First a politician, then an anchor, the a talk show host. What a legendary guy and career. From most reports, a pretty intelligent, decent and humorous fellow. RIP.

he was a city councilmember and mayor of Cincinnati when I was a kid, it was amazing he recovered politically after admitting to soliciting a prostitute

"a decent fellow..." JS made a major contribution to the coarsening of American public culture, just to keep the money flowing into his checking account. He also tricked people into making crass fools, knaves, thugs, and jackasses out of themselves in public. What a guy!

The only debate could be to what degree he contributed to said coarsening as opposed to what degree he merely exploited what already existed.

Granted fertile soil must be there, but watering it the way he did can further pollute the environment. He gets no pass from me.

More than contributing, I think he was an innovator in the course of coarsening public debate. You don't get here if you're not a leader in the field:
