WBB: Stanford 92 -- Sacred Heart 49 -
81alum - 03-13-2023
Preview:
Sacred Heart won the Wednesday play-in game and becomes the 16 seed that will play Stanford on Friday, 4:30. Tara was scouting the game, and will have a couple of days to get ready for Sacred Heart.
Sacred Heart is 18-13 overall and is getting back to the NCAAs for the first time in 11 years. They play in the Northeast conference and beat Farleigh Dickinson, which had a much better record, in their tournament. They are 258 in NET. Massey has them at 285.
Sacred Heart was, frankly, mediocre even in their own league before their league tournament vaulted them over teams with better records. They are among the weakest teams in the tournament, and weaker than many many teams that did not make it to the tournament. They do not compare favorably with the infamous Harvard team of 1998, and worries about another 1/16 upset should be quashed.
That said, they played with spirit and poise on Wednesday, and they have an interesting and very talented point guard. 5'3" freshman Ny'Ceara Pryor was all-everything in her league this year and averaged 18 points. Wednesday night she had 10 assists, and showed some jaw-dropping moves and hustle, but shot just 3-15. She will be fun to watch, but she may not be that difficult to guard. She is only a 20% three-point shooter and much of her scoring was on curls and drives to the basket, where she might have problems against a much taller defense.
Sacred Heart had two players shooting 30% or so from three point range on the season, but they managed only 3/21 from range on Wednesday night against Southern. On offense, they are shooting 28% of their treys and making about 5 a game. I saw them running lots of curls around screens, and a lot of drives toward the basket.
Sacred Heart does not have much height. Their tallest regular player is one of their two Wood sisters, a 6''1" Kelsey, along with 6'2" Carly Stroemel, although neither usually starts.
On defense, they played a pesky 1-2-2 press much of the night, and played a quick 2-3 zone at times. They had 10 steals which forced Southern up to 20 turnovers, and those were really important to Sacred Heart's win. They average 10 steals a game, which is very high.
So what kind of game could they give us on Friday? A lot will depend on what kinds of changes Tara has implemented in the wake of our dismal performance against UCLA, and how many of those changes she will be willing to show in what amounts to an exhibition game. I don't expect to see anything new from our offense on Friday, and I do expect to see lots and lots of bench players contributing. Come Sunday we are more likely to get the "reveal" of whether, or how, Tara has reacted to our late season woes.
Given that Sacred Heart is not an awesome three point shooting team, I think we should be able to keep them out of the paint almost completely and stymie their offense. Whether we cruise to a mediocre win or break out for one of those rare 100 point games will depend on how well Tara has gotten our offense back in gear. I fully expect to see a lot of bench play--it is the ideal game for it. But I'd really love to see the first team all in sync and scoring at will first. I'm not necessarily predicting that, but hoping for it.

OK, Peter, but I am not seeing that appear on the official NCAA bracket nor on the Stanford website yet. Where did you get the info?

ESPN App. I find that surprising because I thought Stanford would get the later game.
TV will be ESPN2
Also, tickets for Wednesday game go on sale today and tickets for first two rounds tomorrow. I just don’t know if tickets for Wednesday will include Friday and Sunday.

Gonzaga/Old Miss will be the more competitive game, and it will give our coaches and team a chance to watch them after our own game. Plus it puts our game in prime time in the East. All in all, this is fine. Not so great for those of us driving to the game and parking, given that free parking opens officially at 4 pm. Hopefully they won't be handing out tickets for those who get there half an hour early.

I'm pretty sure we will be the second game, not the 4:00 or 4:30 game. Makes no sense to have us first and that has never been how they do it.

We’ve parked in the lot across from Maples before 4:00 on early weekday game days and haven’t gotten ticketed. I would think they would accommodate those attending games.

It is now on the official bracket as 4:30.

earlier better for viewers across the country so maybe went with that tradeoff?

Cool, cool. ESPN can show those empty stands and east coast recruits can assume we have no fan support out here.

Thanks, 81alum, for starting the thread and the preview. I look forward to your updates. Interesting, only Stanford and Indiana are #1 seeds to be facing a play-in game opponent in the 1st round. For us, with that game on our home court on Wednesday. it means that the Card will be able to scout and prepare for a totally unfamiliar team much more easily than South Carolina and Virginia tech, the #1 seeds not facing a play-in winner. Not that I see Southern U or Sacred Heart, as per the preview as serious challengers, but one can't just take a win for granted. We need to be ready. I want to see the Card really make a statement in this game, that we are ready, ready, and look out!
Maybe that "earlier better for viewers" in the east is the reason Stanford is in the 1st game. 4:30 is 7:30 on the east coast, real prime time. Note also how ESPN is scheduling things, the Stanford vs ?? game is on ESPN2 whereas the Gonzaga/Ole Miss game is ESPNU. Or maybe not re the timing. The South Carolina game on Friday is at 2 pm EDT (11 am our time) -- how to explain that one? They will fill the arena, but I suspect their fans are not happy with the time.
At least the coverage of the women's tournament looks complete, all games available on one of ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, or ESPNN -- and if you're in the bay area with comcast, you can get them all on cable, or use the ESPN app, or misc streaming services. Great improvement over that horrible "whiparound" in years past.

It’s fine except for those of us who have to teach from 4:30-5:30 and 6-7pm on Friday. I’ll be watching on tape delay.

Indiana also faces a play-in opponent. The play-in games are two 16-vs-16 matchups and two 11-v-11 matchups, so the 6-seeds in So. Carolina and V. Tech’s brackets (Creighton and UNC, respectively) also face play-in teams.

Right. I have corrected this, actually done right now, before I saw your post. Elderly eyes and tiny print on my bracket are my only excuse for the initial error!

Cardboarders can not use these excuses for this game:
Players don't have enough rest.
Travel issues weighed on the players.
Players not use to altitude.
Coaching staff didn't have enough time to prepare.
Refs want Sacred Heart or Southern to beat Stanford.

Not to offend the woofing gods, but excuses won't be needed.
RE: WBB: Stanford vs Sacred Heart/Southern Friday 4:30 -

here's another theory on start time: I wonder if they're giving the favored (home) team the EARLIER game as an advantage of hosting (less time between games) -- just noticed UConn plays in their first game 3:00 Saturday (Baylor-Alabama 5:30) and maybe that also explains the South Carolina time....checking ESPNW site it seems to hold for almost all of the top 4 seeds/hosts (except MD and Villanova so far)...Or maybe more so on Friday than Saturday. OR maybe "who knows?" I may be accused of statistically over-fitting the data.

The early game for us is nuts, just a screw you to fans who want to attend the game. I can make it but I'm sure many who would like to go are still at work or school at that time. I can't recall ever seeing us be the early game for the NCAAs like this for a home game, not for WBB, not for WVB, not for anything. Even for TV it makes no sense. It is going to impact attendance for sure. Parking will be harder too. I don't get it. I imagine the NCAA decided it, not Stanford.

I will return and keep editing this initial post to expand the preview as I learn more, but thought we should get the thread started for our first game in the NCAAs.
Two 16 seeds play each other on Wednesday at Maples, 6pm Pacific, for the privilege of playing Stanford on Friday, 4:30. So we will have a couple of days to get ready for the winner.
Question for anyone who knows: will the tickets we are purchasing to attend the first two rounds also admit us to this play-in round on Wednesday? I will post the answer here once I know.
Sacred Heart is 18-13 overall and is getting back to the NCAAs for the first time in 11 years. They play in the Northeast conference and beat Farleigh Dickinson, which had a much better record, in their tournament. They are 258 in NET.
Southern is 18-14 overall. They play in the Southwestern Conference, and were 4th in their regular season before winning their tournament. Just like the Pac-12, neither of their league's two best teams competed to represent their league, and Southern actually beat a team with a losing record in the finals. Southern is 257 in NET, so theoretically they are perfectly matched with Sacred Heart.
These two teams are, frankly, mediocre even in their own leagues before their league tournaments vaulted them over teams with much better records. They are among the weakest teams in the tournament, and weaker than many many teams that did not make it to the tournament. Neither of them could hold a candle to the infamous Harvard team of 1998, and worries about another 1/16 upset should be quashed.
