reflected correctly.

Instead of All Right Now, the new band song should be "Shame, Shame, Shame," written by Sylvia Robinson.

Just watched the Oregon State / Utah game and it'll be an interesting match-up.

It's almost amusing because Oregon State reminds me so much of Stanford -- they run a mesh play, we run a mesh play. They like to run end-around reverses, we like to run end-around reverses. They make mistakes and turn the ball over, we make mistakes and turn the ball over. Their secondary lets picks fall through their hands, our secondary lets picks fall their their hands.

But they have  physical fronts -- I think they even out physical-ed Utah with both lines (!!) -- containing Utah's running attack (except for their quarterback) and getting good running yards with some very hard running and a mobile quarterback. Utah's offense did not produce a lot of yards (though it didn't need to).

But which would I rather have -- an immobile (future NFL) quarterback who makes good decisions, or a choice between a mobile quarterback who makes very bad decisions and throws ducks and a medium-mobile quarterback who makes some bad decisions.

I'd choose McKee.

Neither team is a complete team -- both have serious flaws, so if one team can cover their weaknesses and exploit their opponent's, things could get shockingly lopsided. But on average, I pick Stanford at home by a hair.

Not a Complete Team Visiting - 23

QB Nolan is "day to day" after neck strain last week, the 42-16 loss @UTAH.
ORST put up 417 yards of Offense against the toughest defense in Pac-12, with a second string QB, but the 4 INTs were lethal.
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/...nford.html
All-Am CB Clark Phillips for Utah pulled off the Hat Trick on INTs killing the Beavs.
https://www.deseret.com/2022/10/1/233805...-rj-hubert

Our Defense lacks the ability to apply pressure, so maybe a frosh, backup QB can be enough?
Beavs cover the 7, because we don't have KB Kelly at CB.  We need TOs to win the game.
Perhaps ORST 34, STAN 23

Since the team should always prevail over the individual I'd say I prefer that if the team loses two more in a row and becomes 1-5 then it's time to think about next year (especially if I think the university doesn't have the stones to fire Shaw). Then I would pat McKee on the back, thank him for his service, wish him well and give playing time to the two young guys to battle-test them for next year. Of course Shaw has a questionable sense of intestinal fortitude and will not be criticized by anyone on the planet. Stanford went from EUTM to an introvert.

And entering 2023 with the embargo on transfers (especially QB's) Stanford is playing with a hand tied around its back. Doomsday.

I don't know if I would go that far, but I do think when it becomes apparent that our chances of winning the game are just about zilch (like we are down 31-3 at halftime) I would definitely pull McKee and give the younger guys some experience.

Jonathan Smith gets his charges back on track, Shaw's spinning wheels dig deeper into the ditch.

Funny, I am 1-3 as well.  A pattern seems to be emerging. I fully expect to be 1-4 by 11:30pm on Saturday night (oof).

Three generations of men in my family will be there to witness the beating.

OSU vs. SU - MV72018 - 10-06-2022

OSU 37
SU 27

RE: 2022 OSU at Stanford Predictions Thread - Leftcoast - 10-07-2022

Two flawed teams meeting at Stanford's home stadium.  We're not world beaters but neither are the Beavers and I think this is where the battered good guys finally make a stand and some of our schemes that sputtered against UO, USC, etc finally haltingly show some life - Stanford 27, Beavs 24.

I'd like to wish the rest of you luck but I can't for two reasons the obvious one and narrow self-interest. I'm currently in first place in the Score Prediction game.  This could be where the wheels fall off since I'm picking against the main tide here.

Seriously, if not now when?

RE: 2022 OSU at Stanford Predictions Thread - needle - 10-07-2022

No rational reason to pick Stanford to win or even cover, but will be rooting (from afar) that Stanford pulls out the victory.

I expect a closer game than what we’ve seen the last two weeks.

RE: 2022 OSU at Stanford Predictions Thread - Austroturf - 10-08-2022

Hank thinks we can win this one (by a FG).  The guy from Angrybeavs has us losing by 18 points.  Reality is almost certainly somewhere in between.  Now with Nolan out at QB, I see this one going down 31-24 Oregon State.  Their defense looks pretty good; ours not so much -- and that will probably be the difference.

Well, at least the cardboard streak of picking the winner is intact.  That one really hurt.

Agree.  I was absolutely hoping to be wrong for once this year, but the worst-case scenario played out in the final minutes.  There were multiple paths to victory, but the team couldn't navigate them.  I am, sadly, 5-0 on the year.
