2022 Stanford at Utah Predictions Thread - george - 11-10-2022

This week’s game feels like a true test of the “predict with your heart” crowd.

I've gone over to the dark side, this is the first time I have ever picked us to lose in the prediction game....

A lot to a little.  This is going to be beyond ugly.

If we did win this game, I wonder where this would rank on our all time list of upsets. Below 2007 U$C, but not below too many more.

The cardinal rule for entertainment is to be watchable in the least. This team is unwatchable. The cardinal sin for a sports program is to be irrelevant. Stanford checks that box. Stanford the Broadway Show would close after one act in Peoria. Stanford the Movie wouldn't even be able to go straight to video.

Now, Eric bails. The house is flooded, the tornado has landed, the earth has split apart. When Eric bails Doomsday approaches.

All that's left is to LOL and have a cocktail.

we have a group who does "Big Din" the Friday before Big Game, we've had as many as 20 people attend, this year it is looking like six...

I was working on my annual "Night before Big Game" piece, depressing when the the feature character is our placekicker....not sure this will see the light of day this year...

You could use your immense talents to write about your old T Dome friends as they approach senility.

may revive "The Charge of the Cardinal Brigade"...it seems like it might be more appropriate this season....

I dunno, there's an implication of team speed in that title that some might construe as misleading.....

....Unless you're referring to the exodus of STHs over the off-season and of fans out to the tailgates at halftime.

Of course, if we're talking about fan attendance maybe "The 300" would work.

RE: 2022 Stanford at Utah Predictions Thread - Austroturf - 11-10-2022

Hard to predict a game like this.

First, Utah should be in a position to name the final score.  But Kyle Whittingham has much bigger fish to fry than the Cardinal filets he will be presented with this Saturday.  For him, achieving a comfortable W at minimal effort and risk of injury will be his goal.  So the question looms: when will he take his foot off the gas and let the 2nd string get some reps?  Then the next question: how hungry and effective is this 2nd string up against our threadbare offensive and defensive units?  If they are really hungry and effective and Whittingham encourages them, then the Utes may score in excess of 60.  But I think Whittingham will probably pull Cam Rising and other key personnel toward the end of Q3 when the Utes are up 38-6 and just try to end the game uneventfully during Q4.  We get a TD, they get a TD, and we part company in Rice Eccles Stadium at 45-13 Utes.

Yes, this is bad enough.  In 2017, Bryce Love ran for 157 yards in a 23-20 Cardinal victory in Salt Lake City.  Stanford led 23-13 until Utah scored a late TD in the last minute of play and closed to 23-20.  That was our last victory vs. the Utes.  They beat us handily in 2018 at home, then pulverized us last year 52-7 (also at home).  The all-time record stands at 6-4 Utes.  After Saturday, it will be 7-4.

This is where we are at.

On any given day, one Pac12 team might beat another Pac12 team.  Although not likely in our case, especially at altitude in SLC, we miraculously win, 24-23.  Utah will have to make a lot of mistakes.

Now just a minute. I am one of those guys.

Er, ah...what was the question?

Me too, why would we change now?  Do you think we have not been expecting all the previous losses? We are committed to the losing strategy in this game, which is just for fun.

RE: 2022 Stanford at Utah Predictions Thread - Austroturf - 11-11-2022

For those looking to revisit happier times, I found this from 2009.  This was Harbaugh's 3rd year; and with this victory over the #7-ranked Ducks, Stanford became bowl eligible for the first time in 8 years.  We moved to 6-3 (the inverse of our record at this juncture in 2022); and 44,000 fans filled the stands, with the student section storming the field after the clock ran out and the Cardinal prevailed 51-42.  Exciting, memorable football.

Well, yeah, it's all for fun.  I mean, if I maintain my position in the top 5 for this season, I won't be putting it on my resume.  But isn't the objective to be as close to right as possible?  I always submit a score that I think tracks reality, then root for Stanford regardless of my guess.  I'm 8-1 this year and am happy about the one time I was wrong (Notre Dame).  I wish I had been wrong more often (except for Colgate and ASU).  But then, if that had occurred, I probably would have switched to picking Stanford to win.

those highlights were spectacular

Happier times indeed

RE: 2022 Stanford at Utah Predictions Thread - Phogge - 11-12-2022

Strength and conditioning. Try to stop us Ducks.

Now a pathetic mess.
