MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - bl82 - 11-06-2023

CSUN was a 7-25 team last year and lost some of their best players to the transfer portal. They have a new coach, Andy Newman, who promises to bring a up-tempo approach. Most of the key players are tranfers (there are only four returnees) and there is not a lot of size, so what we see will be anybody's guess. Stanford is a 22 point favorite.

TV is Pac-12 Bay Area

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - old spanish trail - 11-06-2023

Cal had impressive crowd this eve for Madsen opening. Cal won by 2 or 4. Stanford crowd not so much.

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - BobK - 11-06-2023

CSUN far more aggressive. Stanford down
21-15.

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - SkiBum80 - 11-06-2023

This is just reinforcing my impression of Coach Haase, which is not a good one.
That is that our guys often, like tonight, do not seem mentally prepared to burst outta the starting gate. They often seem more lethargic and kind of confused compared to our competitor. This has gone on for years over many a player roster turnover. The common denominator is Coach.

Our guys been heaving up long bombs from outside the arc like they think they are all Steph Curry shooters. Memo to Coach: they’re not

At the half
Spencer Jones & Stojakovic together are 1-11 in shooting.
Ouch

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - PVTree - 11-06-2023

We look like we're playing our first game of the season. We don't play much defense, at least not tonight.

I like Bynum. He seems like a true point guard after years of combo guards who lack quickness for the position.

Carlyle in street clothes. Hopefully he's not hurt. Gealer our backup point guard tonight. Big drop off. Keefe hasn't gotten in the game yet.

We started to take control of the game at the end. CSUN with players in foul trouble. It does appear that we should create separation from them in the second half.

I don't think there is 1000 fans in the stands.

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - Spiny_Norman - 11-06-2023

CSUN able to penetrate and get just about anything they want in the paint. Lots of layups. Attack the basket is working for them. 30 of their 38 points in the paint.

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - PVTree - 11-06-2023

I miscalculated, still a close game  at the under 12 time out. Adam Keefe and Monty in the house!

Raynaud with a double double.

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - SkiBum80 - 11-06-2023

This game is far from over
Reynaud & Angel good
Bynum & MJones ok
SJones & Stojakovic not good

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - PVTree - 11-06-2023

Raynaud made a bucket to cut the CSUN lead to 2 and will shoot a FT after the time out. This is a terrible start to the season. We need to at least get the win.

******
Michael Jones took over the last two minutes. Stanford ahead 84-79 with 25 seconds to go and the ball.

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - magnus - 11-06-2023

Phew, 88-79

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - SkiBum80 - 11-06-2023

After a typical Haasian slow & lethargic start
Our guys finish the last 3:00 like they shoulda played the previous 37:00
And snatch victory from the jaws of defeat

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - Sam Leopold - 11-06-2023

This got into a bit of nerve-wracking jeopardy but a good strong finish to get the win.

Hope that whatever held Carlyle back on the sideline isn't too serious.  It would be kind of nice to have him for Atlantis.

Can't imagine any Pac team having fewer fans for their home opener. Even if Stanford had beat the spread, that would have been my takeaway.

We've seen football at least have some fun moments despite the woeful lack of fan support, hopefully this men's hoops team will create some wonderful memories for themselves.

Someday Muir will finally reach the long overdue conclusion that it's time to clear Haase (or someone will do it for him). And maybe then I'll prepare to invest and risk getting my heart broken. But it's been almost a decade since we last danced, and two decades since we danced regularly, and at this point, it has been so long since Stanford MBB had a pulse that I long ago lost interest.

I still have interest... but whether I have a life may be debatable

A couple of points, this years CSUN team is NOT last years team.  They completely rebuilt their team through the portal.  The pregame odds don't seem to have taken that into account.  For many teams, comparing last years to this years will be a fools errand due to the portal.  Without Bynum and Gealer we would have lost this game.  Bynum and Gealer had NO turnovers, team had only ten and 5 of those came from Raynaud. After Andrej got hammered a time or two when he took it to the rack, he seemed to lose some of his aggression.  As the coach pointed out he needs to get a bit bigger and stronger.  He was an 18/19 year old going in against 22/23 year olds.  I don't have any problem with all the 3's we took, there are always a few bad games, our guys are all pretty close to historic 40 percent from that range, so fire away as far as I am concerned.  Continue to have almost twice the assists to turn overs and we will win a lot of games we would have lost last year, and this was one of those. When was the last time our point guards had NO turnovers?  If this game's Raynaud is the one we get all year, things will look up a bunch.
As far as crowds go, immediate past performance certainly makes a difference, but also impacting this is what I consider the totally incompetent marketing of our sports. Get people in the stands, give the tickets away cheap, make an effort to sell the product and them make it easy to see it. Jack up the ticket prices where there is a demand.

Good points
Was dicey for much of game til the end.
4 of 5 starters good but Spencer Jones terrible ... how much due to an off night and how much due to arm/hand injury?
Stojakovic really looked bad, flying around out of control.
He needs more than weight and muscle, needs rethink what he's trying to do and when.
I think he has the necessary talent but it wasn't directed in any good way last night.
I haven't listened to Coach Haase postgame presser spin yet, might need line up a shot of "fortitude" ahead of time.

As expected, once again Haase's team debuts a season by playing grossly MEDIOCRE ball against a marshmallow opponent. WHY IS IT THAT NO HAASE TEAM EVER SURPRISES US WITH HOW WELL PREPARED, DISCIPLINED, DRILLED, AND EXPLOSIVE IT IS at the beginning of the season? Does Haase consider making such a showing early in bad taste? He seems to accept slow starts as a given. This is nauseating year after year. I expect us to finish slightly above .500 this year, but only because we schedule a bunch of stiffs and pushovers in the preseason (many of whom will give us trouble). We are long past the point of needing a new coach to breathe life and excitement into this program, one that in spite of some recruiting success continues to spin its wheels and that cannot remember the last time it's been to the Dance.

RE: MBB Season opener vs. CSUN tonight at 8 PM - bl82 - 11-07-2023

Switching subjects a bit, am I the only one that is frustrated that from a strategic perspective, we rarely seem to attack opponents with foul trouble. We get CSUN into quick foul trouble in the first half and what do we do? We make sure that half our shots are three pointers.

In the second half we have a bunch of CSUN players in deep foul trouble and we should have been driving and cutting hard to the hoop on every play, but we didn't seem to attack. This is in spite of the fact that both Raynaud and Angel are both excellent at taking their man down low and when healthy, Spencer has an increasingly effective inside game. I'd like to see more drive and dish from Byrum as well. Heck, even Stojokavic showed a strong interest in attacking the basket.

It eventually worked out, but we could have had a bunch of CSUN players with 4-5 fouls much earlier in the game.

Agree. Not much pressure in the paint on their guys in foul trouble.
Although finally got one to foul out late in game.
I finally listened to Coach Haase post game presser and he said "We're gonna shoot (meaning, jack up!?) a lot of threes".
I think this is a mistake.  We are not as great a 3 point shooting team as he thinks.
We were 31% last night.
Our star downtown shooter S.Jones was O fer.
New guy Stojakovic was 1-6.
Anyway, just running down the court and jacking up a quick 3 will result in a successive series of losses.
Coach did say the team shoots 3's better if the ball sees the paint first, and this needs to be the unrelenting strategy.
Especially vs a team like CSUN where we have size advantage.
Try to work the ball inside.
Let the 3's be kick outs to our open guys if/when their D sags into the paint to help out.
