First a politician, then an anchor, the a talk show host. What a legendary guy and career. From most reports, a pretty intelligent, decent and humorous fellow. RIP.

he was a city councilmember and mayor of Cincinnati when I was a kid, it was amazing he recovered politically after admitting to soliciting a prostitute

I was never into that type of confrontational shows and frequently confused it with the Morton Downey one.

My mother once said, "If you can't say something nice ..."
Canny commentator on the human condition, my mother. Or maybe that was Thumper's mother in Bambi. One of them.

"a decent fellow..." JS made a major contribution to the coarsening of American public culture, just to keep the money flowing into his checking account. He also tricked people into making crass fools, knaves, thugs, and jackasses out of themselves in public. What a guy!

Unfortunately, I have to agree with this statement. The only debate could be to what degree he contributed to said coarsening as opposed to what degree he merely exploited what already existed.

Far and away the most depressing aspect of all this was--and is--the insatiable thirst for swill.

Exploited. If there wasn’t the appetite the show would not have aired.
I watched him for a few minutes a couple times. That was more than enough.

Granted fertile soil must be there, but watering it the way he did can further pollute the environment. He gets no pass from me.

More than contributing, I think he was an innovator in the course of coarsening public debate. You don't get here if you're not a leader in the field:

I'll admit to being more saddened by the passing of Harry Belefonte this past week . . .
