The last sentence before the paywall stopped me was
"as he tries to understand how a game turned into an obligation and into a corruptive force."
I wish I knew the follow up! But it sounds like a dilemma we are all having with one of our favorite pastimes.

So, Andrew Luck will be the next head coach? I'm on board.

Darn it. Blocked. What I could read just confirms what I’ve always thought. Andrew Luck is truly a Unicorn. I miss watching him tremendously. And selfishly. I’m very glad he’s out of the game after what he went through.
You want to sell the “40 year decision” in todays world. He’s the poster for it. Although in truth I suspect he’d still be as special if he went to Northeastern Southern Tech.

The ESPN+ article is good. Doesn't reveal a lot we didn't already know, but goes into more detail. The word "corruptive" near the end of the free part doesn't seem to refer to anything in particular that's addressed later. It's not clear what the article author had in mind with that word.

Yeah, I wonder why they cho$e that provocative word and dangled it at the end of the free $ection. $eems funny. Probably not the word that Andrew would have chosen.
It definitely made me take note.

I'm on board with Luck being a quarterback coach or some kind of recruiting coordinator. He needs much more coaching experience before being a head coach at a DI program like Stanford.

Great players only sometimes make good coaches.

Joking aside, the article implies he's at Stanford working on his education M.S. in order to become a high school teacher, at which point he'll also coach football at the high school level.

Of course the definition of great is debatable, but name any great players that made good coaches (note, Harbaugh not a great player, imho).
I'll start and give you Deion. Great player, and thus far, good coach. Others?

Chuck Taylor. Bear Bryant.

I love Andrew but I think we’d all agree Harbaugh had the more productive NFL career.

Does Mike Ditka count as a great player? Five pro-bowls, 427 catches, 5812 yards, and 43 touchdowns.
In the NBA, some guy named Bill Russell.
In MLB, Joe Torre.
In soccer, Pep Guardiola and Zinedine Zedane both qualify.

Who thought Harbaugh was a great QB? Nooooooooobody.
Indy and Irsay killed Luck as New England did to Plunkett. Was hoping Andrew could have had a second chance with the Niners. . . .

Bear never played pro ball. Chuck did for one season after serving in WWII. Neither great players. Chuck's shoes tho, another story. . . .

In other sports, probably lots. I would think Steve Kerr would qualify and many others. Football seemingly less so. Some decent players that became great coaches seem to be much more prevalent.

The Yogi Berra effect. It's hard to articulate what a great player does subconsciously and flawlessly. "Just watch me do it," Yogi used to growl, frustrated at trying to improve a hitter's swing.

Ex-NFL greats who became good coaches? Mike Ditka, Raymond Berry, Norm Van Brocklin...

Not a lot of playing greats, but I'd include OT's Forest Gregg and Art Shell. Probably Joe Schmidt (10x Pro Bowl), Dick LeBeau had 62 INTs. Curly Lambeau was basically the Babe Ruth of the Packers. Bart Starr, I suppose.
Lots of DBs, like Tom Landry (all-pro). Mike Nolan, Herm Edwards (33 INTs), Jeff Fisher, Dick Jauron, Don Shula (21 INTs in 73 NFL games), Leslie Frazier,
Some mediocre to good quarterbacks, like Harbaugh and Kubiak.
Linebackers Jack Del Rio, Mike Singletary, Bill Cowher, Marty Schottenheimer, Jim Haslett,
