WBB: Stanford 62 -- Oregon 54 - 81alum - 01-28-2023

Preview:

Oregon has emerged in recent years as a threat to Stanford dominance in the Pac 12.  This year, however, Oregon has had some setbacks as it adjusts to a roster which was greatly changed by transfer and injury.  Oregon had 5 transfers out and lost Sedona Prince to injury--all of which was somewhat offset by getting Taya Hanson to transfer from ASU and getting top recruits Chance Grey and Grace VanSlooten to mature rapidly.  But the cauldron at Oregon seems to have been boiling for a few years now with Graves having to throw in new ingredients on a constant basis.

This year Oregon is 14-6 and coming off a close win up at Cal.  They are unranked on the AP, the coaches have them at 23, Massey has them at 22, and they are 14 in the NET.  Their first four losses were to ranked teams, including UCLA.  But before they beat Cal last night they had dropped two in a row to Washington State and then to Oregon State.  Their best win was over #17 Arkansas back in December.  So their resume is looking a little questionable.

Oregon's offense is, as usual, its strength.  It has four starters averaging double digit ppg, and the fifth is a skyscraper center that has also been scoring well of late.

Leading the way is Endiya Rogers, a 5'7" senior guard (transfer from USC) averaging 16 ppg and 46% (not a typo) three point shooting.  She is 40/88 from three point range.  Rogers is speedy, quick, can make her own shot, and can score from all three levels.  She is point guard and has about a 2.5:1 assist to turnover ratio with more than 80 assists to her credit.

Not far behind is 6'3" freshman forward Grace VanSlooten, the ESPN #13 overall from her class.  She is averaging 15 ppg, does not shoot threes.

We are all familiar with Te Hina PaoPao, the 5'9" junior guard who is a natural point guard, but now shares that role with Rogers.  She is averaging 14 ppg and shooting 36% from three point range.  She also has more than 70 assists, so she and Rogers seem to be almost dual-point guards.

Oregon also starts freshman guard 5'9" Chance Grey, the #7 ESPN overall recruit from her class.  Grey has adjusted well to the college level.  She is scoring 11 ppg and shooting 34% from three point range.

The fifth starter is sophomore center 6'8" Philipina Kyei, shooting 57% from inside and dominating the team stats in rebounds.  She is averaging about 20 minutes per game.

Finally, the aforementioned Taya Hanson, the 5'11" senior guard who was one of ASU's stars before jumping ship and shooting over 40% from three.  She also has a killer step-back jumpshot.   She is the sixth player and the first off the bench.

Oregon is making 8-9 three point shots a game and shooting 37% from range.  We need to come close to that if we want a comfortable win, even though we may have the advantage inside.

This lineup looks very formidable and will require a very strong and deep perimeter defense as well as a a way to control VanSlooten on the interior.  It is almost the reverse of how opponents defend us--we need the "pack" the EXterior and blanket Van Slooten.  Otherwise the inside-out game will become an offensive buzzsaw.

Against Cal, all five starters were in double digit points, including Kyei, and the bench (including Hanson) gave them very little.  But the offensive balance makes it hard to deploy doubles and Tara's typical scouting report defense may simply not work against a team of 5 scorers.  No sagging off, so I doubt we can really shut down their offense.  To win this game our offense is going to need to step up, and we are going to have to start hitting treys in some quantity--especially if Oregon plays its usual zone.  Oregon is not that deep, so getting them in some foul trouble would work wonders.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Sunday 1pm - 81alum - 01-29-2023

If last week's 49ers game somewhat interfered with attendance for Colorado, I wonder how much worse this week will be, given that the overlap is worse and the level of playoffs is higher.

Attendance for Oregon State on Friday was outstanding--3890--better than Utah.  For Colorado we were at 4122, with a start one hour later than today.  Will be interesting to see how we do against the NFC championship game.

It wasn't a joke they are selling beer and wine at Maples now. Wish I had realized that on Friday.

Let's see some smooth basketball from the Cardinal today.

Attendance looks pretty good, considering. Missy is here.

Dammit!

With all the Oregon fans in the house, I hope Maples doesn't smell like Duck farts.

Could we have a worse start?  Jump misses a wide open 3 and then Brink gets called for a foul on the first possession.

But then . . . we take charge.  Brink has 4 brinks already halfway through the first.

Oh Lord, Missy is at the monitor.

Great defense by the Cardinal.  We held the Ducks to 12.5% -- 0%

We are only shooting 35.5 -- 33.3, but we lead by 7 at the end of the first Q.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Sunday 1pm - martyup - 01-29-2023

Brink has 6 brinks with 5 minutes to play in the 2nd Q!

Bosgana is really contributing off the bench.  Prechtel getting some minutes.

7 brinks by Brink!  In the first half!

Like the double red head lineup.

We're shooting 33% from the field so far, 2 for 14 from deep, a measly 1 for 2 on FT attempts, 8 assists, and Haley shooting 25% (2 for 8). Only up by 6 at halftime. Color me unimpressed. O woes continue.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Sunday 1pm - TonyLima - 01-29-2023

Team got lazy on offense. Instead of working it inside they settled for taking threes. Bad move.

9 0 run by oregon last 4 1/2 minutes

That's poor. Too much long ball. we're 10 for 22 on 2-pt shots and 2 fir 14 on 3-point shots. Btw, Haley is shooting 10% on 3-point shots for the year, compared with 24$ last year and 35^ two years ago. A guess: either not in top physical condition, or insufficient practice on her shot, or has lost confidence in her ability to make non-layups. What else could explain this major regression?

Haley hasn’t developed a consistent perimeter shot in 4 years. She’s very talented but I’m not sure she’s that committed to improving her outside game or there would be some evidence of the work put in at this point in her career. It is what it is at this point. It’s not gonna change in the next month.

It’s nice to see more of Elena - I think she can be an outside threat. Get the ball inside more. Brink was standing under the hoop and opted to try to pass to Prechtel once and it resulted in a miss. Be a little selfish inside Brink and take over offensively. We are jacking up perimeter shots cause they are leaving us wide open. I thought we had better pace at times and tried it play faster.

Look for us to explode on offense this half and beat the Ducks by 20+

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Sunday 1pm - mbdude - 01-29-2023

The shooting by both teams in this game is beyond bad

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Sunday 1pm - CompSci87 - 01-29-2023

Maples is a construction site today. Stanford has been piling up blocks, plus both teams laid plenty of bricks.

Oregon came out of their shooting funk late in the 2nd. Hope we can do that too.

And.... Take care of the ball!!

Brink has a triple 8 right now.

Note to Cam. Alone under the hoop? Shoot, don’t pass.

Not for long. Now 10-8-8.
