Denied entry to Stanford Stadium -
fisbrek - 10-30-2023
I attended the Washington game this Saturday. I enjoyed the first half and then left the stadium at halftime to catch up with friends at a tailgate. I headed back to the game at the end of the third quarter. When I arrived at the stadium, the security guards told me I could not enter. I asked why and they said there is no entry after the third quarter. I was already at the ticket scanner inside the security gate. All they needed to do was scan my ticket and let me go in. But they refused, kicked me outside the security gate and then promptly locked the gate.
As I left, I saw that all the other external gates were also being locked. So this does not appear to be a rogue security guard. It seems to be Stanford policy. Given that there were 30,000 or so empty seats in the stadium, it strikes me as odd to deny entry to paying customers after the third quarter. Shouldn't Stanford be doing everything possible to encourage attendance rather than discourage it?
Does anybody know why this policy is in place? Was there an incident I don't know about? I can't figure out why Stanford would do this.

Sorry for your experience. It’s a new policy started this year in connection with beer and wine sales.

I don't understand the rationale and why it is tied to alcohol sales. Could it be for maximizing concessions? Or, do fans (students) leave to drink and come back inebriated?
UCLA: "There are no in-and-out privileges at the Rose Bowl Stadium. Once you exit the stadium you may no[sic] re-enter."
USC: "No stadium re-entry"
OSU:
2023 : "Oregon State University football fans will no longer be allowed to leave Reser Stadium at halftime and re-enter for the second half, ending a long-standing tradition at the school." "safety reasons"
WSU: "
Re-entry is allowed only at WSU Football games, as long as you do not leave before the end of the first quarter, you receive a stamp and have your ticket with you."
I didn't find a reentry policy at the other PAC-12 schools, but I could easily have missed it.
Hmm... Stanford's policy only applies to reentry. I guess first-time entry during the 2nd half is allowed.

Less than scrupulous people collecting ticket stubs inside and selling them to the hoards of fans clamoring to see the fourth quarter. . . .

I had a different issue entering the game.
As a STM, I have tickets on my phone. This week, there was no barcode on them (I had barcodes on all previous games this year). When I tried to enter, they told me I had to go to the ticket window to get physical tickets there.
The person at the window (appeared to be a student) said that Stanford just changed systems this week and that I had to do something on my phone to be able to tap my phone on the scanner (just like tapping your credit card when purchasing something).
He didn't know what I needed to do on my Android phone to get the "tap" logo on my phone, but he would print out tickets for me "this time". Implying that they won't do it in the future.
Anyone else have this issue, and do you know how to resolve it on your phone?

I had the same problem, with a hex code displayed instead of a graphic. The guy at the gate said "Yes, we have been having trouble. The scanner won't read these. Just go ahead." which I did. There is really no excuse for Stanford repeatedly messing up the ticket system. They seem to have problems, resolve them after flailing about for 1-3 weeks, and finally arrive at a "good" system that works. At that point "somebody" starts looking for a new vendor / new software / new system that they can adopt to screw it up again. Really gets old.
Initially, I didn't like the change from printed tickets to downloaded .pdf tickets, but that system was somewhat acceptable. You had to do a bit more than just pull the ticket from the booklet, but it wasn't too bad. It was IMO not an improvement in any sense of the word, but at least it worked. Then we got a system where the tickets required a "Stanford App". I really didn't like that much because it forced me to carry a cell phone. One nice thing about going to a game is that you can be free of all that, but no longer. Furthermore, you had to download the tickets one by one. Really not user-friendly. The scanners also initially didn't work well/at all. Finally got that sorted. Next, we go to Google Wallet. Don't like that because it forces me to use a 3rd party app that I may not want to use at all. Already stuck with the phone, now I am stuck with an app that gets God knows what information about me due to the privileges it requires on my phone. The silver lining was it worked transparently, downloaded all the tickets at once and brought up the appropriate ticket by date. Worked great, until they just recently broke it. Why?

Wait, I missed last week due to a family event, but I use Google Wallet on an Android, will that not work anymore?!

That's what I use. To check if you'll be able to get in, just go to your Google wallet and see if you have the "tap" logo on your tickets. Looks like this )))) with each wave getting bigger.

given the vast majority of the "ticket stubs" are on phones, and this year by "tap and go" and not bar codes I think this is a minor concern.
for those wishing to exit and re-enter you can only exit through some of the gates (e.g., gate 12 but not gate 10) you can apparently re-enter through all the gates (as we did at Gate 10 at the beginning of the third quarter)
I was also surprised they did not end "in and out privileges" with the on site sale of beer and wine as one of the big reasons people seem to go out at halftime is to enjoy adult beverages which potentially cuts into concessions revenue.

Sounds like Stanford is no longer interested in doing business with us old farts with cheap phones that don't do proximity scans. This will affect even younger people that don't feel like being mugged for a pricey phone.

Thanks for your reply. It is interesting to see that it's a policy they have publicized. Shame on me for not knowing, I guess.
I do come back to the underlying principle, though. What is the reason for prohibiting entry after the third quarter? Keep in mind, this isn't just re-entry. It's any entry at all. So for all those interested students monitoring the game on KZSU and then wanting to come cheer on the team in the fourth quarter of a close game--sorry, no dice. You cannot come in, even with a valid ticket. What purpose does this serve?
I could imagine not wanting to staff all the gates, because it costs money to pay the gate personnel. That's fine...just keep one gate open. And I can imagine not wanting to let in people who are drunk or belligerent. Fine, have a cop at the one open gate who can turn those people away. But it seems odd to have a blanket policy that nobody can get in after the third quarter.
Anyhow, I was going to write a note to the athletic department but thought I would check here first in case anybody knew the reasoning behind the policy.
Thanks!

last year you could still get paper tickets (not sure about this year), it just required some effort, one ticket holder in our group had paper tickets last year (not sure if he does or does not this year)

I bought UCLA tickets over the summer. Before the game I just printed them with the bar code, which worked fine at the gate. I also had them in my Apple Wallet just in case.

I'm glad this strange new re-entry policy didn't exist in 2001. My son (then 11 years old) and I watched the Notre Dame home game on tv. It was a late kickoff on Thanksgiving weekend, I believe, and it was quite rainy and windy that day.
LSJU defense did well in the 3rd quarter and when the rain subsided, we decided to head over to the stadium and were allowed in, for free, for the 4th quarter! I just looked it up to confirm - LSJU scored 2 TDs in the 4th quarter and won 17-13! It was then on to the Seattle Bowl.
From GoStanford.com:
"Kenneth Tolon scored on a 1-yard pitch with 1:08 to play as No. 13 Stanford's slumbering offense woke up just in time for a rain-soaked 17-13 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday night.
Driving winds, intermittent rain and two hyped-up defenses created miserable conditions for both offenses. Stanford's Randy Fasani and Notre Dame's Holiday and Matt LoVecchio all had games they would rather forget - but Fasani got the ball to his running backs late in the contest, who carried the Cardinal to victory.
Holiday threw a first-quarter touchdown pass but finished the night 1-for-16 for Notre Dame, which wasted an outstanding defensive game with an equal amount of offensive ineptitude. As Holiday's miserable night wore on, he saw the Irish's bowl hopes disappear with his completion percentage.
"It's just one of those things you dream about, but you hope it doesn't ever happen," said Holiday, speaking of his performance but also describing Notre Dame's season. "It's not anybody's fault. We just didn't get any plays that we needed to get."
Casey Moore also scored on a late run as the Cardinal (8-2), ranked fifth in the nation in scoring and ninth in total offense, plodded unsuccessfully through the first 3 quarters under Fasani, whose return after a month out with injuries was fairly dismal.
"Our offensive line started dominating in the fourth quarter," Fasani said. "Those last couple of drives, it was great to hand the ball off."
Stanford put together two impressive scoring drives in the fourth quarter to end the bowl chances of Notre Dame (4-6), which fell to 1-9 in night games under coach Bob Davie.
Tank Williams intercepted LoVecchio's pass with 54 seconds left to seal the victory. Notre Dame completed two passes all night."

I don't go to games anymore. But this sounds like Stanford being Stanford. As far as cultivating fans, it sounds like Stanford may be borrowing from the wealth of knowledge found in the
John Fisher Guide to Sports Fan Relations. Fisher has a Stanford MBA. So he thinks he knows almost everything about almost everything.

As I live in a state bereft of professional football and baseball teams (Oregon), I am curious how this Stanford ticket experience compares to the 49ers, Giants, and Warriors. Sounds like there is room for improvement all around in making the ticketing and game experience more fan-friendly.

Just a WAG but barring a breathalyzer test, I think it's easier for the gatekeepers to have a blanket policy than one that requires some subjective judgment, ie who's drunk/belligerent and who's not. There might be some legal ramifications as well.

It must be "NFC" (near field communication) that you have to turn on on your phone for tickets to work now.
Stanford's scanners have had the ability to work with either NFC or bar codes / QR codes for several years. I can't imagine why they want to start forcing NFC in the middle of a season.
I'm fairly sure it's possible to have a phone that still works fine but is too old to have NFC capability.

I have asked them exactly that question in an email exchange with athleticstickets@stanford.edu. I will post the answer I get, if I get one. So far, they have been defending the idea that they informed us all that QR codes were going away this year. How we all got in to the previous games remains a mystery under that scenario :-). Lets see what they say.
