WBB: Stanford 60 -- Cal 56 -

It has been only 2 weeks since we last played Cal. I won't repeat the information in the last preview which can be found here:
https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=23900
However, since we defeated Cal at Maples 90-69, we went on to beat both Arizona schools, while Cal lost narrowly to Arizona and beat ASU rather handily. In its Arizona game, Cal outscored Arizona in both the 3rd and 4th quarters and tied the game late in the fourth, but then fell short. If they had not dug a 13 point hole for themselves in the first half when Arizona's defense flustered them, they could easily have prevailed. They had 4 players in double digits.
Against ASU Cal's defense surged in the second half and held ASU to 8 points in the 4th quarter, and Cal broke open a close game and won 74-61.
While we know Cal's 2 speedy guards well, two bigs for Cal are beginning to emerge for them. In the ASU game Claudia Langarita, a 6'4" sophomore from Spain, came off the bench for 14 points. And 6'3" Michelle Onyiah is proving to be a strong defender. Those two have not started a game this year, but between the two of them are recently taking about 40 minutes. So Cal has been developing some offensive and defensive height in recent games, and is becoming more balanced than previously.
Yes, Stanford should be favored over Cal, but we are entering into the "any given day" territory now. While some teams just have no realistic chance to knock us off on any day, Cal does have such a chance. Cal is plenty good enough if we turn the ball over, get into a shooting slump, get into foul trouble, etc. Those sorts of things are more likely away than at home, so nothing should be taken for granted.
In our last game Jones destroyed the Cal defense in the first half, and Jump went off in the second. I presume that Cal will defend both of them better than last time. I would look for different people--maybe Brink, Iriafen, or someone off the bench--to have a good day on Sunday.

I expect Brink (who played a poor game against AZ) to bounce back offensively, while continuing to play good defense.

I’m pretty sure she won’t go 0 for 6 from the three point line. She’ll either hit one of her first two or just stop shooting from distance.
Part of Hayley’s improved play over the last few games has been shot selection, namely taking the shots she wants to take vs what the defense wants you to take. Defenses want Brink at the 3-point line vs in the post or driving the lane.

I finally watched the replay of the first Cal game and I thought Cal was pretty solid, albeit undersized (as most teams would be) against us. I think they will end up in the upper half of the conference. Their guard play (McIntosh, Curry, Peanut) looked good and Onyiah in particular looked pretty good. Their post Lutjie-Schipholt is too short but played really tough.
I suspect they don't have too much depth but I think they'll have a good season.

I don't know.... This is the first team that we will have faced twice. Beating Stanford would be the dream and goal of Cal all season long. They've had a chance to see what did and didn't work for Cal and for Stanford, and a chance to come up with a counter.
Stanford has a number of teams to focus on, not just one. Stanford can't adjust too much for any one opponent, when the goal is to beat all comers. I'm sure Cal hopes it is a trap game for Stanford.

Am most of the way through the Arizona game and the main thing I noticed is that a number of the treys Cam shot were essentially catch-and-shoot treys, which I don't thinks she's very good at. (And one or two were last-second passes that Cam had to take to avoid the shot clock violation.) She seems better taking treys on the ball coming off her own dribble, which is how I've usually seen her take three point shots.

I'm glad this is an only game this week affair instead of a second game. This gives us time to prepare and focus on cal rather than take them for granted and turn it into a trap game. I though cal played us well last time, but they simply don't have the same size and talent. We just need to play with the same type of energy and intensity that we would put forth against a top 25 team. I agree that Brink will be a major plus factor. Look for Belibi to also figure strongly. Jump and Haley will find their opportunities - cal can't focus on them too much or our other players will destroy cal.

Catch and shoot generally is easier, and I recall Cam making those in past games.
My take is simply that Arizona decided to draw Cam out of the paint by leaving her wide open at the 3 point line, gambling that she'd miss enough for that to be a net advantage. It worked this time, at least in that she missed -- but Stanford won anyway.

Looking forward to seeing a few of you at the game at Haas today. Hopefully the rain holds off until after the drive back--but is predicted to start just about when the game is ending.

Terrible start to this game. We've scored 3 points in almost 6 minutes of play. 5 turnovers. We are tied at 3.

End of first Q -- Stanford 13 Cal 12
Is that our lowest scoring quarter this season?
We're shooting 26.7%. That's got to be a quarter low.

Kiki has missed some bunnies last few games. WhenFran is on wing , cal just packs paint, makes it tough to get inside
Brink taking some tough shots, but Nobody can shoot.
